My display sometimes dims down a bit several times on its own, even when plugged in. Is that normal? should it stay at max when it is plugged in?

For Win7? Yes. It's a dimming feature. You can turn if off or set the amount to dim to. In tray, right click on the battery icon. Choose power options. Then change plan settings on your current plan. Then change advanced power settings. Then scroll down to display and expand the tree. You will find what you are looking for there. :)
