I've bought myself a new hitachi 7200 100 GB sata hard drive for my nc8430 and when I installed HP mobile data protection system it says that disk isn't supported and the protection is disabled!!?? How's that possible? Is there any fix?

Alright im 98% sure that I uninstalled that mobile protection dealie. I killed off most of those extras HP included.

My best guess is its a SMART tool to analyze the smart data and diagnostics on the hard drive. They are probably looking for brand specific information like for example, hitachi head float distance! (I made that up) but its probably not giving all the info it needs to run.

I really doubt it will do anything important at all though, as far as I know, HPs don't come with shock protection and stuff (you know like the accelerometers of apples and thinkpads that turn off the hard drive if its falling)

Oh the fact that you have a business class notebook totally slipped my mind!

It does seem rather strange for it to be incompatible, do you know the brand of your original hard drive? I think this is almost hardware specific enough for you to justify an email to Hitachi about it.

(Seems odd, Hitachi = IBM travelstar, Thinkpads = built in shock protection too)

HP's business notebooks do come with shock protection. It has a 3D accelerometer exactly like those found on Thinkpads, hence the HP Mobile Data Protection System. The only thing I can think of is that the accelerometer has been somehow disconnected when you swap the hard disk. Did you reinstall Windows after installing the hard disk or did you simply reimage the drive from your old disk. If you cloned the previous drive, it could be because the BIOS/software is looking for the ID from the old disk and is unable to match it with the one on the new disk, so it simply disables it.
I'm just giving ideas because I've never heard of this problem before.

No it was fresh install on empty drive. If fact me and my girlfriend have same laptops and we bought same disk drives, Hitachi Travelstar 7k100 Sata, I installed new harddrives and installed winxp. After I installed all the drivers I installed also Hp 3d mobile data protection system software - and it doesn't work - the drive isn't supported. This is very strange cause on my previous laptop - Thinkpad r51 - I also bought a new drive for it and the data protection system worked as it should...
I really don't know what to do...

what's even more funnier is that my original hard drive in nc8430 was Hitachi Travelstar 5k100, same drive but at 5400 rpm...

    Works fine with my laptop.
Is SATA enabled in your BIOS?
Is the disk detected as a SATA drive in the device manager?

4 questions (to help those in the future "searching")

1: What was the part number of the Hitachi 100 gig hd-any kind of id strings you may have.
2: Bios revison of your machine
3: Model number (i.e nx6325 true model number is RB526UT#ABA as a example)
4: Date of mfg- date of purchase. (i.e bought, mfg yesterday, or in 1986) ;)

PS: If you could, please cross post your data in that link I linked to above: http://www.notebookforums.com/thread164119.html

Again, so the info may help someone else later on....

http://www.notebookforums.com/thread164119.html - exactly my problem, but I don't agree with this observation: "drive seems to access a lot more frequently", it's working as it should and as frequently as my original hard drive that came with nc8430.
New drive works much faster and you can see that everywhere. It defenitely is the most wise upgrade if you're looking for extra speed. It's not that noisier either. The only problem is that system protection and now I think it's definitely software related, cause latest HP 3d mobile data protection system was released march 2006 and I guess those lazy HP software developers aren't testing new hard drives with it and think there's nothing to fix... Indeed, it's easier to say to look for compatibilty of new parts with some s.h.i.t.y. hp diagnostics software rather to make them compatible via easy software updates, suckers.
Thinkpads disk protection system is working fine with all the drives out there and I just can't get it why Hp's couldn't do the same.

    It is Seagate 7200.

My computer-->Properties-->Device manager-->look and expand the IDE/ATA controller section.

So you have both an Ultra ATA and a SATA driver there. Correct?

Exactly the same controllers at device manager. I assume we've got the same version too of HP Data protection system (3.00 A6)
The only difference is the drive then.
I don't know if you can try with Hitachis acoustic management utilities to see if it will make a difference.
