Edit: mods, please move to the Envy 17" subforum, just realized that it existed...

HP ENVY TouchSmart 17.3" TouchScreen Laptop 8GB Memory 1TB Hard Drive m7-j010dx - Best Buy

Saw this in store yesterday. Screen looked amazing, and I believe it is a glossy IPS. Keyboard has a nice feel. Anyone have hands-on time with this laptop yet? I know it's pretty new (they were putting them out as I got there) but I thought I would open this up for feedback now. Keyboard has the same feel as my elitebook, and is backlit!

I was looking at 15" IPS laptops in this price range with the same specs, so this seems like a pretty killer value.

    Edit:

It seems that this same setup is available from HP directly at a lower cost under the moniker HP ENVY 17t-j000 Quad Edition Notebook PC, but includes a blu-ray player instead of DVD player. http://www.shopping.hp.com/en_US/ho...1TM?HP-ENVY-17t-j000-Quad-Edition-Notebook-PC
Add-ons that the BB version have are 1080p display (IPS I think, +90), bluetooth(+15), backlit keyboard(+30), bringing the HP total to $964 right now after instant discount.

I tried to get a look at this model at a Best Buy today, but they didn't have a floor display unit set up. I mostly wanted to check out what you said about the screen. If it is indeed an IPS screen I'd definitely be interested in buying one. HP's specs say it's only 1600x900 resolution, however: HP ENVY TouchSmart m7-j010dx Notebook PC Product Specifications | HP® Support so I also wanted to verify that (as BB's specs say 1080p). Best Buy's specs also say that the screen is anti-glare type, but you're saying the one you saw was glossy? This matches with that HP specs page, as it says "BrightView", which is what HP calls their glossy panels.

Anyways, I'll probably head back in another day or two to see if they've put out a floor display unit. If anybody else has seen a unit at a Best Buy, please see about these things:

    1) Glossy or anti-glare screen?
    2) 900p or 1080p native resolution?
    3) Wide viewing angles indicating IPS screen?

Edit: Also, I did see the model's info/price card, and it said the battery life is rated at 8 hours 15 minutes. The non-touchscreen version is rated at 9 hours 30 minutes at HP's site: http://www.shopping.hp.com/en_US/ho...8AV?HP-ENVY-17t-j000-Quad-Edition-Notebook-PC
I have no experience with touchscreen notebooks, but I'm assuming that the touchscreen is what is cutting down that battery life? Do other touchscreen notebooks allow one to disable the touch functionality?

I was at a local Best Buy today and saw both this and the new m6-k015dx on display. I can help you answer some of the questions that you have.

    1. Both the new m6 and m7 have a glossy screen (similar to the Infinity displays from way back when).
    2. I did not check the display resolution in the Control Panel, but I'll have to side with HP on this one - it looked like 1600x900 to me.
    3. Not sure. Looking at the pictures, the m6 does not have an IPS display (although I may be incorrect on this) and the jury is out on the m7.

Here's a pic that I took of the new m7. I'll be posting up a new announcement thread about these new models shortly.

I guess I missed the detail of the HP computer that I linked to having no touchscreen, so I guess I can assume the display may not be as good as the best buy version.

The details of the HP website are different from BestBuy`s details and it must be anti-glare screen, 1080 resolution and viewing angles. Otherwise it is a false advs and BB can be suit.

    1) Glossy or anti-glare screen?
    2) 900p or 1080p native resolution?
    3) Wide viewing angles indicating IPS screen?

The screen at BB is glossy, and it is a touchscreen. I don't think touchscreens come in matte. I wasn't able to get a rep to tell me if it is IPS or not, noone seems to know... but the viewing angles suggest so. The BB model is not available on HP's website.

Bleh, I'm looking for a matte screen, so my interest in this model just died. Also, if it is 1080p I'd also want a blu-ray drive.

The HP version has a matte screen, and a blu-ray drive. Probably not IPS.

THE NEW HASWELL ENVY LAPTOPS DO NOT HAVE IPS DISPLAYS AVAILABLE< PERIOD. enough with the "its glossy so it must be IPS"....they are ALL BRIGHTVIEW crap...HP has ruined the Envy name...you will have to wait for SPECTRE haswell versions...if they even make them.

And how do you know this? As I said, the 17" envy at Best Buy appeared to be IPS, and I looked hard at it. The particular model is not listed on HP's website. Furthermore, the models on the HP site offer an optional "17.3-inch diagonal Full HD Anti-glare LED-backlit Display (1920 x 1080)" -- ie NOT brighteview.

