I have decided to get the Envy 15, with the i7 processor. The HP website does not allow me to upgrade the processor to i7 - the only choice is i5.
I called up sales support and they too could not configure an Envy 15 with i7.
Any guesses if the config has been removed, or it might be available in the near future?

They're probably just low on stock again. I'm sure it'll return, though it might take several days or even weeks.

Any way I got sick of their site and went with the Dell XPS 16, other than the looks it's better than the ENVY.
Good luck waiting man. -
How on earth is the sxps 16 better than the envy?
I have owned both and the envy wins hands down.
Cons of sxps - Heat, throttling, screen blocks only vent, fingerprints, weaker gpu, bulky
Cons of the envy - screen angle (although this has never bothered me), throttled on battery (again this never bothers me as I dont do anything strenuous on battery) -

the same thing happened previously with the elimination of the i7 options from the order page about 2 months ago and they enabled the option again after about 2-3 weeks.

And SXPS is better because YOU CAN BUY IT AT DELL WEB-SITE, but I'm sure that is not bothering you. -

If I understand correctly, it was the first gen Envy 15's that had the heat problems (the ones with ATI 4830 GPU). My wife and I have worked with several different 2nd gen envy 15's, all of them i7's, and none of them had any overheating problems or crashing due to heat. it certainly runs hot when plugged into AC and running demanding apps or games; however, I use a Zalman laptop cooler and it does a great job. If I want to use it on my lap for an extended period of time, I usually unplug from AC and use the slice battery for insulation.
I don't know how much SSD vs. HDD impacts the heat, I imagine it's possible that could be the reason why we haven't noticed any heat problems, as our laptops had SSDs. -
The Envy doesn't have overheating problems. It FEELS hot because of the metal chassis, but the GPU and CPU in the Envy run much cooler than in most machines with the same chips. My CPU barely breaks 70C, same with the GPU.

Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
People make the mistake that feeling and temperature have a extreme correlation.
Different materials gives you different feelings when they have the same temperature, lets say 30c.
With plastic it wont feel hot at all, just mildly warm at best. but with metal you will say that its scorching hot. with water you most of the times wont even say that its lukewarm you say that is more like cold.
the envy 15 HAS ONE OF THE BEST COOLING SOLUTIONS FOR laptops.
this is basic physics. -

Also, unfortunately, I would imagine the temperature of the metal exterior is directly proportional to how well it's dissipating heat from the CPU and GPU.
