So i am planning on buying a laptop within the next month. Something with sandy bridge, and somebody on here recommended the HP Envy.
How is the heating with them for gaming? not heavy gaming, but i heard the heating absolutely sucks. Is this true?
How is HP's customer support/warranty? Any good? or stay away?
Between the HP Envy 17 with sandy bridge, and the MSi GT680, which one is recommended?

any idea on heating issues with the Envy 17?
Would it be fixed in the new sandy bridge model? or would the same problem persist? -
HP's CoolSense Technology has been introduced in the SB lineup This is expected to reduce the Heat output and more over the New SandyBridge processors run cooler than the Clarksfield i7 Quads also allowing switchable graphics.

Thanks for the response, i read up on that as well. Sounds good, but will have to see.
Anybody know when the Envy 17 with sandy bridge is going to be released? Been looking around, but i can't find much. Apparently they said the 9th of January. But i don't see anything. -
But I suspect it will be sooner since Alienware will have their M17x R3 (thier first 3D laptop) ready to order tomorrow!!! January 10!!!! HP better get ready now!

I would rather have the HP, but if there that slow well then they lost a sale -
HP Infuses New Consumer PCs with Latest Technologies, Including Advanced Cooling and Beats Audio
Now, then, there are some implications that I (personally) think are compelling, given the language in the January 4 press release:
# The powerful HP ENVY 17 line features advanced cooling technology and the latest graphics as well as free gaming software on the HP ENVY 17 3D model.
# The HP Pavilion desktop and notebook PC lines provide superb performance with future second-generation Intel® Core processors and AMD Radeon graphics technology. Select HP Pavilion desktops also feature Beats Audio, a unique, high-performance technology developed by HP and Beats by Dr. Dre.
We know that the 2nd point, above, is already here. the press release gets more specific:
"The HP Pavilion dv6 and dv7 are expected to be available on Jan. 9 in the United States with starting prices of $899.99 and $999.99, respectively."
And this happend right on the money. the CTO models appeared on the website by January 9. Some retailers even had them out sooner.
"The updated HP ENVY 17 is expected to be available soon with pricing to be determined. "
HP has to know that by announcing the "soon" coming of the updated envy 17, that sales of existing envy 17s will drop as people wait. My bet says HP knows this, anticipates this, and plans for it. The way I see it, the updated Envy 17 will be coming as soon as they convert their mfg line and update their sales channels, and I think that time will be measured in weeks, not months. -
I do really hope it comes soon, im dying for a laptop. My plans were to buy the Msi gt680 or gx680 when they come out if Envy does not give us a release date.
After using a laptop for an entire year i just hate going back to a desktop and trying to use it, just feels uncomfortable.
But honestly HP is doing a horrible job with their release. They should give pricing, or a release at the minimum so consumers know. I would take an Envy any day, but if i don't get a release before the Msi comes out then im picking up an msi
One last thing, does HP.com ship to canada? even though the new dv lines came with sandy bridge hp.ca does not have them. This sucks, that means i'd have to wait even longer for an Envy 17 if the release date in Canada is different.
And would you buy the laptop from hp directly? or from a store like futureshop/bestbuy?
I have never boughten an electronic online, so i have no idea how returns would work, repairs, etc. -
I have purchased several HP desktops and laptops through the years, both for myself and my kid's college. My current laptop is a 3.5 yr old dv8000t with XP-pro and two disk drives. it is working just fine (I've only had to replace the fan and I did that myself out of warranty) but it won't handle heavy editing in Lightroom 3. On one occasion, HP sent a repair guy out to my home to replace a (desktop) motherboard. YOu could call the Sales center and probe bit on how the warranty works, as I just don't have a lot of experience there. I hear you, though, on the merits of purchasing from a brick-and-mortar store with a good return policy. I've just had good luck with HP online so I'm sticking with it. not to mention that the way I configure a PC is seldom found in a store (I'm going for SSD + a 7200rpm drive, 8 GB, the 72% gamut display, but no blu-ray. I'm into photo editing, not so much into movies).
I like using the on-line configure-to-order (CTO) system and have always used either the website itself, or the sales call center to build a custom PC and have it shipped directly to me. I find that when HP announces a release date it generally means thats when the models will appear on the website, even though some retail channels might beat the schedule.
Yes, the rumor and blog sites have really hashed up the pricing speculations. HP has announced no pricing for the Envy, and I find that disapointing as well. if you ask me, this means they are reading the competitive landscape. You can imagine that for HP to announce pricing and availability, it must mean that the CTO and pre-configured mfg lines are set up, volumes anticipated, documentation is ready on the website, and the distribution channel is stocked by the announced date, etc. The further ahead they announce this date, the less certain they will be that everything is ready to meet customer demand. The last announcement was made only 5 days in advance.
As for shipping to Canada I wish i had credible information but all I can suggest is that you could call the HP sales center and ask re: current Sandy Bridge dv models and Canadian availability. You could also call retail stores like best buy or the like and see if they know anything.
i have no data to support this opinion, but I would be surprised if the canadian localized Envy models were delayed beyond the U.S. but from your comments it sure appears that is the case for the dv7ts...
