but first i need some help. i decided against getting the Asus m50vm-b1 for few reasons and decided to go with HP HDX 16t Premium series. i love the wide screen and better specs.

I wanted the DV5T but the 16t is just that but much much better.

I tried looking online at what memory it takes and couldn't find anything BUT i am pretty sure its DDR2-800, they have ddr2 on their page but not the speed but i would assume its the same as DV5T which takes DDR2-800.

can someone help me determine the exact memory it takes?

also when it comes to swapping HHD's, the 7200 RPM is just as big in size as the 5400rpm right, just a matter of plugging it in and i am good to go correct?

if you guys can help me out with the above i would appreciate it!

if it is DDR2, it's very unlikely it's 800mhz RAM, because the Santa Rosa motherboard only supports speeds up to 667mhz. i might be wrong though, i'm no HP expert.

regarding the hard drives, just make sure they're of the 2.5" variety, then they'll fit in (virtually) every laptop.

HP had long updated their Pavilion models to Montevina platforms much before others had done it. So my guess is minimum it should have 800MHz memory or 1066 MHz.

i dont think you are right...

almost every HP laptop now comes with DDR2-800

    the DV5T comes with that, as in DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)....

they are practically the same books

and its it not a santa rosa board, its a montevina platform which supports the Core 2's p8400, p8600, p9400, p9600

i could be wrong, can someone confirm?

It runs at DDR2 800 MHz. And harddrive just has to be 2.5" to fit in most laptops. It is true it is the montevina platform.

    That's not always true.
Most laptops accept "only" 9,5mm height drives. It is true that almost every 2,5" HDD has the standard 9,5mm height but there are also some drives that are 12,5mm height.
    Example: Hitachi 500GB 5400rpm

If you want a 500GB drive just buy it from Western Digital or Samsung. These are standard height.
I think that only the Asus M50 and M70 series accept the Hitachi 12,5mm height drives.
