have you tried installing the Synaptics gesture application?

    Download - Scrybe

You can use it to customize gestures and multi-touch taps pretty extensively. Just make sure you do a custom install to uncheck the box marked "Yahoo toolbar"! also yahoo is the default search with the question mark gesture. I have changed it to google in the settings.

ENVY 14 and 17 is going to come shortly, confirmed:

HP Envy 17 and HP Envy 14 Video Previewed

looks like they made a lot of improvement, both 14 and 17 are edge-to-edge, and both of them have built-in cd-rom and backlit keyboard, the extra function key on the left most column of envy 15 is gone... And seems they made an improvement on the touchpad, by separating the button from the pad.
I hope they improved build quality too. That is what really matters.
Although I returned two envy 15's, but I will give another try on envy 17.

will the envy 15's recieve the backlit keyboard and e2e? The Envy-15 is the perfect size for me, not too big and not too small. Not too sure if the envy-14 would be my thing, don't really care about the internal drive to be honest.

For me the E14 looks good - at least if it's available with a quadcore cpu which is why I went with the E15 in the first place. Of course it will still get a bit warm, but I see no way around that.

But I've made my investment for now, no more laptops until 2011.

Thinking about getting an Envy and was just wondering how the case feels when using it in your lap? Does it get too hot or feel like there's electricity coming from it. I only ask this because I had a Macbook Pro 13 inch and took it back because of the discomfort of using it on the couch. Wondering if this computer does that to anyone?

Hehe, I used to have a previous generation MBP and it is something you never want to use while wearing shorts. The aluminum got scalding hot at times. The Envy 15 runs just as hot, I must either use the Zalman NC-1000 laptop cooler or, when sitting on the couch the slice battery works great as a sort of insulation.

LMAO! maybe if you get the accidental damage protection Total Care plan with 5 year coverage and wait several years until the Envy 15 is discontinued before you drop it ;-)

There's always the possibility of grounding problems, but it's most often a power supply or wall wiring problem.

I was just on Malta two weeks ago (240V, UK plugs), stayed in an old building and I did feel live current coming from the corners of my Envy under my wrists. Likely bad wall wiring, as I never get this problem in Sweden.

One problem with keeping my Envy 15 on my lap is that unless I keep my knees tightly together, my legs will block the fan intakes on the underside.

Does anyone game in here? Ive been having a problem with any mouse being plugged into my Envy while playing TF2 or CODMW2. What happens is if i hold down the left mouse button too long to fire it will continue to fire untill i hit right button then the left button a couple times. Does anyone know if there is a sticky key setting or something that is causing this?

To me the Envy is uncomfortable on my lap. It does make my testies glow in the dark tho...lol. I also have a Sony Vaio Y series that is an awesome lap machine. I think the Sony Y or the Asus UL80 UL80Vt-A1 are great lap machines. Cool quiet with the CLUV cpus and a battery life that is unbelievable.

I have a previous gen MBP 17 and recently returned an Envy 15 i7 w dual SSDs. For what I do (software development and massive time series database work) I found that the Envy ran slightly cooler in my lap. I had to get a lap-pad for the MBP due to the glowing testies problem.

So I reinstalled Win7 and loaded up all the drivers which dramatically cooled the envy down (fan always on;22/27C on cpu; 41C on gpu on idle). But I still can't get rid of this high pitched noise. I read there it might be a coil or something from the other thread and I was wondering if there is a guide to fixing it.

No I didn't. I ran into other users reporting there wasn't any noticeable performance gain with the new intel firmware. It's just a lot work for "nothing". And the envy 4k reads would still suck.

As an Envy owner and HP lover, I am so excited for the new line of Envy to get great reviews. I think they really listened to the customers and produced something that will be the best laptop on the market. Everything I thought was lacking in my machine is now fixed with the new line up. The plastic bezel, quick launch keys, plastic hinge, back light keyboard, and yes sometimes I wish I had a optical drive.

Thanks for letting me know. I never really knew what the difference of the firmwares is, but my friend here at work was asking. I thought maybe the new firmware would help reduce the slowdown of the raided system or something.

i swear, ran into this same problem on a 2nd gen hp envy, and taking out the power cord took out this really annoying high pitched whine that i kept hearing. noticed it cuz i was trying to take a nap but couldnt because of the whine and the laptop on. took out the power adapter and it immediately became quieter. not sure if thats the case or not though for you.

As for now the Envy 15 doesn't seem to be getting a refresh. The 14/17 inch models are getting the "Infinity" display, edge to edge glass. I still don't understand why HP is still only offering the "Radiance" display on the smaller laptops(13 currently and 14 when it comes out). Plus I wonder if the Radiance display differs from the Dream Color display on the Elite book.

anyone get bsod relating to the ati driver? I do every so often and it's very strange as it never happens during my work flow (illustrator, many tabs in chrome, and npr on wmp) or when gaming (steam lfd2). It only seems to happen when play a video (flash or dvd) and not all the time just once every blue moon (hard to say really once a week or less).

My wife got 2 BSOD's since receiving her Envy. after running WhoCrashed analysis of the minidump files, the error was the CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT which if I understand correctly has something to do with the cores running out of sync.

This was likely caused by the following module: ntoskrnl.exe

I recommend reinstalling the drivers after uninstalling the existing drivers through control panel then using driver sweeper:

    Guru3D - Driver Sweeper

    Things will be more stable.

Should work. There is nothing different on a Gen 1 Motherboard then from a Gen 2 sans the GPU, but HP is still supporting it in the F.1X BIOS, released in favor of the Gen 2's. The support is diminished when facing with ATI Catalyst Drivers though.

No offense, but you should maybe not post things like that unless your sure about your info, especially with all the people bricking their envy's recently. There is an NEC USB 3.0 controller on the gen 2 i7 mobo along with the 2 3.0 ports, this probably wouldn't make a difference, but if you don't know for sure please don't post it.

Yes, I installed BIOS F26 on my 1st generation Envy 15. I have been installing every BIOS version since I bought it in November, hoping any of them would allow me to install an updated Catalyst driver, either on Windows or Linux.

I bought the computer to do OpenCL development, and I haven't been able to start yet. Hopefully at some point HP or ATI will remember us (buyers of the 1st generation Envy) and fix the bug in the generic driver that prevents us from installing it. I get crashes at boot time, both on Linux and Windows 7.

Official HP drivers (10.2) are not OpenCL compatible. And on Linux, only Catalyst drivers support OpenCL, and they crash at boot time on 1st generation Envys.

If refreshing a laptop configuration after only a few weeks from original release wasn't bad enough, they are forgetting those of us unlucky enough to spend our money on the first revision of the laptop, leaving us stuck and without bug fixes.

I think this is my last HP/ATI purchase. Luckily for them, it was a pretty expensive one.

FWIW, I read a post yesterday that the 10.4 package worked for someone with the 4830, I forget which thread though, either the envy; gen 2 , benchmarks or the drivers thread. Not sure about open CL.

As you are aware, people with Gen 1's successfully upgraded from F.0X BIOS to F.1X BIOS in the past as the F.1X was released in part of the Gen 2's. I also hope they continue to support the Envy's BIOS with the possible 3rd Gen for all the previous Generations.

I think someone modded the 1.04's to work with the 4830's but not sure if it supports OpenCL (I think it does to be honest with you.)
