Yes, it passes the SPDIF through HDMI if the HD audio is coming from the DVD drive. Otherwise, if it's a file off the harddrive, it passes it through the audio hardware. But in all cases, there's no processing of the digital signal before it's passed to the SPDIF output of the HDMI
And the two headphone jacks are analog stereo only. No SPDIF.

Hrm, if it indeed is capable of doing SPDIF passthrough from the DVD-Drive then it should be able to do it with the correct codecs too.

I use ffdshow to decode the audio, and I can send audio through the SPDIF out both with the software processing it and not processing it at all.

Thanks for the reply, any recommendations for such an expresscard? Also any idea if that card will work with HP's QuickPlay or only through windows...

Sorry, actually they would be USB devices. Blackmagic makes a USB component video capture device.

    http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/videorecorder/

Card wouldn't work with QuickPlay though.

    Yo Bpat,

Go into your control panel, click hardware and sound and I think then the mike tab. There should be two types of mikes. Click the 'other one'. (I'm not at my HDX now) Because by default the ones on the sides of the webcam are turned off. Try it.

I hope you understand what i"m trying to tell ya.

    Hey guys,

First of all, I have mixed feelings about some of you being so elaborate on here because I have just finished reading all the posts and the feeling of my eyes is similar of the time that my curiosity overcame my other senses and I could no longer resist my urges to find out how it would be to observe the sun through binoculars. Thank you all though, it has been emotional, I've observed happiness as well as the awesome image of Asuhoru on many occasions, but unfortunately I have seen sadness as well, I'm sorry to see that a number of you have been fondled during this epic journey by the one who all of this possible in the first place, HP.

My situation, I'm living in China at the moment and I'm planning to purchase this apparatus in the near futre. I'm planning to go to HK to get it there for a variety of reasons. I'll have the advantage of seeing this machine before I present the pesos. However, I can only stay in HK for only one day. Due to visa issues it will be difficult for me to return to the store to express my love to the salespeople if something does not function properly. As far as I know this the only one that is offered here, no optional configurations I think.

    HDX9304TX
    Processor : Intel Core2 Duo T9300 (2.5G)
Operations System : Microsoft Window Vista Home Premium
    Chipset : PM965
    Hard Disk : 500GB(2x250)
Hard Disk Drive Speed : 5400rpm
    L2 CACHE Memory : 6MB
    Memory : 3G (1x2G+1x1G)
Optical Drive : BluRay ROM with Super Multi DVD+/-R/RW DL
Display Screen Size : 20.1" WUXGA High Definition Ultra BV
    Display Screen Resolution (dpi ) : 1920 x 1200
Display Card : NVIDIA GeForece 8800M GTS

My question, I have burned a DVD or two, downloaded some stuff, etc., but I have never owned a laptop before and my knowledge is very limited (the time it took me to register successfully to this site would illustrate this). Can someone please give me some advice on what to do in the store? I have read about quite a few problems like dead pixels, graphic cards that are not recognized and so on. I would love to get a heads up on what I can and should check before I'll provide one of those eager salesmen with a bonus? I've read something of not taking this puppy on a plane, I guess out of practical reasons? I would like to bring it with me when I go back home. Sorry if my English isn't well, I'm Dutch. I hope someone is bored enough to provide me with some information. Thanks in advance.

    Regards,

    Matthias

I'll explain in dutch for you.

If you're buying it in a store, Mattie, just open it up and test it before you buy it. From what I've been reading a lot of the problems we've had in the beginning seemed to have been ironed out. Start the box up, check for dead pixels. If they're any, try another one etc. Then, spend the time and test the graphics, sound, webcam etc. You WILL be paying the big bucks like we all did so you better make sure you're getting what you're paying for.

You said you read some of our problems here in this thread- all of them are fixable. My HDX is running great and I'm extremely pleased with the behemoth. Its just so damn heavy, I leave it at work.

And nothings wrong with taking it on the plane. Just in all practical sense, its just that damn big. And heavy. If you're taking it home, why not. But it will become a pain in the asuhoru if you lug it back and forth to work, school etc.

You'll enjoy it, brother. If you do have problems, come to our little home in this thread. Just remember the return policy if you come across a big non-fixin' problem like one of us did (i forget his name). But i'm sure all of the HDX Collective will agree it is one fine machine.

