Serg feel free to use anything I post for your summary pages.

Unless there are other better tools I'd also make a list of software people may find useful (HD monitor seems quite useful early on to monitor temperatures).

Hdmonitor Light use (forums and downloading benchmark software). Installed sisoft sandra during this period.

can someone confirm whether model no 15-1060ea is e2e or not. Cannot find any info about this, and looks like this is the only model available in uk and ireland
    cheers

Those are pretty typical on my machine. I have the P9500 chip (25W) and ATI Fire GL 5700. My older Thinkpad T61 would easily run 20C higher. The cooling system is very good though and rarely runs warm. When I tried the Envy 15 display model at Best Buy I noticed the palm rest heat right off the bat.

I guess the moral of this story isn't just the temps but the ability for the system to cool itself and shuffle the heat out so the user doesn't experience it.

How much of that transfer to the palm rests and bottom?

Bottom on thinkpads metal or plastic?

Hi there and welcome to the NBR Forums!
Especially to this little Owners Lounge.

About your question, it is confirmed, no E2E on the Envy 15.

Thanks, but I hope these are not idle temps. BTW, does GPU-Z show anything in the sensors tab?

I really appreciate your guys' answers. I will try it out and return it tomorrow. I have followed the thread along with the other one from the beginning. Now, even without the BCB problem, I will have to return it due to the one HDD bay and heat issue.

BTW, bdms08, thank you for your info. about the non-refundable shipping. Since I use free shipping at the beginning, I guess I will get full refund.

Sensor tab did not work, but the HWmonitor seems to pick up the GPU temps (sensor TZ01?) Or is that the overall i7 temperature?

Um, the reading may not be right as you most of the fields are empty. Also, it says "memory size" 0MB. May be it means there is no GDDR3 installed

There is no HDMI to VGA adapter in the box. And currently from just starting it up to using it for less than 30 minutes just trying to download firefox and such it's gotten fairly warm. Definitely not as hot as the dell xps 1530, but fairly warm just sitting here idle. Could be the san diego weather, but it warmed up pretty fast.

I'll go download everything for you serg and run the tests for the final numbers.

Subjectively it feels quite light, lighter than the dell 1530 for sure and quite a bit more sturdy. The angle in limited for the screen for how far you can push it back, but should be enough for me as long as I use it on a desk.

Also does someone know how to adjust the trackpad settings, is it just the usual hardware device manager way or is there a special program for it?

For the record I do think the Vaio Z series would be better for business travelers. Primarily do to the ports and especially the express card slot for further customization.

I was just throwing out areas where someone might prefer the envy 13, even with the tradeoffs.

I do NOT think having the absolute fastest cpu is everything to everybody. What is the point of having low voltage cpus in the first place? Lower power consumption while still providing reasonably fast performance.

If what you need to do on a mobile device does not involve heavier number crunching workloads, a low voltage cpu gives you enough performance and superior battery life if you hold the battery capacity constant.

Why would anyone with the means ever choose a prius over a ferrari?

Because if someone intends to travel surface streets primarily and values efficiency over raw speed, which will virtually never be used in city traffic and at the same time burn through fuel at a much faster clip, the prius might be the preferred choice.

On having to carry the battery slice I get the issue with extra weight, but the form factor seems fairly streamlined to me being a flat blade battery. If given the choice of a battery that sticks out the back of the notebook but weighs an extra .3 pounds vs a more streamlined slice battery that weighs 1 lb, I could see some preferring the blade battery.

If a single pound will make or break the entire machine then it is probably too heavy for the user in the first place. To me weight gets to diminishing returns below a certain threshold. For some, a 5 lb machine with the battery is something they would be fine with and have the endurance and strength to carry without bothering them. For others it might be a major issue. I once ran into someone who thought even the 4 pounds total was too heavy. Now that kind of fragility and sensitivity to weight is completely alien to me, I remember carrying about 5 HEAVY books in my book bag as a young child daily from school to my home and seemed to be able to manage. To me carrying anything below 5.5 pounds is like carrying air, but there it is.

Again, would I choose the envy 13? Hell no. I'd take the 15 in a heartbeat, I would GLADLY bear that extra weight for all that extra power, but I can still see things on the envy 13 I would miss, mainly the screen type.

I saw same strange effects too on the i7 on the G51J with the readings.

NOTE: THESE ARE NEW COMPONENTS overall, so dont expect all tools to be able to read them well. That is what I posted some time ago, that Kevin and I did some tests on the i7 720QM and it was messy, since not many things could read properly the i7.

About the GPU, it is new stuff too, so I am hopping it is that what causes it, and it is not a HUGE IGP! $%^&

Yes, we should probably wait for the vendors to update their tools before trusting the readings.

BTW, my E1705 runs hot due to the GPU but the CPU temps are always nice especially when idle.

    Peppe1,

As the temps went from 50 to 70's can you tell a difference in fan speed? Does it seem like the fan speed is on full throttle at 70+ temp or could they go higher?

Default power profile is 'HP recommended' Min CPU power 5% max CPU is 100%. Let it idle for a good 15 minutes and still 2 cores low of ~45 C and 2 low of 48.

    Going to test HDMI now.

    Try HDTune for the HDD.
And PCMark 05 and 06, that should give us comparable values with other laptops out there.
    3D Mark Vantage too.

I can hear maybe 3 fan speeds.

The only BIOS setting for the fan is 'always on' default is enabled and i left it enabled.

The lowest speed is very hard to hear. Have to move close to it to pick it up.

Middle speed that it runs at now that i have done some benchmarks and been on most of the day. CPU is reporting around ~48C.

During the benchmarks loud fan speed kicked on. I may have heard 2 gears here, but I can't be sure. Could have just been one side kicking on before the other or something. If it didn't go to max speed at 75C i don't know when it would :p

You can attach them to the post, or use another site like imageshack. Once the file is uploaded to imageshack (or flickr, etc), go to this forum with the link copied to clipboard, then when creating your post there is an icon that looks like two mountains against a yellow background. Click this, then paste the links to the images in.

For more information on attaching images using the NBR attach function, look at this thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=137713#post2118326

If the images are large, please try to thumbnail them so it doesn't ruin the forum for people with low resolution displays ;)

Use photobucket for it, it is what most people use.
The only other way is attaching them on the post using the tools that are underneath, called manage attachments but there is a limit to 5 AFAIK.

The SXPS16 from Dell is E2E.

hey guys I put up some of the initial tests I've run. I'm downloading vantage and pcmark right now and I'll put my scores up once they've run. Anything else you want me to run?

I'll also try and snap some quick pictures of the envy compared to the dell 1530. The power brick on the envy is definitely bigger, but overall the envy is actually only a bit wider from what I can tell and definitely overall thinner.

Serg feel free to use any of these images, I can pm them to you too.

HDMI stuck to stereo out playing a dvd.

Software that launched to play the DVD (HP media something) did not have option to change off of analog audio. Started a movie at 89% power. Going to let it run for a while and see where its at.

DVD playback is fine with HP's external DVD player.

Where did you hear that HP was going to sell deual HDD/SDD? It would be great news to hear that some promises will be fulfilled. That also leaves hopes for us poor European s that someone at HP USA think have impaired vision (maybee a 1080p screen on its way over the atlantic).

It's 10122 for the CPU and 3463 for the GPU

The score I gave was the overall number.
