    Hey guys,

Just got my new Envy 15... I'm kind of on the fence right now whether I want to keep it or not once the MSI Gx640 comes out. It really comes down to temps... this thing is hot (also the touchpad is horrible). I reinstalled Windows, and did everything but update BIOS (still default).

When I boot the computer and it's idling both palm rests get lukewarm almost right away. This is weird considering it's not doing anything.

Right now my CPU (520m) is at 30% load and my temps are between 65c and 70c, running the Battlefield Bad Company 2 updater. The right palm rest is noticeably warm and the left palm rest is hot (still usable). The bottom of the laptop in the front is too hot to touch for more than 10 seconds.

Is this "normal"? I thought this thing was supposed to run cool idle and not get too hot with the i5. I haven't even stressed it to 100% and it's getting hot. I want to see other people's temps (JJBs temps seem way low, even at max load).

Did you update the Synaptics driver and then go into the mouse control panel to the Synaptics section? It allows you to tweak or simply negate most of the annoying things about the touchpad.

It does get warm but it hardly ever gets hot. It sounds like yours may have a problem. What does HWMonitor say?

Surfing the net my 430m is running at 36/41C with a max of 40/43C. Stress testing with both cores @ 100% gives me temperatures in the low 70s. Your temps seem pretty high... what is the ambient temperature?

because the case is metal, u'll get plenty of heat conduction. get something called hw monitor and check your temps. shouldn't be over 70C for your gpu on load

My GPU Runs good with around 62-65C playing GTAIV at Max Settings.

    CPU:
IDLE: 47-49C at complete idle, wifi-on, bright at 70%.
LOAD: 55-58C on very light use in likes of browser, wifi, bright at 70%, listening music and goes upto 65C on playing BluRay with same settings as previous. And playing games stretches to around 70-75C

And my room temp was around 35C at the monitoring.

Just wanted to add observations here:

I have been getting the same temps that bshaun has been getting (idle, load, playing games). The game du jour has been Battlefield Bad Company 2 (BFBC2).

However, I have also noticed something similar (but not exactly the same) as Csinth. For me, after about 10 mins of playing BFBC2, the left and right palm rests become really warm (but not uncomfortably so). What concerns me is the bottom of the Envy 15. It becomes uncomfortable hot (really hot). So hot that there is no way I could put the laptop on my lap (especially if the legs are exposed).

I was under the impression that this laptop was NOT supposed to get that hot on the bottom. Like I said, it surprises me, especially considering that my temps are well within the norms that bshaun and others have seen.

Perhaps JJB doesn't play CPU and GPU-intensive games like BFBC2.

With all that said, I am leaning towards keeping the Envy 15 2nd Gen. It has performed superbly as to what I needed (with exception to the hot laptop bottom).

When I want to game on lap I always add the extended battery in slot, keeps me away from heat. :) Although adds a degree or two to the temps.

Also Thermaltake Ixoft helps if you want to put it on lap.