I will receive the laptop tomorrow and I was looking all the comments. My main interest was to get a 1080 resolution and a touch screen matched for window 8, and it accomplish with that. The rest seen to me irrelevant as a glossy or IPS, I believe that for $1025 it the best value in laptops on the market.

I saw this unit today and it looked fantastic. The only real downside, if it is one, is that it doesn't have dedicated graphics. I'm not a heavy gamer, but I want something that can do whatever I want to throw at it. I'm not sure if the 4600 graphics are enough.

I'd also love to find out if it has two HD bays, or a mSATA or M.2 slot, as I need 1TB storage but would also really like SSD benefits.

I also wish it had a Blu-Ray drive if they're going to put an optical drive in at all.

I can confirm it does indeed have 2 HD bays, although the cable needed is not included. Too bad because it doesn't use the same as my previous DV7. For now I'm running a 256 SSD, boot time about 10 secs. Was a pain because I couldn't manage to get a clone of the included HD to boot. Had to install Win 8 from scratch, and have updated to the 8.1 build preview.

Don't know enough about mSATA or M.2 slot, but can post a pic of the opened back if anyone's interested.

Have you used it for any games yet? Any sense of how the integrated graphics are working out?

Will do in about 1/2 hr. (just sat down to eat :)

I don't really game, so the integrated graphics is not too important to me. I have been playing Blu Ray movies with TMT5 via ISO's and Folders from a WHS server. No hiccups, picture looks great.

Thanks! So the empty bay is on the left, but you're saying it needs a cable? I thought drives just plugged into those connectors directly on mobile devices, no cable needed. I'm not sure if that's an M.2 or mSATA connector (or something else) just from looking, but maybe someone else here will know.

Is the bay with your main HD/SSD on the side, or am I missing it here in this picture? I see memory on top right, what I assume is the miniPCI card for WiFi on top left, but I'm not sure what's on bottom center or bottom right.

    - So the empty bay is on the left, but you're saying it needs a cable? (yup)
    - I thought drives just plugged into those connectors directly on mobile devices, no cable needed. (Nope, every one I've ever with a 2nd HDD bay needed cabling.)
    - I'm not sure if that's an M.2 or mSATA connector (or something else) just from looking, but maybe someone else here will know. Beats me.
    - Is the bay with your main HD/SSD on the side, or am I missing it here in this picture? (The main bay is on the left, in my case it's a Crucial SSD)
    - I see memory on top right, what I assume is the miniPCI card for WiFi on top left, but I'm not sure what's on bottom center or bottom right
    - bottom center is the 2nd HDD bay. There's some sort of metal template there for some reason. It looks like you can remove the screw on the bottom right of the 2nd bay.
    - Notice the cable connections under the CMOS battery? The one to the right of the battery cables is the unused SATA port.

Hope this all helps. I posted some initial comments here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/off-topic/440683-post-your-last-purchase-996.html#post9269980

I actually plan on replacing / returning for an XPS 18. Seems it's really no more than a 17" tablet with a hardwired keyboard. The XPS 18 has a b/t keyboard. Just waiting for Dell to upgrade to Haswell.

There's 2 screws I see in the bottom center....are you saying that removing those screws will allow us to add a second hard drive?

And thank you so much for the picture and actually providing clear answers.

Oh ok, I think I see it now -- i thought the left bay was empty in your pic, but on closer look I take it your SSD just doesn't have any labels on that side. Thanks for the help!

XPS 18 is a very cool concept, just doesn't quite have the specs I want. We'll see what they do when they refresh it.

It just the screw on the bottom right. Looks like it's fairly easy, but honestly I haven't tried yet. I don't have the needed cable and I'm pretty sure I'm gonna be returning it for the Dell.

Yeah, the SSD is just sitting there, not permanently mounted. No moving parts so no real worries.

The XPS 18 refresh is supposed to have the 4th gen I7 (Haswell) as well as NFC. Only real difference is no optical drive and honestly, (other than installs) I can't remember the last time i fired up a DVD/CD/BD disk. Really looking forward to WiDi on it as the Win8 preview has WiDi built in.

We'll see. (oh, and if you're interested in a m7-j010dx for $1028.99 just let me know :) )

Sooooooooooo, went to BB yesterday and a rep there told me the display is NOT IPS. It looks quite good though, so if it is not, then I might have no hesitation getting the matte non-IPS models direct from HP.

