Hey, i've recently bought a BookArc so that I could put my HP Envy 15 vertically to decrease the amount of space it takes up on my desk.
I was just wondering if this vertical placement would be bad for the laptop or if there is no difference between running horizontally flat on a desk versus vertically using a stand/mount like the BookArc.
My HP Envy uses SSD and I have the fans pointed down (for the front-facing fans), so I guess I'm primarily worried about the CPU + GPU? Plus the fans, heh. And the SSD too, although from my limited knowledge I drew the conclusion given the nature of SSD drives, it wouldn't matter what placement they are in, same as RAM (is this correct?).
Thanks in advance!

Placement won't matter. It may actually be better because the bearings in the fans are meant for radial loads. It doesn't matter enough to make a difference however, because the fan blade itself is so light.

I have mine sitting upright all the time when I have it plugged in at my desk (connected to another monitor). So far, no issues, and, to be honest, the heat levels are actually lower. Just make sure you do not bump it or anything because my HDD will skip and cause the computer to stutter if I am running something. Just a heads up.

If the lid is closed then HP driveguard is much more sensitive to bumps, just FYI.
Disable driveguard if you're using an SSD because you don't have to worry about bumps. -
Thanks for the responses!

If anything it would actually be better for cooling as more surface of the laptop will be exposed to the air. I am not sure for the fans but judging from the towers I have build any direction you put the fans they dont mind
.

How do you like the BookArk? Looks like a neat product! Do you have any issues using your Envy with the screen closed?
-
Oh, I forgot to mention.
Running the Envy 14 with the screen closed will result in higher temps. A large portion of air gets sucked in through the keyboard. But OP is using an E15, so he's okay. -
On a random note, it has a pretty nice packaging, heh.

So far, no issues with the Envy vertically with the screen closed. I have the forward vents facing down so hopefully that'll help.
@eafd - Nice to know. I hate when the fan is under the keyboard... 80%+ of the time I hook up my laptop to a monitor. Glad to see that isn't a problem with the E15, although... the heat on that thing = comes in handy when I have cold hands in winter, lol. -
Does anybody know if the bookarc will hold an Envy 17?
Right now (when I'm not mobile obviously) I keep mine in my desk cabled up, but it gets hot in there so I was either going to install a fan to circulate air or find a way to bring the laptop out into the open. -
I *think* it should be able to hold the Envy, but not 100% sure.
If you can buy it from a physical store (ie. Apple store), you can always return it for a full refund if it doesn't work out. -
I haven't used the stand or anything, but when I lay my Envy on its screen with its chassis pointing upwards (maybe this is a stupid thing to do, but I don't know) the fans started speeding up after a few mins. So I checked the temperatures and they'd gone up quite a bit. Don't think any vents were blocked, so I have no idea why this was the case.
HP Envy Placed Vertically = Ok?
