Which one is that? The HP one is listed as " up to 17" " ... ??? Is that big enough?
-
-
nope, have xp and win 2000 pro dual boot on mine. I have not run into a program for xp that i could not get to work on 2k pro. they both use the same kernel just interface and other stuff is different. guts are still the same.
ive never had any good experiences with virtualization. none. if i want virtualization i make another machine just for that OS ^.^ -
the locking sounds like missing chipset drivers imo. as far as booting off usb drive your way ahead of me on that one havent tried that. If you have XP pro, your RAM limitation is set to 4GB. You could however use 64 bit XP pro, that would allow you to see up to (i think) 16gb of memory. problem is, is that with a 64 bit OS you cant use your 32 bit drivers. and if 32 bit drivers are hard to find for this laptop, you better believe 64 bit drivers are next to impossible.
The instability is probably wrong drivers or missing chipset drivers. I have my HDX up with almost all the devices found, the only one im missing atm is the reader for the little remote to work. Other than that ive been able to install all my chipset, sound, video, even got a ATI catalyst to work on this laptop.
id also like to mention that the drivers that ATI gives us must be modded using a third party modding utility to change the .ini files for these laptops to read as an embedded ati video vs. (from the ati site) a full sized card version of the same video driver we have in our laptops.
sorry cant reference everything at the moment, but i check this post at the worst monthly and if you need any help getting your HDX with XP up id be more than happy to help ya just give me a word. Why would I do this?
Simple... No one should have to be subjected to Vista.... EVER. When vista and windows 7 comes out i dont care about the interface, i dont care about the whirly graphics, all i wanna know is ONE thing..
did you make the kernel more stable? no.
IMO the world would be better off with no Vista as Vista is nothing but headaches in my work enviroment. When an employee for example tells me their printer isnt working the first to things i ask are, are you on vista? and are you on wireless? both to me are a big mess up.
just my opinion ^.^ -
Good point Eclypse3D, but I need the weight distributed equally, hence the need for a backpack. I figure it will be about 25-30lbs when I am done because of the other misc stuff i will have in there (cell, PSP, books, bluetooth headsets, various chargers, etc.). I am used to carrying around that much and more with previous laptops. The weight distribution is needed because sometimes I walk with a cane (no it's not from carrying all that tech around lol).
Phinfan, the link you posted had a number of bags, the only one i saw that came close was the one at the bottom, The HP 17" Notebook backpack. But it doesn't look like it will fit the Dragon. I could be wrong though.
UPS called me to tell me that I am expecting a package that requires a signature tomorrow. So I will be outside waiting for my Dragon to arrive

I was looking at the Seagate 500 GB Momentus drive, does anyone have this installed?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148374&Tpk=ST9500420ASG
I can get it on ebay for 115 shipped.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110421300913&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
What are people's experiences with Seagate 7200 drives? Does it get too HOT/NOISY in our Dragons? Also, sorry for the noob question, but I've seen 7200.2, 7200.3, 7200.4, 7200.11, 7200.12, what is the difference, what is the best?
Please inform me, cause i'm about to drop some coin to make my lower end 9010NR better! -
Why do you use 2000 anyway, let alone XP especially when you get no bass and Vista works so nicely with enough memory on the HDX? I don't remember if we were talking about video capture, but I got away from firestb and DVHSCap via firewire and am only using my Hauppauge PVR to record in 1080i via component cables and USB and it's worked VERY nicely.
-
I actually got XP working fine, except I screwed up the sound but no biggie. Because I'm now just using the Hauppauge I don't need XP really at all anymore but I do appreciate the help offered. In case I need to record via firewire which I may and run into problems I'll see if I can ask you what's up. While I do realize people have had driver problems with Vista and printer/wireless problems, I haven't had any really for my needs. Vista runs nicely especially with the service packs. What I'm thinking I'll do is get a dual boot with Windows Vista 64 bit and Windows Vista 64 bit..though I'm also hoping to get an extra internal storage device like maybe a new express card SSD that are I guess now available (I only see them in the UK right now for a lot of money). What I'm wondering is if it would be ok to install an OS on it or just use it for extra storage...though eventually with my movie recordings I'm thinking I'll have to get either a server or some tower or something to house many regular high capacity desktop hard drives. In the meantime I'm STILL trying to find a freaking QuickDock that works so I can stream via Slingbox! I think I've gone through 5 already.. -
I have the one that has the shock protection which is just like that one expect that extra feature of or like $10-$20 extra unless you can find it cheaper elsewhere:
http://www.onsale.com/ttsvr/p/produ...b;jsessionid=310C34090006C68307D2757C96D1E30E
Works fine for me. The only problem I'm having is with stupid Firefox wanting to crash with its memory leak like every 5-6 hours. It also tries to take out my video driver as well when it goes which recovers most times anyway. It's gotten better with the update, most times I'll go an entire day without it crashing now (depending on how hard I push it that is) but I haven't really had a problem with the hard drives..though I guess when you really load these things up it can make load times a little bit slower but I think that's expected. When I had half the problems I installed on here I'd get 20-30 second to fully boot..now its like 10 seconds more or so. With the 8800 it doesn't run hot or get loud. It's wonderful with the HDX! I'm no expert but I believe the 7200.4 is the highest laptop hard drives go so far at least for reasonable cost. They just dropped them around Christmas, January or February I believe so they haven't been around THAT long to have made a significant upgrade..though if they did they are probably a lot more money..but I haven't checked recently. -
I'm probably mistaken but doesn't the Rolling case they sell at hp turn into a back pack? It may be too heavy though..not sure.