I went to BestBuy today to look at the HP m7-j010dx based on the discussion in this thread, and was disappointed to see that it definitely IS NOT an IPS display. It's not a bad display, but it''s quite obvious that it's not IPS since it exhibits the usual TFT color inversion when viewed from high and low angles. There were several laptops there with true IPS displays, and the difference was quite obvious.

I actually looked at every single laptop screen in store and the several that I thought were IPS all had the same viewing angles. Is there a way to tell other than off-angle color inversion? I might have to snap some pics to defend my display-identification honor!

Edit: It was sitting right next to this IPS-endowed laptop and the screens looked identical quality-wise: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Acer---...218951943210&skuId=8924136#tab=specifications

That Acer has a fantastic display. If the 17" Envy looked as good as the R7, then I may need to return my Envy 15 j1000. The panel is driving me insane with the vertical banding, inversion, and limited viewing angles. I played around with the R7 at Best Buy and it was perfect from nearly all viewing angles.

I had a chance to visit Best Buy to compare the 17", and although the panel is worlds better than the Envy 15", I don't think its an IPS. I checked the viewing angle and it indeed is far better than the Chi Mei panel in the 15, but it doesn't handle viewing angles like the Acer. Could be a different panel than the one you saw though. They wouldn't let me install anything to determine the panel manufacturer.

Now that the 17" touch is on HP's site as a CTO, what I'd really like to know is whether the panel in BB's 17" is any different from the FHD panel available from HP direct. The BB config is nice, but I'd probably rather order it with discrete graphics and some other options changed. But I did think the screen at the BB one is very good, and early on some thought it was an IPS panel. I don't know enough to tell the difference, but IPS or not, it looks good. I certainly hope the CTO option from HP has the same panel.

Agreed. The 17" panel looked as good as any other in the store today, sans the Acer with the IPS, but it wasn't far behind. I am likely going to return my 15 and order the 17 once a 20% coupon becomes available. There is a 15% off until 7/20 for the touch smart, and a 20% for the non touch. (CUSTOM15, and CUSTOM20 respectively)

Try the tests at Viewing angle - Lagom LCD test (or just search for "lcd tests" on Google). It should give you a good idea on whether the screen is a TN, MVA/PVA or IPS screen.

I saw the bb model. The screen, if TN, was really good. I played some dark videos from dead space and noted to ghosting. Ibwas also taken aback by the not so horrible black level detail.

IPS? Dunno. Great viewing and and black levels. Bright colors. Whatever it is - nice

Now where is the damn 750m!!!

    hp 15inch brightview from hp.com - Copy.jpg hp 17 inch antiglare at bestbuy - Copy.jpg
download the images and look at 1:1 ratio (actual image size) in your computer. the preview in the post does not show the differences.

the attachments show the actual difference between the brightview 15inch and antiglare 17in lcd. the 15inch brightview was so terrible that it did not look like a 1080p. it was pixellated. i had to return it. i had to pay about 150$ more to order the 17inch from hp directly (which has blueray player and the antiglare screen, 2 year warrenty). i hope it is worth it, i will give an update after i get the laptop.

my order configuration (about 1100$ after 15% off and ca tax)

Yeah that is a pretty big difference. I happened upon a BB with internet connected to the laptops, and neither screen is IPS, although the 17" does look pretty good. Now that I have seen several screens though, it is apparent that the 17" touch screen is not as spectacular as I though wrt off-angle viewing.

Good Lord!!! That's the worst screen I've never had the displeasure of seeing. But, all the videos I've seen of the 15t don't seem THAT bad. I'm beginning to suspect its a calibration issue with a majority of the screens or something. No one in their right mind would willingly sell that. Admittedly, that 15t's panel has terrible viewing angles but viewable pixels on a 15 inch 1920 x 1080 screen is unforgivable.

Hi I'm from the UK and i'm looking at buying one of these as my uncle is going to New York next week.
I was just wondering if anyone knew if the screen on the M7 actually is 1080p or 900p.
Any replies would be a great help

    Thanks Sam

This is the woot.com deal of the day today. I just purchased it for $705 shipped.

Any suggestions where to get a spare battery and the hardware to install the second hard drive? Would love to add/load an SSD and keep the 1TB as a second HD.

Any suggestions where to get a second power adapter also?

    Thanks!

Hardware should be available from these fine folks: newmodeUS.com It's where I've gotten 2nd bay mounting hardware for two DV7s in the past.

I always found my 9-cell batteries on Amazon, so there you go. Man this is a HECKUVA unit, and that Woot price is VERY tempting.

I still have barely used my DV7-7243CL...
