    Hey guys, just came across this link;

    FRYS.com | HP

Oddly enough, it says it's in stock and shipping. Must be some sort of mistake, as it's not out yet, right?

Also, I'm wondering if anyone can confirm or deny whether or not there will be any additional changes to the hardware, besides the addition of the 3D screen? I'm more interested in knowing whether or not there's a chance that the heat issues have been resolved in this new model. Or furthermore, might this model have its 5850m GPU running at standard clock speed, and not underclocked like in the current Envy 17?

Very nice to see. I wonder how the display will fair for normal 2D use.

According to HP the 3D display is far superior from the current displays in regular 2D content due to the fact that it runs at 120hz refresh rate.

I hope refreshes are coming soon. I've noticed the 14 is out of stock in a lot of places or says discontinued.

For everyday use, have 120Hz displays proven superior to a typical (60Hz) laptop display, or is it a matter of preference?

I don't own a 120Hz LCD TV myself, and I'm kind of questionable about them from the ones I've seen.

Does the price for the one at fry's seem really low to anyone else? 1499 for the i7 envy 3d with the glasses and 2 batterys?

I called them on the phone and they said they had one in stock at that price, so I ordered it, and had them overnight it so hopefully its in my hands tomorrow.

    Congrats on your buy.

Let us know how bad or good is doing managing heat and battery life.
Hopefully the new 3D model does not suffer from the same problems that the previous Envy 17 had.

I've been suspicious the whole time, considering they've had it since last week well before anyone else, and the price is unusually low for what is offered. I too contacted them and they said the pricing and description on the site is accurate, but couldn't bring myself to buy it without hearing anything from people who had gotten their hands on the 3d versoin.

...that said, but I'm looking forward to your impressions tomorrow. Don't keep us waiting too long!

They contacted me back and told me I should have it by 4:30pm tomorrow. When I get it I'll take some pics of everything and post them on here.

Oh and thier site has now changed to "Available for back order". So I guess I really did get the last one they had. But according to the guy on the phone, they do have some available in store in N cali, and apparently it locks the price in if you back order, so when they get more in you will get them for that price. Considering that amazon is selling them for alittle over 1800, I think fry's screwed up somewhere, but I am not complaining :D

Well looks like the Envy 3d wont be here today, as someone "forgot" to pull the order. It will be here tomorrow instead. At least they refunded the overnight shipping costs, although it was a pain to get them to do so.

Just ordered one. It came to 1634 with tax. I got a 50 off coupon on check out.

It says it will be built Nov 5th. I was going to go the Frye's route but I liked the no payment no interest offer from HP so I ordered direct from them.

The Frye one also has a 5400RPM HD but it is bigger. But to be honest I have a 320 gig on my old trusty Asus G50 and I have not filled it up so I think 500 gigs will be just fine.

My concern is will the ATI 5850 be able to run games at essentially 3840X2160?

I have some experience with 3d gaming and I do not get the eye strain...well after 4 hours or so maybe...and the immersion factor is pretty amazing to me.

Also I wonder if the HDMI out is 1.4 spec?

After I get it I will post my impressions.

If I am not mistaken the TrueVision Webcan was also updated.

Now the cam is 1280X800 at 24 franes per second, meaning true HD video conference.
The old Envy (again if I am not mistaken) had 640X480 VGA cam.

Dang it, just when I thought I was out (sold my HP Envy 15 Beats which I loved), they pull me back in with the 3D beast... In for one (thanks BillMeLater). By the way, my Asus G73JH (brand new) now up for sale on ebay to help pay for this beast. Search for G73JH matte screen if interested.

I don't believe that it is actually out yet. From what I can see it will not actually ship till Nov 5th. It does suck that Frye's would lead you to belive they had it is stock.

Mine went from build on Nov 5th to ship on Nov 5th. I ordered direct from HP and when I checked out I got a 50$ off.

Can't wait to get this baby!

No it is out. I just got back from Frys after playing with it a bit. Ive never owned an Envy but my first impressions were just ok..

The touchpad was horrible. It would skip and jump around even when I was using 1 finger. It was warm under the left hand rest but there werent any real games for me to test the heat.

Frys has it instore for 1499.99.