As you stated and as my bookmarks recall for me these Olivia backpacks were I believe reported to work ok:
http://www.overstock.com/Luggage-Bags/Olympia-Cambridge-20-inch-Laptop-Backpack/3114630/product.html
The ideal ones were the Alienware Aurora mALX Backpacks but they're very hard to come by. -
I guess it wasn't rhumba? ilovedragons just dropped off the face of the planet it seems.
Just seems like if you were in the middle of making progress that that could have lead somewhere no? You seemed shocked or surprised to have gotten it to do all you got it to do. Except I guess the BIOS tools would have been needed to decrypt the BIOS and all. Wouldn't something like NZERO do something like that?
I could be wrong but there seems to be several MXM upgraders at that MXM forum who believe you can do the upgrade even with different BIOSes after they claimed to have checked to see that the BIOSes were different by manually opening up enough of them to observe them from what I understand. I'm obviously no expert but just relaying what they (in particular the dood over there that successfully upgraded it but is having problems with overheating due to the heat sink) said.
I was just relaying what you said so I was pretty sure you'd at least like that part
Lol.
HP lists crap like 50 times the price you can get it for at Ebay so $1600 isn't surprising. Though..do you think that would already come with an HP BIOS? I'm thinking no but...maybe each are pre specified for each system? I dunno. People have reported listings for the 3700 on Ebay I think about as much as I'll see 2.8 top specs HDXs so who knows. If someone wants something bad enough many times they find a way. For example I've seen like 4 HDXs w cto'd 2.8GHZ/X9000s and top specs/w the 8800 these past two months pass by so.. If someone can possibly get the software tools or if they release an HP with a 280, though I think there is one with a 3700 (maybe get a broken or cheap HP EliteBook 8730w Mobile Workstation), wouldn't that eliminate most of the problems other than physical shaping it to make it work? The HDX18 has one last upgrade due before they get rid of that too no? -
You see, ZERO progress was being made. Seeing shaders and Model number through a fuzzy and slow updating screen via a driver's Nvidia control panel does not equate to progress.
Putzing with the BIOS is lethal and seriously ill advised.
There was ZERO hope of getting it to work. If i still had the card, there would be no progress. Trust me.
Different notebooks. Makes the info less relevant than it appears to be.
If they release an HP with a 280M , it will be MXM type B, v3.0. TYPE III is dead going forward. 3700M is your last hope.
Generally speaking, HP's prices are about where they should be for new. What you generally find on ebay are used pulls or class B parts. So $1600 for a new 3700M is about fair.
As for the BIOS problem, the 8800m GTS is a custom made card for HP. Which likely means that their implementation of the MXM III format is also customized to a degree.
What worked on a HP 8710 notebook means practically nothing concerning any compatiblity with the HDX seeing that the ODM for each unit is different. HDX Dragon is made by Inventec. 8710w is probably made by Compal or Quanta. Each ODM has their own way of implementing things depending on the contract of manufacture.
In any event, to make the experiment with the 3700M viable, we would need a good, reliable source for the cards. Ebay is not one of them.
That's one of the reasons why I took the plunge on the 280M. If it worked, anyone could acquire them at a reasonable price from a central source.
We're a community, yes? So we shouldn't be "I gots mine, ain't worried about his" when it comes to sourcing parts. Relying on ebay forces that situation. It's one thing if a particular member can't afford to acquire a card at a particular moment. At least if there is a decent source, and that member wants to be able to upgrade, they can save up for it reasonably sure it will be available by the time they can afford it. What's more, we can have a standard modification that's accessible to all. Even if one of us has to make a modification component and send it to another member. -
2.0 you wouldn't happen to know where I can get a replacement spring for the left click button on my touchpad would ya?
-
Sorry about the bad link for the backpack. If that does not work I will PM the link. The bag is mode specifically for the Dragon.

