Many people's Envys that are built with the i5-430M are getting delayed due to massive inventory shortages from Intel's production line and stock for OEMs. This is expected. However, many other forum users here tried to negotiate with HP Sales Support first and got $50 dollar cash backs or $25 dollar HP Gift Cards or both.

but people are getting 10% back due to delays now???
-
Thanks SS for the info.
I was aware of the $50 cash backs being given out by the cust execs but never called them (was busy else where and thought i still had enough time before i can complain
) .
My order was $974 before tax. With this i can expect a discount of $97 .
I guess this mail is HPs way of evening out the favors for people who haven't complained yet or am i being naive. -
Star Forge Quaggan's Creed Redux!
It's expected they give you some sort of discount, but I don't know how much exactly how much. -
Well when the initial gen 2 shipments got delayed due to a 'parts shortage' they actually sent out a email before the original ship date was missed and automatically included a $50 store coupon...... Sounds like your getting a better deal with 10% off (I would have saved $160 with that)
-
How is that N97 working out for you ?
-
after i reassembled the Envy i forgot to re-attach the sticky pads on the bottom corners. the next day i went the desk where i had worked on it and there were only 3 pads. i took a flashlight and looked all around but there is still 1 missing. do they evaporate if left unattended or what?? UGH.
anyone know where i can get a spare sticky pad? -
Don't know if this has been asked before, but do any of you know what kind of, if any, performance hit you take by using DDR3-1066 memory instead of DDR3-1333? My Envy came with DDR3-1066 even though it's an i7-720. Do the higher CAS latencies eat up the performance increase gained by running at a slightly higher frequency?
Edit: oh, forgot to mention that CPU-Z says that it's running single channel. I remember somebody else mentioning this. Wierd. -
My only issue is a broken key as well. I really don't feel like having to send my laptop in for a piece that should take me 30 seconds to replace by myself, but the problem is there's nowhere to buy key retainers/hinges online. The HP Parts store only sells keyboard enclosures and full keys.
Let me know if you find a solution. -
You will see differences in benchmarks, but almost nothing in real-world use with single vs. dual-channel, and there will be pretty much no noticeable differences between 1066 and 1333
-
I ordered mine on 3/31. Got a $50 credit for the first shipping delay by calling them (went from 4/12 to 4/21). Then, after they missed the second estimated ship date I got a personal email from the "CTO Escalation Manager" saying it is delayed again till the 28th and offered me a 10% discount so I wouldn't cancel.
A few others have said they got the 10% discount as well.
Here's to hoping it will ship by the 28th *fingers crossed* -

Who here is still complaining about their ENVY reaching 80f under stress? -
lol, i know. be thankful for dual copper fans
-
anyone complaining more than once about the lack of an optical drive should be shown that link.
-
If you have the slice battery you can steal one of the grey pads from the top side. I'm sure you would never miss one of those. I have actually been thinking about replacing all four of the black pads from the envy with the grey pads from the slice battery.
-
those of you getting another 10% off are making out like bandits.. but the wait is terrible. kinda glad i picked the i5-520 so i got my toy to play with now.
-
I don't think they'll be meeting their new estimate (4/28) once again. I wonder what they'll be giving us then... (if anything.. they can only give us so much, right?).
-
A friend who re-ordered new specs (basically Matte screen instead of Glossy) and called in for the change on 4/14 was told his would ship out 5/3.
Really seems like that lack of i5 chips is hurting right now, and if his is 5/3 it may not be a huge surprise if more get delayed that additional week from 4/28. Sucks =/ -
Star Forge Quaggan's Creed Redux!
The delay is only affecting orders with the i5-430M, not the i5-5xxM Series. I am too waiting on a replacement with a i5-540M on 5/3, but my CM says it is highly possible it is getting shipped out later this week.
You also have to note that the majority of Arrandales produced are the OEM 430M Series and the majority of them HP sold recently were also 430M's. -
Eagerly awaiting for the 28th. If it gets delayed again, I'll just probably cancel it.
-
Seems like it would be cheaper for HP to upgrade late orders to the i5-520, get them built and shipped now.
-
Key retainer clips can't be bought, per HP, so a 1mm broken arm of a hinge on my period key is going to require it to be sent in to replace the entire keyboard, even though I have Home Service. The keyboard costs $76 on HP Parts if I wanted to do it myself.
Love the laptop but I'm seriously regretting the home service warranty decision if I have to send it in for anything that would actually cause me to call for service.