    Aloha,
    Asuhoru

PS.. Your english is fine except for the 'awesome image of Asuhoru'. :D

Hi, i have a problem HP can't, or at least doesnt wanna seem to fix. I've had my HDX9200 for about 3 months. It has the 8800 nvidia card, fingerreader and web cam. It came with the recovery partition and recommended i make recovery disks which were the exact same as the partition. I had CA anti-virus and got some sort of virus it didnt detect. It ran bad and i tried vundo, ect to get rid of it. I finally went for a recovery from the partition and it still had the virus. Typically recovery files are zipped and viruses cant get in but this apparently did. So i tried the recovery disks i made and they say they arent for my computer, though i tried them when i first made them to make sure they did. My last resort was the reinstall disks that came with the laptop. This deleted everything(recovery partition and all) and set it to a 32 gig hd with the rest unallocated. The fingerprint reader wont work and it freezes immediatly and incrimentally from the first boot up after the reinstallation. Ive created an empty 13 gig recovery partition in an attempt to fool the disks i made to work but to no avail. Basically can anyone use acronis/ghost to send me a copy of their recovery partition of the same hardware? It holds no info on the pc or windows serial number as thats stored on the bios. I think if i can get that on the recovery partition, i can get teh f11 store to work. AOL and various other IM's have file transfers to send it. In return i have serials for office 2003, xp pro, server 2003 ect that are valid i can give you as a form of trade. Thanks. My yahoo is latchjohnson. Send me a message if you can help, id really appreciate it.

    Hello =)

Do you think it's worth doing a fresh install of Vista x64 on my HDX9250EA... currently it has Vista x32.

Would I see a performance increase? Decrease? More stable?

Are the Vista x64 drivers available?

Would my current key for Vista work still?

    Thanks =)

The last model listed at HP is HDX9290LA Notebook PC. If you upgrade to another vista, you need a serial for that vista as well. If it only didnt work that way huh. Its clean and doesnt effect any software on it, though some might not work with the 64 bit versions. Anyways, i'll try any recovery partition, cant hurt as its only software.

sb123. i run under vista 64 on the exact same model as you, it runs about 20% quicker in general and i can use the full 4gb of ram. stability is comparable to x32.

The x64 vista drivers are fine from the hp site, except i'd recommend going to laptopvideo2go.com to pick up some nicer nvidia drivers

    No you key wouldn't work....

I can give you an Acronis v11 backup of the recovery disk portion. I just made it in fact. I have same hardware except am using Vista Home Premium x64. Is yours 64 bit also? I try to send it along, don't know if my ISP (Comcast Cable) will let me. Is this what you want? David

Thanks DSGERALD but x64 wont work with mine as i dont have a x64 key. It will recognise it when it reads the one i have. Actually HP after 4 times contacting them, sent me a box to have it sent in. Anyone who doesnt back up your hard drive to an external might wanna. The install cds that come with it cause terrible freezing right from the frorst boot up. I couldnt even listen to music on it. Again, thanks dsgerald.

RE: HDX 7200RPM Hard Drive Update
We all know too well that there was only one 7200 RPM hard drive configuration option for the HDX - the 240GB 7200RPM SATA Dual Hard Drive (120GB x 2) - up until now, that is.
After much awaited time, the HDX, today (May 14, 2008), may be configured with one of the following 7200 RPM hard drive options:
    240GB 7200RPM SATA Dual Hard Drive (120GB x 2) + $35 upgrade
    320GB 7200RPM SATA Dual Hard Drive (160GB x 2) + $150 upgrade
    And the much awaited 400GB 7200RPM SATA Dual Hard Drive (200GB x 2) + $275 upgrade

RE: OS and Recovery Media Disks Update
For a long time, HDX’s were rolling out to customers without Operating System and Recovery Media disks.
With the HDX, today (May 14, 2008), for an additional well-spent $19 buyers have a choice of OS and Recovery Media disk(s) as follows:
System Recovery DVD with Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit) + $19
System Recovery DVD with Genuine Windows Vista Ultimate (64-bit) + $19
Note: It is highly recommended that the appropriate OS and Recovery Media disk is checked at the time of ordering.