3D Glasses werent there to play with. The sales rep didnt even know that it was 3D and the price label didnt even say 3D. The reason I knew was the model number. The screen is pretty nice. Bright and clear. I havent used another Envy before so I couldnt compare but with it being by the dv6s and the Qosimiso, it was nice. Its brighter than the others and the picture is pretty clear but it wasnt "awe inspiring".

Ive been looking at the Envy for the past few weeks and I was just about to buy the one on Amazon but the 3D refresh came and I've been holding out. Its a beautiful laptop but after trying it out, I wasnt as amazed as I hoped I would be. I was also looking at the Envy 14, but after seeing the differences in resolution, I think anything under 1600x900 is not worth it at all.

Yea I agree. I am on my...hmm...5th laptop and I have had lots of different screens. I won't buy another one without at least 1920X1080.

I have played games in 3d and IMHO makes them so much more immersive.

Okay guys, I wanted to give a quick update. Basically, I had alot of issues dealing with Frys.com. The district manager ended up calling me and trying to find where the problem was. It just so happens, that the Envy17-1181NR is not a 3d model. I know every website has it listed as one (frys, amazon) Even HP has it listed as 3D on thier page. But it's not. I just got back from picking it up locally, and I am typing on it now. no glasses includes, and the word 3D is nowhere on the machine. Hope that helps someone out there. Fry's has pulled that listing off the page after we got it figured out.

Good question. I am on the phone with HP support as im typing this. 2 of thier techs confirmed that this model was 3D and should of came with the glasses. Then sent me over to a diffrent department, and they are telling me it's not 3d. Now im on hold as they are trying to figure out it. Talk about nobody knowing anything. The Envy17-1181NR that I am typing on now, came with no glasses, and it only says Envy 17 in the upper right corner of the screen, instead of ENVY 17 3D.

Envy 17 1181NR suppose to be in the new 3D line.
If I was you I would send the model back to frys.com and get one from amazon (link in the previous page) and they lower the price too :)

Or customize one from hp.com and you are ready to go.

I got nowhere after the Techs transferred me to the sales department. They told me to just return the laptop and buy one from their site. I told them it was unreasonable to expect me to pay a 15% restocking fee, when thier own website says that the model is 3D, as well as thier techs. Got the info from http://tinyurl.com/2fxp8d6 Got nowhere with them, and got tired of arquing with India so I just got off the phone.

This doesn't really have anything to do with the weaknesses of the Envy line, but moreso Frys (and maybe HP) screwing up.

Sorry you got duped, flawed. How do you like the laptop otherwise? It's so strange, amazon.com still has that model listed as being 3D and for sale. I have a feeling you're not going to be the other one dealing with this problem.

Agreed Terminally. I am very happy with the laptop. Even if I dont get the 3D model, I still got a great laptop. It does get hot, and has poor battery life, but I havn't seed a diffrence between that and any other big gaming rigs. Quality was good, no damage, no dead pixels, nothing. Very happy with it. I would recommend a Envy to anyone who asked. I did just get off the phone with a higher up. They referred the issue to a case manager, who will call Mon or Tues. This is a known issue to him, and he said he is trying to get it pulled from Amazon, and other sites right now. I will keep everyone updated if interested.

My understanding of the screen, and I may be wrong here, is that it is much better than the previous model screen. it is a 120Hz screen which will run a native resolution of 1920 x 1080, but swtiches to 13xx-xxx for 3d mode (the exact number I forgot at the moment) It is also supposed to be a bit brighter than the current model. So basically you get a better lcd, with 3d capabilitys as well. Thats my understanding from what I have read here and there about it. Someone feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

I ordered my Envy 17 3D from HP today, build and ship date est. Nov. 11, usually ships sooner in my experience. Happy with my Macbook Air so not in a hurry, used 5 day delivery this time instead of 2 day. Really want the 120hz screen.

Wow I have not seen were it switched resolution for 3d mode. It would make sense to lesson the burden on the GPU I suppose.

Do you have a source for that info?

Pardon my naivety, but does this mean it can downscale without looking like a typical LCD screen would (i.e. poor) for more demanding games? I always thought rendering things in 3D was more demanding on the GPU, despite resolution, since it essentially has to display the image twice.