Changing the state of anything in your computer is a risk vs. reward proposition, regardless of what it is you're changing. BIOS flashes are inherently risky with ANY computer, as if anything goes wrong, you will effectively be left with a completely non-functioning computer. I can say that I flashed the BIOS without any problems whatsoever. And I'm sure that many people have done so on their Envy 15's without problems.
I've performed BIOS flashes on several other computers (18 computers, at least one flash per computer since about 1991) and have only had 1 of them "brick". Am I lucky? I suppose. There's nothing special I was doing to flash them, however.
That having been said, updating BIOS is one of those things that you really only should do if something is not working, and the BIOS that you're flashing to solves that specific issue. That's mostly because of the catastrophic (well, completely non-functioning computer) failure chance. It's standard risk mitigation.
I have also had interesting issues with Hibernation - I am treated eventually to a dark black screen. The machine is "responsive" as I can hit caps lock, etc. In fact, the way that I've managed to "fix" the problem is to just close the lid (makes it go to sleep) then reopen the lid. Comes back to the log in page 100% of the time (or at least, has for me). I can't remember if I flashed the BIOS after I was having those issues). -
I really wish they would. If mine doesn't ship by tomorrow I'll definitely be calling to see if they can (even though I know they won't even tell you what part is holding up production)
-
I never had any black screens on my ENVY like random black screens while working. Never. The ONLY problem with back screen I have is when I close the lid, sometimes the computer doesn't sleep so if I reopen the lid again im hit with a black screen. Other times when I close the lid it sleeps ok and awakes no problems. That is the only time I get black screen. Not sure if that's what everybody is talking about or its a simple driver issue conflicting with windows sleep function.
BIOS is F18. -
I think my BIOS is F.24...
I meant to say that coming out of hibernate works "fine" except for the last step (when I'd normally re-enter my password). When I touch the power button to get the machine out of hibernate, I am treated to the usual startup sequence, eventually getting to the "Windows is resuming your session" screen with the swirly windows logo, and then, all I get is a dark black screen - the backlight is off. That's the only time I've ever gotten a black screen.
I think that other people are talking about a separate issue that may be tied to an "overheating" or at least unstable GFX card - it would seem that the screen would just go dark at various random points while using the laptop, be it while playing a game, writing a document, surfing the intertubes, etc. -
If it is one of the plastic 'c' shaped retainers clips (molded) on the bottom of the actual keycap that broke (the part that clips over the tubular bar that stays on the keyboard side). I was able to repair one on my last envy by very carefully applying a small dab of quick drying adhesive over the broken 'c' clip area and carefully snaping the keycap back in place, then I placed a paperback book over the keyboard to add some pressure to the key and let it dry completely.... It worked fine for the 2 weeks until I returned the machine for an i5 model.
The Glue I used was called 'Quick Grip' by Beacon Adhesives beaconcreates.com I'm sure any similar type would also work... -
Is a i5 540M the same socket as an i7 720QM?
Could I swap an i5 into my i7 mobo for lower power consumption but keep my 4 DIMM slots and USB 3.0? -
that is exactly the same problem I'm having, so I guess there's really no point in upgrading the BIOS for me...this is rather annoying.
also, sometimes it fails to go into hybernation in the first place...I press the power button (set to hybernate), close the lid (set to do nothing) and put it away...and when I turn the lights off and go to bed I hear the faint wiff of the fans coming from my desk.