    RE: Blu Ray Writer (Hopefuls)
Many of us continue awaiting the release of a backward compatible Blu Ray Writer that is similar to the Blu-ray writer / HD DVD player & Lightscribe SuperMulti DVD burner currently available on HP’s desktop PC d5000t Series. That optical drive features: Up to 50GB storage capacity*, Serial ATA interface, enabling recording, rewriting, and playback of HD video, as well as storing large amounts of data. Compatible with BD** / HD DVD** / DVD / CD formats: BD playback & recording, HD DVD playback, DVD playback & recording, CD playback & recording. FOOTNOTES: *on dual layer BD-R / BD-RE media.
Hopefully, we won’t have to wait much longer for a similar option on the HDX. In hindsight, the release of Montevina is coming up very soon. And in no more than 2 months, the (2nd generation) HDX should have it too. Many suspect that the release of the "2nd generation" HDX will then have a similar Blu Ray Writer option. It may be well worthwhile waiting for it.

    RE: Sound Blaster (Hopefuls)
We can only hope that the 2nd generation HDX will offer Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio or Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer as sound card options.

This posting relates to the Intel Centrino2 Core2 Mobile Extreme X9100 with its 3.06 GHz Processor and 1066 FSB, its release date, and the timely likelyhood of its inclusion as an option on the HDX:

FUD Zilla heard Intel will release a 3.06GHz mobile processor on June 3rd. This 45nm Core2 Extreme processor is called X9100, it will use the 1066MHz FSB and will have 6MB L2 cache.
Intel promises 44W Thermal Design Power (TDP) and the 35x35mm CPU fits in socket P. The full name of the CPU is Core2 Extreme X9100 and with 3.06GHz it definitely is the fastest dual-core for notebooks. Some crazy notebook manufacturers might even overclock it further, but 3GHz is quite enough for notebooks.
    Reference: http://www.dvhardware.net/article27066.html

Engadget states that Intel is releasing 15 Montevina CPUs in May'08 including the Centrino2 Core2 Extreme X9100:
    http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/15/intel-releasing-15-montevina-cpus-in-may/

CNET NEWS: Intel will roll out its first wave of mainstream 45-nanometer "Montevina" Centrino 2 mobile processors by June then follow this up in September with additional chips including the first quad-core mobile processor.

HP's HDX gaming laptop would be a candidate for the mobile quad-core chip

Montevina - which Intel recently branded Centrino 2 - will offer the option of integrated Wi-Fi and WiMax wireless technologies. The platform will also have a new Cantiga chipset with better integrated graphics, among other features.

u can do two things too solve this; either do a system recovery OR shut down the computer, unplug the adapter, take out the battery, and press the POWER button for abt 45 seconds, THEN reinsert the batter and all and start the computer, they should be working now :)

Another thing to do right out of the box is not to install the 'security' update for the Quicklaunch buttons. It is known that if you DO install it, it will disable some or most of the quicklaunch buttons. Its been 6 months and the promised HP fix to reenable them hasn't arrived yet.

    Yeah, have installed it.

    Personally, haven't noticed a change.

But if it does switch the fans on all the time, and I do not hear a sound increase then it must be very good =)

    Has anyone else tried it?

I've updated to this and I have problems...

When I shut the PC down, the screen goes off but the lights remain lit and there is a small sound. Approx 5 to 10 mins later the PC reboots.

The only way to swutch the pc off is to press the POWER button for 5 seconds.

hii guys!! i'm basically from india and working in dubai, UAE these days. In india this model is not available yet and unfortunately unlike the American market, HP do not allow you to customize the laptop here in the UAE.

now the model which is available in UAE stores doesn't have Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN in it and also the 1920x1200 True HD 1080p resolution screen! The other problem is that india and UAE supports DVB-T TV Tuners so i cant even order from US based online shops because they provide ATSC TV Tuner which wont work here.

i also want to customize because i dont want to pay unnecessarily for more RAM, HDD Space and extra powerful processor and i can buy the laptop which fits into my budget.

Can someone help me with this problem... is there any other online shop where i can customize the laptop and get the DVB-T TV Tuner too.

    Umar,

I sent you a PM addressing this.

It is typical for this type of screen to generate this kind of heat. If you read reviews, it is known that the bottom of the screen AND under the place where your left palm rests- theres some warmth.

If it becomes too hot to touch or your screen shuts off for no reason, then its a problem.

    Aloha

When I get a chance, I'll post a pic using a THermal imaging camera so you can see where it gets hot or 'warm'. :)

I'm not going to do this update. I"m reading too many people getting problems by doing it.

