son's computer used at college. At the first sign of trouble, when powering up the computer, we got a strange looking herringbone pattern on the screen. Now, the computer is completely dead, will not power up at all and none of the 3 beacon lights on front of casing will light (battery charge, etc).
My son admitted that he was sitting on an ottoman in a carpeted room and went to slide the computer into his back pack but missed the pocket and the computer hit the floor edge wise (and closed). He said the drop was less than a foot, but alas the problems started at this point. I have read there have been problems with the Nivivea (sp) graphics card and with door hinge switches (logical). I was wondering if a power supply could also be at fault. BTW, is there any kind of reset button on the unit? Any troubleshooting suggestions would be welcomed. Thanks in advance. ReBell in Ms

Sounds like screen suffered something like this first:
broken lcd screen - Google-haku
Do those look familiar? Replacing the LCD panel itself isn't too expensive but the other issue, computer not booting can be more costly. It could be something like power cord plug broken at fall, thus laptop would first drain the battery and then it wouldn't boot. Motherboard itself might also be broken, that costs a lot more to fix (usually not worth the price).
Simplest reset is to remove battery for a while. I don't think it would help :/ -
First - thank you for your prompt reply.
The screen isn't damaged. The herringbone pattern was diplayed on the screen. I have had several broken LCD's and this isn't the case. I am using a generic power cord bought off ebay and noticed it isn't warm. His twin brother has an HP. Will just have to wait until he gets home. Someone did mention some sort of door switch. What do you know about this switch? Thank you!!