Guys, anybody familiar with hp's shipping policy, especially shipping insurance? My dragon's left click button spring is worn, and the ac plug recipticle has play in it, should I send it in or just get the parts and do it myself.
-
I don't think anyone sells just a spring. You'd have to buy the entire top cover: 448174-001. Costs about $150 delivered from HP.
Possible that you can fix the spring yourself by removing the top cover and seeing what happened. Maybe all you need is some crazy glue.
As for your Ac plug recepticle, you can buy a new cable off ebay for <$5 shipped. It's the same power cord used for monitors. -
Are your firefox/memory/video driver problems due to your new HD? Or is that something completely unrelated, and I should go ahead and get that drive? PS that ebay link I provided, is for the drive WITH the G shock detection, and still for only $115 shipped.
Anyone else have this drive? 2.0? -
Ok, my Dragon arrived about 45 mins ago, and all I can say is.......OMFG!! I LOVE THIS MACHINE!!!
WHEW!!!
Ok, so now that i am semi-calm, I figure I will leave it as is for now. While i don't like Vista, it isn't giving me a hard time. I will have to install updated drivers and such, back backup DVDs and get rid of the bloatware (a clean install of Vista should fix that.).
Question. Has anyone had problems with the wifi card not reporting full Wireless N speeds?? My router is Wireless-N and it's rated for up to 300Mbps. Other PCs in the house are getting 270Mbps, but the Dragon is getting 144Mbps. Looks like a driver issue, but I want to make sure before I do anything else. -
Nope, I have SSDs and 320GB 7200RPM HDDs in my HDX's. But that drive is fine.
Dom's issues aren't related to the drive. Firefox is the culprit. -
Congrats and welcome aboard!
Definitely update the wifi driver. Also check the settings of the driver under advanced in control panel's device manager. Set throughput enhancement to enabled. -
Thanks 2.0. Glad to be aboard finally. 10 months and it was worth the wait.
As for the wireless issue, I updated the drivers, changed the throughput to enabled, but still says speed is at 144Mbps. I think I need to reboot the router, as that sometimes fixes problems like this. Not a biggie right now, as i tested the video streaming from my server to the Dragon and it's perfect. And if push comes to shove, I will order the Intel wifi link 5300 I am watching on ebay and just have 2 wifi cards installed. Thanks for the help 2.0.
Another question. Has anyone had problems with their remote control not working?? I want to say that it needs new batteries. I put the batteries in that came with it, but nothing happens when i hit the buttons. I'll pick up some at the store later as I am using my last 3 blank DVDs to make restore discs. -
Is the driver on HP's website the latest one, or is there a newer one elsewhere?
-
Newer one on Intel's website.

Usually HP doesn't offer the latest up-to-date drivers. But I just cheat and either read through the forums, or use Driver Genius Pro
-
The power connector that I'm refering to is the one shaped like a box that physically supplies power to the board (sorry for not being specific). Thanks for the help with touchpad, I'm just not sure about sending stuff into HP. Knowing that I'm under warranry what would you do, fix it yourself or ship it to HP?
-
You can call or email HP about the power supply. They will send you a new one in a week since you're under warranty.
As for your touchpad button, if you're inclined and confident, I'd get a copy of the service manual and have a look at it yourself. Likely, it should be something you can fix.
I dread the notion of sending a computer back to the manufacturer for repair. But that's just me. Never did it, likely never will. But I've been fortunate enough to never have anything go wrong that I had to even consider it. -
I feel the same way. I build PCs from home and I have never sent one into the Manufacturer or a repair shop. If i can't do it myself, then it's a goner.
-
Has anyone tried to set up their dragon with dual tv tuners sucessfully? I never heard from anyone regarding my posts #7272 and 7273 about two mini-PCI express tuners (one in the open slot next to the wifi). My first quick experiment yeilded no results, but I'm still curious if it can be done. 2.0 and others, any thoughts?
-
Theres one or two people selling parts and an HDX for parts so you may want to ask them to get it cheaper if you feel you can do it yourself. If you do, just do a search for HDX9000.
-
No. Firefox with my hard drives have been fine for a while..it was some update that messed it up and it got better with 3.10 or whatever one, but it seems some of the newer versions after 3 just sucked badly. As 2.0 said the drives are fine. I didn't look as closely, but checked out the product number and thought it was slightly different from the one I posted. The product numbers are very similar, but if you verified that its the shock proof one then sweet, go for it, as that's a great price. When you install it or memory or anything really make sure you turn off your HDX, unplug the battery, take the battery out, drain it if you would by holding down the power button for 30 seconds, then install the hard drive, memory, or whatever so you avoid shorting as 2.0 has pointed out before.