Well, I read this message board twice and then I went over the waterfall last week. I got a refurb HP HDX, 2.8, 4GB, Blu-Ray, Ultimate 64, the hi-res screen (with no bad pixels), and the ATI video board (my only sacrifice but the price was right). All is well after a few learning experiences. First, all the software on the box was out of date and the fingerprint software was missing, so I went to the HP site and did all the driver upgrades. All went OK except for my Windows Media Center, which I botched up myself and could not fix. I recommend using this HP driver upgrade logic as a fix if you are having problems. However, if you do all this and still have a problem, I recommend you order or utilize the recovery disks (which I had to do) as I wanted my box to work perfectly. I did the BIOS upgrade before I ran the recovery to ensure I was getting the latest chip logic. Ensure you wait for the BIOS upgrade to finish... you don't get much in the message department until it's done. It just sits there for 10 minutes or so and appears as if the machine is dead. Patience here, wait for the machine to come back to life. The recovery disks are sensitive also. All you do as the restorer is put disk one in the drive, boot, answer a few questions and off it goes. A half hour later, you put in disk two, then in another half hour is asks if you have any more disks, and if not, hit cancel button. At this point, do not touch the machine for about 4 hours. If you do, like I did, you might get a data exception error, and get to start over again, losing 3 hours. It took about 6 hours to get the machine back to generic with the recovery, windows update, HP update, and anit-virus update. I ran the update in the middle of the night, and my only warning is the machine boots many times, and it keeps giving you those windows beeping songs at a loud volume, which you can set lower, but when it reboots, it goes back to a high default volume... so forget seting the sound level, just close the door. My results are "the machine is now perfect." The fan on my 2.8GHz runs on low speed when at idle and the more the chip is processing, the faster the fan runs. So, I can listen to the fan and estimate how much CPU is being utilized. In conclusion, when your machine gets totally illogical, it's time for a re-install to clean out all the garbage and keep your fingers off the mouse and keyboard after you have finished loading the restore disks until you get prompted for your region, time zone, etc. After I got the machine perfect, I then ran the HP recovery disk creation logic that burned 3 DVD disks. Since I have not utilzied those disks customized for my box yet, I can not validate here if they work as well as the factory restore disks. The HP HDX is great computer and I highly recommend it. Good luck; you might have to be brave to do the above but it cleaned up my OS issues. My other comment is the Ultimate 64 OS is a much nicer OS than the Home Premium 32 I have on my home built PC. Hope this helps someone out there to learn from my experience.

    Hi Maarten (of Hoi Maarten)

Where did you get this one. I'm trying to find this one or the 9270EG in the Netherlands, but so far no luck. Are you Belgian or Dutch? How about the keyboard layout. Is it easily changeable to Dutch or US settings?

    Thanks in advance,
    Dirk.

    Hi everyone,

So far I've seen no Dutch versions of this laptop. They dont' seem to be available yet. So far I've only seen the German HDX9270EG HDX9130EG and HDX9350EG and the Belgian HDX9350EB. I don't know what would be te best choice for me because they al seem to have either a German or Belgian keyboard. I don't know if this is easily fixable. And also do I get the choice of installing the Belgian(Dutch or French) or German or English version of Windows Vista? Perhaps some Dutch, Belgian or German members can explain this to me?

    Many thanks in advance,
    Dirk.

I've bought mine in Belgium at Media Markt (there was an action 11% off).
About the keyboard, the lay-out is azerty. But with my Acer desktop now, i have Azerty keyboard too, but at Windows Vista Setup you can change it to any keyboard you want. Although the letters on your keyboard won't match with the letters you type on screen =p.
In belgium it costs about 1999 euro (got mine for 1779)
In the language setup you can normally choose between 2 languages. At mine that is Dutch and English.
If you buy in Germany, then you will have the option between english and German I think.
Language is easily to change. Just start you computer and login, then you see at the taskbar an icon (ENG, NL,...) just click on it and you can change it immediately

    Thanks Maarten,

Do you know of any Belgian retailer who can also ship to the Netherlands?

It seems Misco.nl also sell the 9350EB (with azerty keyboar) for about 1867,- Euro. Maybe that's an option for me.

Don't know which I prefer the 9270EG with T9300 but no bluray or 9350EB with T8300 and Bluray.

dikkiedirk, i'd go for the HP HDX9350EB because of the blu-ray. I've checked and the difference between T8300 and T9300 isn't that big.
If you buy the HDX9350EB, then buy it at Misco.nl
I don't know a retailer in belgium that can ship to the Netherlands and in Belgium the minimum price is 1950 euro.
I checked the benchmarks for cpu's at http://www.cpubenchmark.net. Both CPU's are in the High End Chart.
The Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 is at place 53 with 1653 calculations/clock
The Intel Core 2 Duo T8300 is at place 61 with 1380 calculations/clock
There is a difference, but it's not that big

Well, the time has come to splurge. Between the Clevo D901C/Sager NP9262 and the HDX decked out, I purchased the HDX day before yesterday (my ship date is June 3rd, so I should have it in about two weeks).

