Hey Guys, I found that my core is still going strong at 620mhz, Memory crashes at 1050mhz and artifacts at 1040mhz. I just played dawn of war 2 Chaos rising for about an hour at 620/1030 and it seems stable so far
Soooo happy, my 3dmark06 score jumped from around 7900 to 9400
Temps max out at around 72c for the GPU and CPU is at high 70s. -
Adding to my last post. 620mhz on the core seems pretty good! but from what I understand the 4830 is more memory bandwidth limited, and it's sad that I don't think I can push it beyond 1030mhz. Is anyone else getting similar results?
-
Your idle temps seem quite high, IIRC the 720Q idled around 50C and my 5830 (on i5 machine) idle at 39C. Also if your getting higher summer ambient temps that could definately be a factor...
Regarding your speakers question on the other thread; should be no problem long term as long as you don't turn it up loud enough to hear significant distortion. Also you can turn down the last 2 sliders in the IDT (beats) EQ to below the '0' level, the speakers cannot reproduce any sound at these frequencies and it just robs power from the amplifier... -

It is normal for distortion to occur when you crank up the volume to 100% on a 'loud' recording source but you need it like that to be able to hear a low volume source. Solution is to not turn the volume up so high that you hear distortion
Most amps and preamps are fairly clean up to ~85% volume levels so make sure you are not maxing the volume of the 'player' (itunes, WMP etc) to 100% or you will just be amplifying the distortion when you turn up the main volume. -
@jjb i recently disabled powerplay ......................will a clean install help in reducing da temperatues...
-
If you disable power play then it may lock the clocks at full speed (500/800) which just generates heat when you are at idle or don't need full speed, it will also kill battery life. you should reenable it and select max performance while plugged in and max savings when on battery. That way when plugged in it will idle at 199/299 and go up to full speed when needed... no reason to disable it, if on battery and you need more performance just change to max performance while on battery... If you use the clock tool to OC then it overrides the power play anyway and when you 'restore default clocks' it goes back to your power play settings.
-
@thks will reenable and check da temps
-
Your temperatures aren't THATTT off.. it depends where you live too.. I have the Gen 1 i7 720 too and on a cold melbourne australia morning such as now, it's idling for about 55c CPU and 53c GPU.
-
Call me Obsessed, haha, but I did a range of 3dmark06 and found that there is a high correlation between the change in core/mem to the scores. I know you're saying (no duh), but what I found is that you need to get a combined mhz total of 1750mhz to reach 10,0003dmark06 on the mobility 4830!
I am currently at 1660mhz at the moment (combine core+mem) and getting a score of 9563 3dmark!
and I can't seem to push my mem any higher cos it will just crash out to desktop
DAMN I want my 10k 3dmark! -
i did enable powerplay.......here are my temp at idle ( as soon as i start my computer ) on battery.....they seem to be considerably low than previousAttached Files:

temp looks fine to me
mine is always another 10c higher

where abouts do you live? How about your ambient Temperature?
For example, at the moment in melbourne australia, I am guessing it's about 18-20c in my room, and my CPU is idling at 57c, and GPU is at 58c...
but then again, I just finish running a 3dmark.. but it's not going down!
LaMMi -
i'm from india........room temp will be ~ 25 c -
HAHA so my room temp is lower than yours but my envy temps are higher.. damn!
-
@Lammi
If you have the 5830 I don't know why it would be idling so high unless you have it OC'd or have power play disabled. Also it should drop back down to normal idle temps in 2 - 3 minutes after fully stressing it with extended 100% loads (like Furmark burn in test etc.). I have been helping another user with major over heating problems and ahve posted several things to do in order to reduce backround activity and reduce the number of processes and services in Win 7. It starts on this ( HERE) Envy Gen 2 forum page and goes through to the current pages, with a lot of posts that are not revelant in between. Anyway you may want to take a look as your temps seem quite high with the 'cool' room temp you have.
Here is what Temps I get with an i5 540 and 5830, no reason your 5830 should idle any higher than this also ( if you have a 4830, different story):
My room temp is 19C -
Thanks JJB for all that but yeah,, I have the Gen 1 4830, core i7 so that's probably why it's so much hotter
-
Second, go to the MSI site and get the MSI Afterburner utility. Once that is installed you can not only check your load temps with the built in Furmark 3d stress proggie, you can use the utility to reconfigure you fan profile. From the factory, it appears the HP engineers left the fan spinning slowly clear up until about 70c before they ramp it up- my guess is to save power. However, you can dial in more fan lower down to maintain what I consider to be more reasonable temps in the mid 40's. It also leaves a real time temp readout graphic in the menu bar AND in your games/proggies so you can monitor temps from inside your application. A very useful little utility even tho it doesn't perform its main intended purpose which was to overclock the gpu LOL, doesn't work on the 4830 but then we have the amd gpu tool for that
You can set profiles, both 2d /3d and a range of graphical monitoring options.
Worth a look.

