Hi, does anyone know how to disable the HP on-screen volume display that comes up when the volume is adjusted? It keeps causing games to minimise and/or crash when I use it.
I've search lots of threads, some of which suggest I should disable the "HP Quicktouch On Screen Display" in the Start-up menu in system configurations, however, this item doesn't appear in my list.
Any ideas?

I agree, it's extremely annoying. If you can't find a solution quickly, make sure you send HP an email through their tech support form. If enough people complain they'll do something about it.
-
I have the same issue but reverse. I would like to have it on, I do see the option in my startup menu, however nothing has ever displayed.
I tried contacting HP about this issue, and they said it never works on the x64 operating system........... -
How strange, I'm running vista 64 premium and it's definitely working (although I wish it wasn't!) - do you have an HDX or one of the other Pavillions?
I've sent HP an email, I'll post their reply when I hear back. -
Are you running 64 bit? -
Yep, 64-bit vista home premium.
-
Right, just got the following answer from HP...
"At this time, we are not aware of how to turn off the on-screen volume."
No help there then, I guess I'll just just have learn to live with it. -
lol
humm a true mystery!! -
Uninstall any quick touch button software then reinstall it from their website. i have a dv7 with windows home premium 64 bit fresh install and i used all of the drivers from their website and i dont have that volume thing.

I also have an HDX 16 that is giving me hell! About a month after I got my laptop the volume control started going crazy. Sometimes I won't even be touching my laptop and it starts going crazy, going up and down in volume with that annoying screen that shows its changing volume and the annoying sound that goes with it. I have been searching all over my computer for the software or program to control the touch controls and I cannot find anything. I can't fin anything with the word "quick touch", only quick play and thats just for dvds, music, and pics. How can I disable the whole quick touch controls? I would expect that paying over $2000 for a customized laptop you wouldn't have problems like this. Any help?

you can end the process in task manager. its called "HPKBDAPP.exe". its description reads "hp quick touch on screen display" if your not confident about ending random tasks.
you can prevent it running on startup by doing msconfig and then disabling "hp quicktouch on screen display" in the startup tab. this still allows you to use the buttons as normal, but without the pain in the message popping up.
enjoy! -
Man, I know it must seem like I'm not looking in the right place but I do not have that process in my task manager nor in msconfig. Like I said, I cannot find anything on my computer that says anything about quicktouch, yet I have quicktouch buttons!! I guess I'll have to sit on the phone with HP...again...for yet another problem. Thanks for the suggestions though

strange. what operating system?

I don't know if the HP HDX 16 on-screen volume works the same as on the Pavilions, DV-5, DV-7, etc. but this works on them:
Disable QuickTouch On Screen Volume Display
To disable the on line Volume Display causing a slow down / freezing issue without uninstalling any software: (Itβs also easily reversable)
1. Click the Vista start icon, bottom left.
2. Type RUN in the Start Search box, ENTER.
3. Type MSCONFIG in the OPEN: area, Click OK.
4. Click on Continue if asked.
5. Select the StartUp Tab in the System Configuration menu.
6. Remove the Checkmark from the HP Quicktouch On Screen Display item.
7. Click on OK and Restart if required.
Reverse above procedure to restore to original if desired -
My HDX just arrived today. You absolutely can disable the on screen volume as mine is gone now. I did quite a few changes at once so I'm not exactly positive which one did it, but I think it stopped when I removed HP Adviser from my installed programs. You could try disabling it from the Startup menu in Msconfig first. I also have Hp MediaSmart disabled from Startup. The volume and mute button still function but not the treble/bass. As well, the mute button is always orange, but like I said, it still functions. HTH
-
Weird, my mute button is blue and matches everything else ~_~ I also deleted the mediasmart stuff and treble/bass no longer work, but mute, wifi, volume, and pause/play/stop all work. Mute doesn't change orange when muted, but wifi does.
I believe the bass control is the source of buzzy audio, and was the first thing I fixed when I got my laptop. I use realtek HD instead and it sounds pretty good for laptop speakers. Use software EQ if you want to tweak those things. -
I was thinking about the mute button color difference. This occurred to me, when I disabled mediasmart I had mute on. Maybe that is why mine is orange. I'll play around with this some more to be sure.

Roosta, my op sytem is 64bit Vista, looks like I have the exact same config as anothergeek but according to lowprofile there is another way to disable it, but I know for sure I do not have anything in msconfig that says anything about quicktouch. I guess I will to remove HP Advisor and see what happens

The soft buttons on this laptop are a joke. The volume is practically unusable. I try to ramp up and it does nothing. Then I remove my finger and it ramps uncontrollably, all the way to max (or min). Mute almost never responds. The on-screen volume display is obtrusive and causes all sorts of problems. I can't believe this laptop made it all the way past Q/A to become their semi "high end / flagship" laptop. I sincerely regret buying this piece of CRAP. My Sony VAIO had hard buttons that worked fine. I'm going back to Sony the next time I buy high end.
Oh...and one more thing...I really love the way the keyboard is unsupported in the area between the QWERTY keyboard and the numeric keypad. Gives me great confidence that this laptop will last forever when the keyboard sinks down almost every time I press a key. -
My sentiments, exactly! I have just bought my HDX 16 today and I have EXACTLY the same problem!! I hope somebody can help me! -