Star Forge Quaggan's Creed Redux!
Unfortunately not, the BIOS written specifically locks-out the USB 3.0 Controller and 2 DIMM Slots from being activated in the presence of an Arrandale Dual Core being used on the motherboard. So by swapping to an i5, you will lose two USB Ports and two DIMM Slots from working on your motherboard, leaving only two other DIMM slots activated and your USB 2.0/eSATA port active. -
why would they do that? bad HP, BAD!!
or hey, what about using the dual core i7, maybe that would work? -
Star Forge Quaggan's Creed Redux!
The i7-620M is still an Arrandale, so no. You must have a i7 QUAD to keep the features. -
Why would they do that?
-
this enclosure works well with the Envy. i installed a 500gb drive, no problems. its powered by the built-in USB cable and speeds are good at 25-30mb/sec over USB. when using the eSATA port, the enclosure can be powered by the same built-in USB cable and the speed is over 100mb/sec during large file transfers. tested while the Envy was on battery power. an eSATA cable is included plus 2 other USB cables, one of them goes into a power jack on the enclosure for extra power (not needed with the Envy) and the other is an extender for the built-in USB cable. the body is extruded aluminum, the ends are plastic, and the built-in USB cord is cloth covered and tucks into the chassis. pretty good for $20.
-
I assume you meant MB/sec not Mb/sec ?
-
i think you can assume that anytime someone is talking about hard drive transfer speeds they are using megabyte as the unit. at least for the foreseeable future. only time i ever hear megabit being used is for ISP/cell carrier data speeds or for telecom facility rate. obviously i don't capitalize consistently so hopefully context is helpful.

Hi all, placed an order for the hp envy and i hope i wont be disappointed. Can't wait for it to get here and put it through its paces. Most likely going to reapply the thermal paste with artic silver 5. Anyone have any suggestions as to what else i can do to get the most out of the envy?
-
Star Forge Quaggan's Creed Redux!
Beats me to be honest, but I assure you some forum members have tried this tactic out and yielded these results. You can search into the earlier posts in this thread regarding this and many found out that the USB 3.0 and half the DIMM slots aren't recognized with an i5 put into the i7 Motherboard. -
Not true. I had my first 540m order delayed. Ordered on 4/8, original estimate 4/19, revised ship date 4/28. Cancelled & reordered with Bing Cashback to save an additional $60. If this order gets delayed, I wouldn't exactly be heartbroken--another $25 coupon would be nice.
-
Hey second-gen Envy owners, has your battery life improved at all with the new hardware options?
Want to say I read a few posts in this thread saying that people were still struggling to get 2.5+ hours without the slice battery, but I figured I'd check. -
Star Forge Quaggan's Creed Redux!
Well in most cases I have seen on the forums are people getting delayed for the 430M, well at least they are the ones complaining at least. -
my 430m envy just shipped. I remember reading and seeing another website some of you used to track your shipments with that show a little more info but can't seem to remember/find it. Anyone know what website I might be referring to?
-
This one: UPS Tracking - FedEx Tracking - USPS Tracking - DHL Tracking
Huh, that's pretty cool, I copied the url which is 'simpletracking.com' and when I pasted it in the typing area that's what it said, then when I posted it, it changed to what you see above, don't know how they can get it to change like that but good for marketing... -
Thanks JJB
-
The forum software (the vBSEO plugin actually) did that.
And also, I got my shipping notice too! Woo! Except still have to wait another 5-7 days for it to get here
-
not really, megabit is used to truthfully inflate numbers for marketing purposes, like in rating the speed of USB3.0, Firewire, PCIe, SATA, etc.
-
@exi: That's correct, you won't usually see much north of 2.5 hours without the slice on an i5 (and you won't see 2.5 with an i7).
Seems like most people either grab a second 6-cell or the slice. -
I'm going to try this today otherwise it's being sent in for service.
I also went through the service guide just in case I wanted to replace the keyboard myself but apparently you also need to buy the keyboard hardware kit, which contains the mylar backing for the keyboard itself, for another $46. Why they wouldn't include the 30cent backing strip with the keyboard is hilariously transparent in wanting to milk more money.
On the plus side, I did flash to the F.24 BIOS without issue. I was on F1A. -
@ozu
Just be careful not to use to much glue so that it would interfere with the 'travel' of the key when pushed, and don't put to much weight on the key while it dries or it may glue the key down to the 'actuator', that is why I used a paperback book to apply even, but light, downword pressure while drying. Good luck. -