I went with 2GB of RAM, since I can just buy 4gigs less expensively locally. I also went with the 400gigs of storage, simply because the dual 200gigs are 7200RPM drives. Speed baby, speed! (that Clevo/Sager model -- hands down -- wins for pure speed, though!!) and everything else maxed out.

Never thought of this, and it really isn't an issue, but is the current model/config of the HDX have a QAM tuner?

I ordered the "quick dock" thing. Serial ports are a BIG issue for me. Before I purchased this HDX, I purchased eight USB --> Serial adapters and some powered (TRUE powered) USB hubs (I serial control a greenhouse, and ham radio/satellite gear). Will be fun to not only have all data windows open, but open at the same time!

The absolute showstopper for me with the Clevo/Sager is that infernal bastardization of the 10-key keypad. Why in the world a *KEYBOARD* manufacturer (SOMEbody had to make the keyboard itself) would think it was a good idea to remove the "-", "+", and "ENTER" keys away from the far-right side of the keypad is beyond me. Sometimes in the production business, you HAVE to say to your client, "hey look now, I KNOW this is YOUR design, but look... this is a really bad idea."

I look forward to my new computer. Again, THANK YOU everybody here for all of the advice and insights. I had a fairly large budget for myself for a computer. Now, I got a better HDX than when I was first spec'ing them out a few weeks ago (the specs all went up, the prices all went down). And with the leftover cash, I purchased a nice 42" HDTV I can run the HDX to.

Just a question, though -- I keep finding that "yes, you can do that" as well as "no, that's just not how it works".

I've got a Playstation 2 with the old-style RCA-type jacks (yellow, red, white) -- could I hook up the PS2 to the HDX? I can deal with resolution matching and whatnot on my own.

As with all computers, the longer you wait, the less expensive and faster everything will be.

Wait until you can wait no more.

    Hello everybody

I am now the owner of a brand new HDX Dragon with a x9000 and a geforce 8800m (YEAH!!!!)

I just finished re-reading the WHOLE lounge thread and I have a couple of questions.

My system is vista 64 ultimate - what graphic driver do you guys suggest to update to?

I read about ASUHORU suggesting the 174.74
    http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=18049

but seems to me that it's a 32bit driver... ?

also on the official HP hdx 64bit page they have one which is more recent than mine the "NVIDIA NB8E-GT VGA" Driver

    http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=18049

(dated may 2008) has anyone tried that one? If I install it would I be able to easily revert back? (not familiar with Vista yet)

    Thanks!

I thought that the HDX9390 would have a 1920 x 1200 screen. At least the HDX9390EF (French version?) has it.

Taille de l'écran Ecran large haute définition WUXGA 20,1” + Ultra BrightView HP

    Résolution de l'écran 1920 x 1200

    Hi all,

I know it's been a while since you all heard me b#$$tch. But I did promise that I would get back with the final results of our adventures with HP and the HDX before July 4th.
We had left off with having the send back our repalcement of the replacement HDX. Becuase the power inverter went bad on both.
Bye-the-way it appears HP is no longer offering our display. They never gave a reason why. But once again we had 2 diplays go bad. I never got any recall notice. But I did see posted someplace about some sort of HDX recall. but can not find it posted here anymore.

    Now back to our adventure.
They would not give us our money back. But,
Guess what happend? Can you guess? That's right. They sent us another brand new HDX with all kinds of Bells and whistles. When we added everything up. The computer came to around $5100 worth of computer instead of the $4,000 we had paid. Good interest rate for six months of agravation. Hee Hee.
The replacement of the replacement of the replacemnt of the replacement has now been working great for 3 weeks. No lockups bad webcam and the TV card even has QAM and a FM tuner.
So, "knock on wood" it continues to work.

To us, It looks like it took 4 HDX's to get a good one. Strange. I wonder if we won some sort of lottery to be a BETA tester.
I wonder if the refurbs that HP are selling are any of my bad ones??

As was said before. It's not a good idea to be the 1st on your block with a new toy from HP. Wait at least a year. Before you buy an HP product.

In anycase I'm happy with the HDX I have now.
At least Once we were able to talk to a case manager. They seemed to work with us for the entire time.

    Good luck.
