Looking for a new laptop and this appears to fit the bill, however, not keen on the sales patter so would prefer independant opinion from anyone on this forum please.

Spec says it has AMD Athlon x2 Dual core Processor QL62. Is this a decent processor compared to the Intel Pentium Dual core?

Any independant reviews more than welcome.

    Thanks

Depends on what you're using it for really. Frankly most of the intel offerings mhz for mhz are faster, but the Athlon is more than adequate for most people, and generally they're cheaper. If you give us some idea of what you expect to do with the laptop we can probably give you a better idea if the QL62 will suit your needs or not.

The AMD is fine for what you want. Lots of RAM and a good amount of cache is more important than speed. Remember that the Pentium Dual Core is not the same as the Core Duo.

See http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=166906 if you want another opinion on processors.

Well, they do run a bit warmer than comparable Intel mobile cpu's but the operating temps are still within the limits. If you want a cooler running/quieter system, HP might not be the best option. Typically, HP's tend to have the fans running more often compared to other brands but ofcourse the laptops are usually thinner than most consumer notebooks.

    Hi Guys,

I'm looking into buying a reasonably priced laptop for music, video and photo storage but can also offer me minimalistic gaming useage. I'm a big fan of strategy games and footy manager sims. Have seen the HP G60-214EM and the HP DV5-1211.

Just wondering which people would independently advise to be the best for what I'm looking for?

I'm not big on jargon and component talk so any advice would be highly appreciated.

Graphics card wise the 1st one comes with a Nvidia Geforce 8200 and the 2nd with a ATi Radeon HD 3450.....

    HELP!

If the price difference between the two isnt too large, I would pick the dv5-1211. The Hd3450 is much better performing graphics card compared to the Geforce 8200. Although either of these cards should meet your gaming needs. rest of the specifications seem to be the same or similar. The G60 has a 16:9 ratio screen compared to the 16:10 for the dv5. The dv5 IMO looks to be the better deal but again depends on the price.

Thanks for the advice. I had seen some bad reviews regarding the 3450 graphics card so wasn't sure. Price wise I think your looking at aroudn £120 difference.

That 1277mb is the maximum amount of shared memory it can use, it has no dedicated ram. I didn't look up your previous choices but graphics wise HD3450>GMA 4500>8200GO (though the last two are very close together while the HD3450 is head and shoulders above both of them)

The HD3450 is much better than either of those two integrated graphics cards. The HD3450 is a mid range card and although it isn't the best option when compared to other faster cards available. It is definitely a much better option than any IGPlike the GMA4500 or 8200M. The G70 should run a bit cooler & CPU performance would be better than the AMD machines. Graphics performance should be similar to the G60 but slower than the dv5.

Hi everybody,, i m new to this forum and found it when i got a problem with my new laptop HP DV5 1211. I bought this laptop few days ago and tomorrow i ll go back to PC world and make a refund. The laptop spec is same like above as people said AMD athlon x2 cpu and 512 mb dedicated ATi graphic which seems fantasic. The problem began when i tried to play Counter Strike online. It stopped running after playing for 5 mins or less. I tried to solve the problem by unstalling and restalling counter strike, trying to find all drivers update and trying to update DirectX as well. Sometime the game stopped running and sometime the computer hanged completely. Sometime, i can restart the computer by pressing ctl+alt+del but sometime, i have to hold the power buttom to reset. Counter strike is an old game which doesn't need much requirement and even my old computer Alienware 5600, intel centrino 1.6hz with 2mb cache, 2 g ram, 256 nvdia 5000 series can handle smoothly. I know Alienware is meant to b a gaming pc but the HP with this spec should b able to handle a small game like the old counter strike. I don't know where the problem came from Cpu or graphic card or wireless adaptor. But i don't think it's the wireless adaptor. Either Cpu or graphic card can't handle it. There's no heat problem the computer and counter strike is the first program that i installed since i bought the computer(apart from preinstalled software). Apart from this problem, the computer is beautifully design, featured with bluetooth and remote control. Nice computer but for my needs i don't like it. Anybody if u know where the problem came from pls let me know. Thx.
