Has anybody needed to rely on the extended warranties provided by HP? I am looking for feedback as to whether they have been necessary or if HP tends to have a good built quality that doesn't really require the warranty.
Thanks in advance for any personal experiences you can share.![]()

Well, some people say that HP notebooks are junk, but I seem to see some people saying that about most every brand.
The way I look at it, if it's glitch-free through the two year warranty, the extra years probably aren't worth paying much for (especially since the thing will probably be worth half what I paid for it by then).
If it's unreliable during the two-year warranty, it'll get listed on Craigslist after a visit to the repair facility, "excellent condition, still under warranty" and I'll never get the chance to use the extended warranty.
OTOH, some people tend to break things. They are often happy when they buy accident insurance on an expensive phone or laptop, and get a free refurb after they destroy the first one. -
I agree that two years is a nice balance between cost & coverage for most laptops. I went to three years on my DV4T, which was probably more than necessary.
Amusingly, it broke at 11 months in the original warranty. It was quickly repaired and has otherwise been fine. I use it every day.
I'm on my second HP/Compaq laptop in five years, and apart from one minor problem, they've been flawless. I don't think HP is any more "junk" than any other major brand. Taking care of it and not abusing the hardware makes more difference, IMO. -
I don't know why people don't like HP's. I have had this one for about 5 years and really have not had any problems with it. Except for once a few years ago I was not able to pick up my wifi signal. Called customer support, the rep tried to fix the problem over the phone with me but couldn't (I was on the phone for a really looooong time). He said something needed to be replaced (sorry I'm not very technical). In the end he said he was going to send a prepaid shipping carton for me to send it back to HP and they would fix it. IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY AT THE TIME! I got the carton sent it to HP and received it back good as new within a week...no charge. I thought that was pretty good customer service.

CompMom, HP has changed a lot in 5 years especially since it moved customer services, sale and etc overseas.

I've written off HP and agree that they are "Hopelessly Pathetic". Their newer products are not very reliable and their customer service is terrible. I had two very poor warranty experiences in the past 5 years, and now involved with the NVIDIA Settlement that HP has as much responsibility for as NVIDIA due to their poor engineering. Check out this thread if you haven't already done so. LINK
The two occasions that I needed to use my extended warranty it took several weeks of arguing before HP finally acknowledged that my notebooks were still under warranty. So, long story short, it was good that I had extended warranty in place because I needed it, but a really crappy customer experience using the warranty. -
I found this blog and this is exactly what HP did to me. TWICE.

So I take it you won't be purchasing an HP?
