    Hey,
I am talking about the pack that's in between the laptop plug and the sock plug. I'm sitting about a foot away from it and I can hear a little buzzing, plus it is hot to touch (I can touch it for a few seconds though). Is this normal?

I had that problem too before w/ my dv9429us.

If you're still under warranty, call HP and ask firmly but nicely for them to send you a new AC adapter.

A new one arrived within two days.

Now I have both but still use the "defective" one w/ the buzzing and it still works after 2 years.

If it's hot, use the phrase "fire hazard" whle making your report. Should make them sit up and listen. :D

Oh you mean the AC adaptor aka power brick. Yes it is normal for it to buzz a little, and yes some do get hot to the touch. Unless the plastic shows signs of melting there isn't any fire risk.

The buzzing is caused by poorly wound coils - they shouldn't be like that, but they do not pose any hazard. Lately i've seen everything from buzzing TVs to buzzing graphics cards, guess they just wind wires in a lousy way nowadays. If the noise is bugging you you should ask HP for a replacement, but my guess is that the new one is going to buzz as well. The power bricks of both my laptops buzz slightly... The one that came with the DV5 also runs pretty hot. The DV9700's power brick only gets a little warm.
