    Hi,

Has anyone got an HP G70120EM? It looks like a PC World/Currys only machine but might be called something else elsewhere.

I'd like to know what ports are on the machine especially HDMI as it has a Blu-ray drive. I do plan to get to Currys soon but thought someone might help me in the meantime.

Also what's it like as a machine? Would you recommend it?

    Cheers

I bought one from PC World 2 months ago. Generally it's been very good. However, last week I excitedly bought my first blu-ray disc from Amazon (Chocolate,2008,Thai martial arts film), updated HP's QuickPlay to the latest version 3.7, ensured Vista was completed patched (via Automatic Updates), ensured all hardware drivers were up-to-date via HP Update, but was disappointed to find that it just doesn't play. No message given, it says "Loading..." for a few seconds then reverts to "Insert a DVD or press the play button...". I haven't even tried connecting it to my HD Ready TV yet (yes, it has an HDMI-out connection).

I've also tried Cyberlink PowerDVD Ultra v9, which can play blu-ray discs too including the latest blu-ray features such as BD-Live, but Chocolate still doesn't play and PowerDVD just gives the error "Unsupported format".

Oh, and then I discover that in the box it came in is a one-page separate disclaimer from HP about blu-ray discs, which says :

"Because blu-ray is a new format incorporating new technologies, certain discs, digital connections, compatability, and/or performance issues may arise that do not constitute defects in the product. HP does not guarantee flawless playback on all systems."

Some searching on the forums on HP's website reveals a number of other people seemingly unable to play blu-rays on their HP machines. It seems to me like HP threw blu-ray players into their computers without really making sure they all actually worked properly, and are trying to cover their backs with a legal disclaimer (which you only get to read AFTER you've bought it of course).

I don't think it's the particular disc's fault - Chocolate was released last year long before this laptop was - suspicion lies with HP, the BD-ROM drive and it's firmware, but until HP can provide new firmware it seems I'm stuck with a blu-ray player that can't actually play a standard blu-ray disc. I've yet to suffer the torment of HP Support to try to confirm all this, but from what I've read on the forums they aren't much use.

Basically, I'm not too happy about it and might not have bought this model if I had been told in the shop that there are issues with HP blu-ray drives and it might not actually work.