Hey,
Just got a 1st gen envy 15 (specs in the sig), and wanted to throw out some initial impressions.
Initial Impressions:
+ Very snappy laptop. Can run games at mostly high settings.
+ Build quality seems good so far.
- Runs kinda warm, even when doing light tasks and running on the battery. CPU's run around 55-65 degrees celsius and GPU runs around 50 . Seems normal for i7 envies but I'm still kinda worried this will limit the lifespan of the CPU.
- Battery life is bad. With the slice attached, lowest screen brightness, Wifi & BT on, Firefox and WMP running, and processor power limited to 25%, I got just under three hours of battery life. Maybe you guys have some tips on this issue?
That's all I really have to say right now. I do like it so far though despite its short comings. Any tips for the temps and battery life would be helpful -
I was just wondering about a couple of issues with this computer, I'm kind of debating between this computer and a macbook pro (and I need a new computer by August 18th).
First of all why are all the critical review scores so ridiculously low? I don't get it at all. Second of all what is the heat like? All of the reviews I read talked about heat and stuff. Third of all what is the battery life with the extended battery? To be honest if it wasn't for all the negative reviews I probably would have gotten this laptop instead of the MBP just from a paper standpoint.
Anyways with my student discount I could snag up an ENVY 15 with i7 720 qm, 5830, 4gb ram, 1080p screen, CDrom Drive, and extended battery for $1400. This is compared to $1700 for macbook pro, but I"m probably going to buy an itouch anyways sometime.
The reason I'm looking at the Envy is the 5830 is better then 330m, and I'm going to be playing some starcraft 2/moderate gaming on this machine. -
@xfiregrunt
- reviews are mostly of the Gen 1 Envy 15, which did have issues with heat. Also there are some potentially polarizing design choices that reviewers may not like (all the ports on one side, no optical drive, slightly unusual keyboard layout)
- if you get pretty much any laptop with an i7, and you game, it's going to get get hot. Gen 1 E15s had some heat issues. Gen 2 E15s , especially ones with i5 CPUs, have no heat problems as reported on these forums.
- with an i5, battery life on the standard 6 cell is about 3 hours. With an i7, about 2.5 hours. With the slice and an i5, you get in the 4.5 range. With the slice and an i7, probably around 4. This is all doing light web browsing with some reduced screen brightness.
Some folks find the slice (2lbs) adds too much weigh and prefer to carry around a second 6 cell to swap out. Of course, this means plugging in while you swap or shutting down to swap, so tradeoffs all around. -
Actually with the slice and i5 you get around 8.5hrs... The slice adds 93Wh to the 6 cells 53Whrs (And 2.7 Lbs...)
-
Wow JJB, didn't realize the slice was that heavy (or provided that much extra juice)
-
What kind of heat would be expected with a good laptop cooler for gaming and no cooler for regular use be like?
Also I can't seem to find an i5 option while looking at the HP student store. I can only see an i7 Envy 15 with 5830. Does the 5830 mean it is 2nd generation?
When you say 4 hours with the slice battery do you mean 4 hours additional (IE about 6.5 hours)? To be honest I don't care about the extra weight. If I were to say get a Dell XPS 16, it weighs like 6.7 pounds, so an extra pound isn't a big deal. I was even considering buying a 10 pound gaming laptop, the only problem was the low battery.
Also how do you hook this up to an old school VGA projector? I don't really want to pay $50 for that. Also will there be a refresh soon on this laptop? The HP Envy 14 has a backlit keyboard and internal disc drive despite being smaller. -
@JJB
Hmmm then something funky must be going on on my machine. With the i7 720 and 4830 I got less than 3 hours WITH the slice attached. I would look at the percentage left on my batteries do some other stuff look at it again and it would be a couple percent lower. This is with the ccc powerplay configured for maximum battery and with power saving settings and with the processor max set to 25%.
I know its an i7 (compared to your i5) but I don't think it should be getting less than 3 hours of juice. Unless theres something Im missing. -
Guess I need some help then. I have tried the MSI Afterburn tool but I can't really get my fan speed up using it.
My 1st gen thing/720QM/4830 idles at 60CPU/60GPU which is scary.
btw, ambient here is like 30C, but still this is way too high isn't it
thanks in advance -
When active (above a few %) the i7's use a lot of power.
Edit: I just saw the part about you setting the CPU usage to 25%, on the my i5 setting that control actually gets worse battery life. The the new CPU's are designed to vary speed based on demand and this control I believe confuses things, I leave all my CPU settings at 0% minimum and 100% maximum in all power plan settings, in other words I let Intel control the clocks the way they designed it .... -
My 1st Gen i7 Envy Idles at really high temps as well... I don't know if it's actually "meant" to be that high or if there's a fault in it.. but I am come to accept that it is going to be hot regardless of laptop if it has a core i7 in it...
It seems that the lowest I can get my CPU down to is mid 50s, and that's with setting the power plan to "power saving" to limit the CPU speed
For GPU, the lowest I have gotten is low 50s, that's with setting the core/mem to 200mhz!
with speeds like those, I might as well use my netbook haha

