I just purchased this configuration today from Staples and was looking to get other owners' impressions of their HP G72s:
Intel® Core i3-370M Processor (2.40GHz)
4GB installed memory
500GB hard drive
SuperMulti 8X DVDñR/RW with Double Layer Support
17.3" diagonal High Definition+ HP BrightView LED Display (1600 x 900)
Textured HP Imprint finish with the prism design in biscotti
HP Webcam with integrated microphone
Wireless LAN 802.11b/g/n WLAN
5-in-1 integrated Digital Media Reader
Full-size keyboard with integrated numeric keypad
6-Cell 47WHr Lithium-Ion Battery
Dimensions 16.22" (W) x 10.59" (D) x 1.27" (min H)/1.47" (max H) (6.6lbs)
Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64-bit
1 year warranty
The system was on sale for $549.98 after the in-store discounts and $50 mail-in rebate. I also took advantage of their recycling promotion and gave them an old clunker of a laptop and got an additional $100 off in the store for a final price of $449.48.
I'm looking forward to getting it out of the box and trying it out.
Please feel free to submit your HP G72 impressions and questions to this thread.

I have a G62, same specs, just a smaller screen, so far so good, working out great for me.
I did have a problem registering my purchase date with HP, so my warranty showed up correctly on the HP website, it took 3 weeks and in the end they gave me a 2 year care pack warranty, with accidental damage coverage, for my troubles, trust me I earned it.
Words of advice:
Register your purchase with HP soon, FAX it for best results 1 541 715 5522
Include in the FAX the following info:
A copy of your receipt (Scan it)

.
Remove the Norton NIS 2010 software, it is causing problems with the touchpad and webcam on some models. It gave my touchpad problems. I use Microsoft Security Essentials in place of it.
Do not install the Synaptics touchpad driver update offered by HP update, its buggy. (sp49522.exe v15.0.18.0.a)

Thanks for the great suggestions! I've set up the computer but have barely used it so far. Maybe this weekend....

KooL -
KooL, you should be able to use those applications on this PC, but I'm not an expert on the different CAD programs and how much they tax system resources. Here's a detailed review on the G72 for a similar configuration to the one that I have: HP G72-250us Review & Rating | PCMag.com
Maybe you can get some detailed info from that.
I use my PC primarily for websurfing and basic business productivity work...
Hope that helps. -
The bad news for me is that it's a Christmas present from my wife and I promised I wouldn't use it until then. Oh well, I guess I'll have to wait. -

There was a buggy driver update for the synaptics touchpad that causes this, if you updated it, roll it back to the original driver.
If it shows up in HP update again tell it to ignore this update. -

A friend of mine just bought a G72, I don't remember what variant. I ordered a keyboard skin for her today, I hope the keyboards are identical across all variants. Anyone know?

I've ordered a HP G72-110SA which doesn't come with bluetooth, and was wondering which bluetooth module this model will take?
Any information appreciated.
Thanks
