I believe the res is 1366x768 max on 3d. Again, I could be wrong on this, I read it somewhere and cannot find it now. Perhaps someone with more knowledge than myself can answer that for sure.

Wrong the resolution on the Envy 17 3D is Full 1080p HD.
Meaning 1920X1080. In fact the new 3D model is only available with that resolution comparing with the regular Envy 17 that also comes with the option of 1600X900.

As of the resolution in 3D mode. 1080p is supported as well since the laptop comes with support Full HD 3D BluRay.

The $1500 starting price point is a great deal I think, although I did add the 2x500GB drives to have 2 HDD cables ready for SSD later. If you do the math, you get a blu ray drive, full HD display at 120HZ, and 3d Glasses for $300 more than the standard Envy 17. Pretty good value I think.

I just ordered the Seagate Momentus 500 gig XT hybrid drive for my Envy 17 3d.
I wonder if I will need a hard drive cage or can get by with the cardboard/foam setup?

It does (or did before), and I'm THIS close to pulling the trigger on it...turns out ENVY 17 3D doesn't have USB 3.0. Kind of a bummer, so I'm still researching my need for it/potential impact of missing that port before buying.

So if your on the fence this is a pretty good deal I think!

Nevermind, I see it now. Ok, I'm about to place my order!

EDIT: I called HP and they confirmed that it does include a USB 3.0 slot. The overview page oddly excludes it, but the specs page mentions it, though I'm still not convinced. I guess I'll just find out when I have it in my hands. Got a i7-740qm, 6GB, 640GB, Blu-Ray, 3D setup for $1460. The tax kind of messed up an otherwise great deal, but still, I'm glad I waited and saved a few extra bucks.

I'm really considering buying this one. If I do decide on it, I'll probably wait for a coupon to pop on Black Friday from LogicBUY. They actually have a $400 coupon right now. Knowing HP that coupon will definitely show itself repeatably. Would love to hear back from buyers :)

i dont know about repeatably honestly. This is the biggest discount HP ever had on envy selections. And black friday the big discounts are mostly for mid to low class laptops in my opinion. I got one today just to make sure :)

Crap. I went onto HP.com to order the ENVY 17 3D and the $400 coupon is now invalid. How can I possibly order it now having to pay $400 more thn I had to yesterday? Now I cant order it at all until they put out another coupon. I refuse to pay full price now.

I am so glad I got this deal for the $400 off. I was almost going to pull the trigger on a Toshiba Qosimo X505 with almost the same specs, but it was over 10 pounds. I happened to start looking again yesterday and the Envy 3D with the $400 off was a steal and it's just over 7 pounds. I used my Discover card so I could get 5% cashback as well, so that knocked most of my sales tax off. I got the base model (I'll upgrade to SSD later) for just over $1200. I can't wait!

The only thing that worries me is the HP support. My god, what a bunch of clowns! Rude attitude, halting speech, and all they do is spout corporate BS. My order was initially declined and, when I called about it, they were very evasive at first and the guy I talked to said "Well, your billing address is different from your shipping address for your credit card." Called Discover. The addresses were the same! I called back and they had to regenerate the order, so now the build date is 2 days later. When I asked whether he could confirm whether the payment went through, he kept on talking about the free shipping. Brick wall.

the 18 qosimo screen is beastly though, but how much cooler with 120hz 2d and 1080p 3d be with a 17 incher?

interesting info on endgadet today that an lcd company has created a 10" wxga and 15.6" 1080p 3d screen that works glasses free. would be nice on an envy 15.

Ok I just called and gave them the code and they said that its not in affect anymore because they probably sold out on it (only a certain number of coupons could be used). So calling didnt work. The girl on the phone was like "why dont we put it together and we'll see if I can save you a little bit". I said thanks but no thanks, I'll wait.

I also asked her about two issues I heard about the original Envy 17 that I wondered if existed in the new Envy 17 3D: The wobbling and the overheating issues. She said she hasnt heard of any wobbling issues with the new one and that the overheating issue was addressed and resolved. Whether she was telling me the truth or not I dunno.

Dammit I missed that coupon andnow I cant buy one!

I just called a 2nd time and got a different person. He said once its gone theres absolutely no way to turn it back on again and that alot of people are in my shoes. He said that was it and theres nothing he can do and was very apologetic. I asked if he thought theyd do it again he said yeah they do something like every couple of months. So Im gonna have to wait it out.

It would be a serious shame for HP to still use HDMI 1.3C for the 3D envy, as the new XPS 14" is able to output to a 3Dtv due to a 1.4 hdmi port.

It stills says in production and scheduled to ship today.....since I chose free shipping I will not get it till next Friday.

Armoured the spec sheet says HDMI 1.3c but as I have posted before the spec sheet also says it wont play Blue ray disks

You do know theres hardly any screens out there with HDMI 1.4 other than hdtvs... hence why theres only like 1 line of laptops that have them right now. The only reason the new XPS has it is so they can say their laptops have "3D capabilities." Dell is promoting that the new XPS laptops have 3d capabilities... which is stretching the truth because they cant display 3d materials but rather play 3d stuff on external 3d capable displays (hence the hdmi 1.4 port)

You can output stereoscopic 3d material using the ENVY 17 3D as well... the signal just wont be in 1080p. This is the same method SONY uses for the PS3 to get it to output a 3d signal using its hdmi 1.3 port.

That's a totally different issue. The spec sheet doesn't say that it WON'T play bluray, the spec sheet (or rather the footnote) was incorrect and was referring to a system that should have had an HD-DVD dirve. An incorrect footnote and an incorrect specification are two totally different things. This machine DOES NOT have hdmi 1.4.

The HP spec sheet doesn't say, but the Mini-DisplayPort hopefully is v1.2, which can handle HD3D and would work well with the 120Hz display. HDMI 1.4 and mini-DisplayPort 1.2 on the Envy 17 3D would be extremely nice, but I guess we'll see.

    Found this online:

The DisplayPort v1.2, scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of 2009, will bring new features including higher performance, multiple streams, higher speed auxiliary, a new mini connector as well as additional enhancements, while it will maintain backwards compatibility with the currently available DisplayPort v1.1a.

The performance is doubled to 5.4Gbps per lane, resulting to an overall bandwidth of 21.6Gbps (5.4Gbps x 4 lanes), compared to the current specifications (10.8Gbps). This will enable emerging display applications such as 3D Full HD Stereo content at 120Hz and High Color Range Quad Full HD (3840 x x2160 p) video over a standard DisplayPort connector.

The only problem is that there are like zero displays out there with a displayport port... You'll have to get a displayport to hdmi adapter which essentially cuts the bandwidth to 1/4th its original... and you end up worse than if you had just gone the hdmi route

Good point. Well, if there isn't HDMI 1.4, then that definitely takes this rig down a notch until more stuff comes out with the DisplayPort. My brand new Pioneer VSX-1120-K receiver that's 3D ready with HDMI 1.4a doesn't have any DisplayPorts :(.

I think that if HP call this laptop a 3D ready laptop, they should include anything necessary to play media in 3D, including HDMI 1.4, otherwise I might return it and get a Dell XPS 17:

the hdmi 1.4 isn't a deal breaker for me. i'll need to buy a 3d panasonic player anyway in order to get avatar when its released. i figure most people who are splurging for a 3d tv will also have a 3d ready player (ps3 anyone?). my two cents.
