Hello,
There is a lot of information out there, but I seem to still have a problem doing this. I was wondering if anyone had experience with this and could help me with this. Well I recently got a HP Envy, with a 750 hd. I then bought a 120 SSD and was able to install it with no problem. The problem is I have my operating system on the 750 gb hd not the SSD. My goal is to have it on the SSD.
What I did was downloaded a program called acronis true 11. I used that program to clone the HD to the SSD. While doing the process it says it has to restart and then after restarted nothing happens. Either im doing something wrong or it just doesnt work correctly.
So I was wondering, how do I get to my goal of cloning my 750 gb HD to my SSD. I would like to do that. I dont care about using acronis but I have it and if anyone has experience with it I can try to use that to figure it out. Thanks for your help

I had good luck using GParted to clone my drive, but the process may be a little more involved than you're willing to commit to.

Well, few things. I just did this about 3 weeks back with my new ENVY 17.. I used a program called EASEUS partition manager. That worked perfectly for copying over to the ssd.. Honestly, that was the easiest clone program I've used. After using that, I "Got" Paragon Alignment Tool to fix how the ssd was lined up. I don't know the exact specifics of what it does, but it basically made my ssd a LOT faster. I went from a boot time (before I aligned it) of ~20 seconds, to now ~14 seconds. While that may not seem like much, it's noticeable when you're booting it up when class is starting. I know Lifehacker did a post and basically did what I did... But they didn't use paragon... They used a linux distro that aligns it.. I tried that, and I had to jump through a bunch of hoops... only for that to not work.. Here's the link for that lifehacker post btw: How to Migrate to a Solid-State Drive Without Reinstalling Windows

I did this just yesterday.
The steps I took:
-Used Paragon Migrate to SSD (good recommendation, sadly program not free) to do the migration itself. The program also realigned the SSD properly.
-As BIOS would not let me choose boot drive (silly!), I used Win DVD to repair the cloned instalation. This left me with a boot menu.
-Formatted old installation and then used msconfig to remove it from the boot menu
-Profit from awesome speeds! -
I used Acronis True Image Home to clone my drive to an SSD. I don't believe you can do this on an operating drive, so you'd need to pull both drives and clone them using another computer. That's how I did it any way, and it worked perfectly.

Then, I removed the drive and put the SSD in. Cloned it to another HDD for safekeeping (has my recovery partition on it, which I removed from the SSD). Painless and fast... -

Why does nobody mention the Intel Data Migration software? It is also free and worked great for me. I bought an Envy 17 3000 with 750gb HDD off of ebay and bought a 160gb intel ssd off of ebay and popped into second bay, used the software to clone the C: drive, swapped the drives in the bays, it booted up and has been running fine since. Formatted the 750gb drive in the second bay and am using it to store files. SSD is for OS and apps. Turned off page file and moved all temp directories for IE and windows to D:. No issues.
