    Hi all,

I'm writing this in frustration after talking to HP customer support. I was passed from one to another just to hear the "No" from the "supervisor". Anyway this is not the main point of this thread.

My laptop is out of 1 year warranty. A few months after the warranty expired, my hard drive is dead. I tried left and right with the recovery options that came with the machine (as one of its partitions) but nothing worked. I think the RAID has problem. So I formatted my C drive and reinstall an image of Windows 8. I know that the Windows CD key is embedded in the BIOS, so I don't need a key.

But my Windows 8 cannot be activated. (Yea I played around with all the slmgr commands and slui.exe 3, slui.exe 4... but no luck). I found out that it can only be activated if I installed Windows 8 from the recovery image from HP. They have a page to order and it costs about $50 ish for a 32 GB USB drive that has the 4GB image.

I think when I purchased the machine, I already purchase the license of Windows that came with it (Windows 8). The laptop dies doesnt mean I lose the possession of Windows. So I called them with the hope that they could waive the fee because I have been an HP loyal customer. They told me that I could create the recovery disk when I was under warranty, which I wasn't aware of. And after an hour waiting on the line, being passed from one to another, they said no, they can't waive the fee.

So, is there any iso of Windows 8, or 8.1 from HP RTM-core floating out there that you can share? I would appreciate a lot.

    Thanks.

Sorry but you should of created the recovery disks when you first got the machine either by DVDs or even better a USB stick. Its always good to have the discs incase of a HD failure or if you wanna install windows on a SSD. Even if someone gives you a windows 8 HP RTM iso it wont work with your machine because it would only works for their machine ONLY. Your only options are ordering the recovery discs directly from HP or installing a legal clean install copy of windows. Also another thing, the recovery discs are not covered by the warranty because its your responsibility to create the discs.

Thanks for the answer. But I was not aware that I should create the disk when it was within the warranty. Is there such a written policy somewhere?

The warranty only covers hardware and not software like a OS. The recovery discs are always the customer's responsibility to create.

Either order the discs from HP which its kinda of a rip off or use another copy of windows.
