I would like to buy a high school graduation and college notebook computer for my son. This would be his first laptop. Maybe light gaming.

I have looked at the Envy 6t and the Pavillion Dv6t. I can configure them for around the same price especially with the sale going on right now.

Which of these would be the most reliable? Least amount of overheating and fan noise would also be a concern.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Hey Jet, I have the new dv6t and I can tell you that I love it. I use it for writing and if you go with the 1080p option it is really easy on the eyes. It is good for gaming but there are a lot of problems with this line of notebooks so far. I think the envy6t will be a great option if your son is going to college soon as it is ultra portable and the battery is supposed to last a long time. The dv6t is known to over heat but my dv6t is sitting in my lap and the fan is silent as I type this reply. It all depends on how he is going to use it. Once you start playing games any laptop will heat up but for word documents and web browsing the heat and fan noise is negligible. In my honest opinion unless your son is really into gaming I wouldn't buy the dv6t as it does lack a bit of portability.

Thanks for the info. He would do older games like Grand Theft Auto etc. I'm just not sure if he would keep it in the dorm or be carrying it around.

Well the envy 6t does have gaming graphics but the only downside to that laptop is the screen resolution is so bad for gaming. Most games would still definitely be playable but not as well as the dv6.

The breaking point for us with the dv6t vs the Envy was that you CANNOT change the battery on the Envy. It's sold as one solid unit. This means that down the road.. you're going to be SOL once it wears out.

We went with the dv6t for this exact reason.
