So I've had an issue with my Envy 17 2xxx non-3D series that is really starting to annoy me.

The only game I play is Dota on wc3. The game is like 10 years old so shouldn't have any trouble running on a 6850m or integrated graphics to be honest.

Well what happens is that after an hour, the fan on the left side of the laptop starts going off and the computer drops to 1-2fps. It takes me like 2 min to minimize the game and everything is EXTREMELY slow for a few minutes.

After a while the fan slows down and the speed resumes.

Sounds like overheating right? Except my temps never really go about 70 degrees on my CPU and it happens ON BOTH INTEGRATED OR DEDICATED graphics.

    What is going on?

Sounds more like throttling...what bios do you have installed in your machine? What is Coolsense set to?

I don't know what Coolsense is.

Perhaps you could supply a newbie with more information =D

OK...first...bios for the Envy 17 is now f.18. You might want to download and install it. f.15 was the first bios released to fix the throttling issue

...so you may need a bit of help from Coolsense. It is part of HP Software framework:

HP Software Framework HP ENVY 17t-2000 CTO 3D Edition Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

Install that and HP Support Assistant

HP Support Assistant HP ENVY 17t-2000 CTO 3D Edition Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

The download I gave you is for an older version of Coolsense. I use it on my new Envy because I like the way it works. Keep mine on Performance. Coolest setting will basically disable turbo boost when temps get to a certain level. In your case...might not be a bad idea....the CPU has enough power for what you want, without turbo boost. Performance (setting I use)...basically kicks the fan on high and lets the CPU do it's thing...I will see temps hit 90C to 92C from time to time...but so far, so good. Try these three downloads...new bios will also fix "sleep" mode issues the machine had.

Don't worry that the model number may not be exactly the same as yours...they all use the same basic software and bios

I really appreciate the help! I'll try that out and let you know what happens.

So in this case, its a good idea to have HP software, who would have known =p lol.
