Been looking for some pictures comparing the different display panels HP offers with the Envy 15, but I haven't found much.

So I'll just ask those who own it; is there a quality difference in the 720P and 1080P display panels?

For gaming, lower native resolution would be optimal (performance/quality), but if the low-res panels are crap I'd get a full HD display,
turn the resolution down and suffer some downscaling side-effects rather than playing with a crap native resolution..

    Thanks!

Other than number of pixels, I there shouldn't be much difference in the quality. I can't imagine working with only 768 vertical pixels though. If the only thing you use the Envy for is gaming that would probably work, but if you do anything else I'd recommend the high-res screen.

^^^^ agreed. If you're buying the Envy 15 primarily for gaming your money is better spent elsewhere, i.e. something with a 5850/5870. So unless you have vision issues that make it more comfortable to use a lower resolution screen go for the 1080p.

I'm bound to a budget of max 1000$ included shipping to Japan, so if you know of a notebook of better caliber than the Envy 15 (i5,4GB,320GB,ATI5830,2.5kg) for the same price, feel free to let me know. :)

Well, least expensive gamer box I know of is the MSI GX640 with the 5850. Price should be *near* 1100 or better sooo, you may have some trouble doing better than the 15 for that money. It would be worth it tho, as the 5850 is substantially faster than the 5830.

I've read some reviews of the GX640, and the GPU sometimes hit 90-100 degrees under load, so I'd rather have the much cooler 5830 that might last a year or two longer without frying..

on the other hand, the MSI comes with a 3 year warranty, so at least you'd be safe till that ran out. HP's is 1 year.....and again, there is a substantial difference in the fps in games. Whatever floats your boat.
