I decided on this over the Asus G73. Must tell you that having a four year on side with Accidental Damage from ONE company is much better. All specs of this machine rival the G73, except the 6850M vs the GTX460M. I think that the video cards are a wash
Also...for anyone who is thinking of this. Optimus is NOT part of this machine. You get just AMD HD Graphics...there is no Intel graphics to share. Just an FYI.
-
you mean the envy? since ALL new SB i7 cpus have an integrated on-die gpu ( hd3000 in case of the 2360qm), it actually should feature the switchable graphics option, except the
applies to the envy... but that really would be a major fail by HP.

Well Optimus is a nVidia-only thing. ATI does do switchable, but so far, it seems to be a proprietary OEM thing, where it is up to the OEM to decide to implement it or not, like what HP did with the Envy 14 and with the right chipset from Intel. -
Supposedly with the Sandy Bridge and the new generation i7, the machine is supposed to be more efficient. Built for multimedia and some muscle. I stand corrected on the Optimus thing...but no switchable graphics with High End HD cards.
-
Most people (if not all) probably don't even need optimus/switchable graphics on a 17.3" high performance laptop, anyway... I mean, it's not like they're going to be getting a 17 inch performance laptop for battery life and portability
-
The good thing about optimus is that it keeps your laptop quite a bit cooler when you dont need the 3D card (not playing games)
-
Im willing to bet that the Envy is going to be downclocked vs the G73

A good guess if the chassis is still the legacy setup. I am surprised they didn't do anything to improve cooling or space for the SB refresh. -
This appears to apply to the competition, to be sure, but with all the anticipation and following the progression of this release, why is it so easy to apply this generalization to HP Envy 17 3D when HP has told us otherwise?
Bingo StrikeSaber47. it seems we have lost the memory of what HP told us last January 4 regarding the Envy 17: "... AMD switchable graphics technology dynamically alternates between integrated graphics and AMD Radeon HD 6850 discrete graphics..."
Did I mention HP claims switchable graphics with the 6850?
Did I mention HP says that this applies to the SB Envy 17?
Do y'all remember that the SB Envy 17 is built with the 6850 GP?
no kidding. where o where o where has it ever been established with any validity that this exception applies to the Envy? where is this coming from? If you ask me, the Envy 17 3D could very well be the only HD 3D laptop available with true switchable graphics. It's not like the January 4 announcement was an empty promise either, or contained some sneaky fine print excepting the Envy 17 3D, because the current product description (product demo content) on the Envy 17 3D ordering page confirms this as well:
"...Available with a breathtaking 44cm/17.3 inch diagonal HP Ultra BrightView infinity display with HP 3D Cinema Technology, supporting full HD (1920x1080) resolution and switchable graphics."
did I mention HP claims switchable graphics with the SB Envy 17 3D?
did I mention that the SB Envy 17 3D has an edge over the competition? -
Hp wouldnt say they are implementing switchable graphics in the sb 17 this late in the game unless it was a fact. I'm with you. HP will have a serious edge on the competition if they are the only ones doing it.
HA dlleno thanks for reminding everyone and giving hope.