@JJB
Cool, thanks for all the info and tips. I'll poke the battery around some more. -

) I take my hat off and bow to you. That should not be physically possible since the i7's idle at 15.04 Watts (even when throttled and on battery at 0% with just 1 core laoded) and the 6 cell battery is only 53Wh capacity, so 3 hrs should not even be possible when you add in the GPU, screen, memory, drives etc...
If this is true then do not change a thing, and please post all of you settings, that would mean I should be able to get about 7+ hrs with the i5 on the 6 cell, which idles at 5.3W minimum. Unfortunately the best I have been able to achive, with max power saving settings on every possible thing (including turning off the fans, wifi, B/T, touchpad and speakers) and just letting the machine idle at minimum brightness is 4:10, and that is not using it to do anything at all.... -
@JJB
Returning max cpu to 100% seems to have helped quite a bit. I get about 2 hours of life out of the six cell now and an hour only ate up about 30% of my slice's battery life. This is a lot better than before. Thanks again for the info and tips, JJB. -
Currently, for reason unknown as far as I've seen, HP has removed the i5 from the options list of the E15. It only seems to be available in the QuickShip or Beats models, and even then the only choice is the i5 430m.
JJB corrected me - Slice will probably give you 6-8 hours total of light usage, not the 4 hours total I posted. But the bad news is the slice is heavier than I thought, almost 3lbs. Doesn't seem to be an issue for your situation though.
You'd need an HDMI to VGA cable but you can find ones as Monoprice.com for a lot less than the one you see in the HP accessories.
Refresh is coming, no idea when and really no idea what it will include but according to JJB they would need to do significant redesign to add backlit keyboard so I doubt that will be in a small refresh. I doubt an internal optical drive will be added either. Probably just CPU and GPU changes - and hopefully they decide to use a different webcam that doesn't have "nightvision" and cause everything under incandescent lighting to look washed out with a purple/blue tint. -
FYIW: I just got 2:56 on the 6 cell while using IE8 with 11 tabs, and medium browsing activity and was using Adobe CS4 the whole time doing some final light editing on high res (14MB) photos, not a lot of processing, just cropping and sizing for print etc....
I had changed the CPU power plan to 0% minimum and 25% maximum, just to compare results on battery life (see above post by 'Moviemarketing'). There was actually about a 15 minute reduction with this setting as I generally get 3:10 doing this type work on battery.... So at least with the i5 540M there seems to be no advantage to lowering the CPU value in the power plan settings. -
with an i7-820 and 9 cell battery i can get 4.5 hours.
-
moviemarketing Milk Drinker
yes, I got 5 hours with the six cell before automatic hibernation, critical battery level set to 2%. I don't know if this makes any difference but this was in a relatively cold room (68-70F). I didn't use any battery meter estimate, just actual operating time until hibernation. We just received my wife's refurb 2nd gen, this weekend I will do some thorough testing with both machines and try to recreate and post all the settings here.
-
Your CPU alone would use 75Wh minimum over 5 hours (at idle) and the 6 cell battery is only 53Wh. -
Thanks for everyone's help on this thread, it looks like the Envy might be a good buy.
My final question is that HP was ranked the worst in reliability, but this is probably because I always see these super cheap $450 laptops from them. How does Envy quality compare to that? IE is Envy quality more like Asus (who had the highest reliability) or more like Apple (mid-range). -
How heavy is the overall package of the ENVY 15 normally? I'm asking because my shipment is an unheard of 15 pounds...
-
-
**cant delete own posts?
-
and mine didnt have a slice -
I see, my apologies then.
It's because my Dv6t:SE came at around nine pounds so I was a little dubious.
Also, the quick-ship models do not come with the slice, to my knowledge. -
Hello, just playing around with the webcam, so I tried the "night vision". It didn't seem to work. Going to install new drivers and test again. Any input would be helpful.
Thanks -
Hey JJB the Envy Guru!
do you know how to control the fan speeds? at the moment my cores are cooking at 64c idle and the fans aren't spinnin! -
-
yep! It's set to always on already and at 64c it's still spinning really slow.. can I just force them to blast or something?
-
@Lammi
That's a new one to me. I've had to replace 2 CPU fan assemblies but that was do to a 'rattling' sound at idle, almost sounded like the fan was rubbing on a wire or something (but wasn't). But spinning slowly at those temps is wrong, my fans kick up in speed noticably at 59C then again at 65C and again at 71C. That's with BIOS F 2A. Just tested this with the Everest stability test. Also the 5830 GPU idles around 38C and the fan kicks in higher gear at 53C, not sure of next ramp up temp.... Room temp 68F.
