This is my first post and visit to this wonderful site :) Hopefully someone can help me with my problem. I have a hp laptop G60-549DX and a couple months ago I started it up and the screen stays black, I can hear noises coming from inside of it but no screen. I took it to a guy that advertised on craigslist for a free diagnosis and he said the motherboard is out. I saw a few people on the hp website forum saying they have had the same problem. What do i need to do to get this fixed? I have owned the laptop for about 2 years. I have complained to the BBB but no response yet. Thanks

If it's a motherboard failure ,it's probably not worth fixing.

Displays, and the easily removable components like the hard drive are the only cost effective repairs worth doing on this.

Complaining to the BBB won't get it fixed after 2 years of ownership
These things happen all the time

For example I bought a 23" NEC monitor a few years back.
It came with a standard 1 year warranty ,(I did not pay for extended)
It lasted for 13 months before a manufacturing defect appeared! (a vertical line of dead pixels).

Did you have the laptop connected to another monitor? If so then hook it back to the external monitor and change the display settings. If not try an external monitor and see if it will display a picture you may can just make your laptop into a desktop.

not being funny, but try pressing fn+F4 a few times.

you could also have a failed backlight (hence the screen being black) or a host of other things.

i wouldn't put it as motherboard by just looking at it, because there are other things to check first, like vga out to another monitor, shining a torch onto the screen to see if you can see the windows logo (because the backlight has died) just a few examples.