-
Other people got blue screens, and you got booting, and GPU and shader recognition, that isn't progress? I don't want to speak for AlphaHex, but he seems to know what he's doing with BIOSes. NZERO isn't what's needed?
How so? What do you mean
3700 it is then. You think they'd put a 9800 in any or would it be the same situation as the 280? They seem kinda behind with GPUs, like on the HDX18.
I thought you said that if the MXM can be pulled from an HP notebook that that similarity will make it more likely to work. I see what you're saying about community and that's fine, but if the MXM thing is so hit and miss, and if pulled MXMs from an HP notebook is the only possible way to make sure it can work, are you saying no one should upgrade their GPUs because we may have to get it from Ebay? BTW I emailed HP about the HDX 20 inch Dragon to request an updated version, and if they will at any point implement an upgrading department like Alienware has..no surprise that I got no response except an auto response that they were out of the office if you can count that
-
Nope, ain't progress. Blue screen or fuzzy screens are indicative of incompatibility.
BIOS work/updating is a dead end. Too many unknowns. Too much risk.
Progress would be, "it works!" But heats up too much. Figuring out a thermal management solution is manageable. Though might not be elegant.
Different BIOS, different specs, different MXM implementation. It's like saying, "MXM card worked in my Alienware, shouldn't it work in an HP?" Just because the manufacturer is the same doesn't mean the system is the same. What you want to see is the same ODM (original design manufacturer). If the 8710w/8730w were made by Inventec, then it would be relevant.
Actually, HP is pretty good at using the latest GPUs. Beat Dell on many occasions. The 130M is the latest mid tier offering from Nvidia and fits the thermal profile of the notebook. Essentially its a rebranded 9600M but with some tweaks. A 9800M is obsolete and wouldn't fit the thermal design of the notebook. At least not to HP's way of thinking.
I did. Until that is I confirmed that the 8800M GTS is proprietary (made specifically and exclusively for the Dragon) as I have been saying from the get go.
In essence, yes. Since you may not even be able to get one from ebay in the first place. I mean look at our friend who allegedly got a hold of a 9800M
GTX from an Alienware and installed it. The information turned out to be worthless. And let's say a poster succeeds in getting a 3700M to work (doubtful). Just about everyone would want one. How will they obtain it if there are none being sold or being sold by someone reputable given the cost?
(Which is usually the case.)
Simple rule is; if you make an endeavor public, you have a responsibility to the public.
BTW, it's not precisely hit and miss as you seem to understand it. If you find a card that works, it will work for all.
They will never, ever respond to an email request about future products because of non-disclosure agreements. Imagine if you were a reporter or
journalist? Only way to find out is to have someone on the inside who can tell you.
The answer though to both questions is: no. -
Here's a picture of the 3700M from an HP. As you can see, it's a custom made version for HP. (Compare to standard 3700M cards and you'll see it right away.)
HP version: (notice GPU cant angle, red cement, BIOS version imprinted/etched on right side of board, and variations in component placements.)
Standard version:
Also, if you notice, the two large silver components on the top of the custom HP board appear to be wider and lower in height to accomodate a heatsink plate being placed over them in the same manner in which the HDX's heatsink overlaps those components on the 8800M GTS.
Is it possible that the HP version would work in the HDX? Not likely seeing it's a custom made version for the 8730W. I'm fairly certain that a standard version of the 3700M wouldn't work either as it has very similiar specs to the 280M GTX.
So I'm calling the mission a bust unless someone is willing to risk $400-$1600 in spite of the evidence that points to a likelihood of failure. Since specifications are hard (virtually impossible) to come by, the only way to know with absolute certainty is to try it out. -
Well the laptop would be staying in my city as the repair center is local. I wish I could just get them to give me the parts so I could do it myself. Just like with my car I always prefer that I do it myself rather than trust someone who really doesnt care about the end result like myself.
-
When I push my power button on the laptop or the remote or the start menu, it turns off the screen, but does not sleep. I have checked the advanced power settings and they state sleep. Shutting the lid puts it in sleep mode, but I'd rather keep it open. Any idea why this may be happening?
-
Hello,
Digital TV, I can't get any subchannel like 26-2, 26-3; however, I can get 26-1. Is this the limitation of the TV Tuner? Any software update? I am on Window Vista. -
I think this may be what you are looking for. Even though I have my dragon now, I still check ebay for auctions in case I need parts.
I hope it helps. -
Welcome aboard RemyL75.
I've had my HDX since last October..absolutely love it!
Thanks 2.0 for the info. I've just purchased the caddy for my 2nd hard drive(should be coming in about a week or so)...I'm going to take your advice here and get an SSD before I even think about upgrading from 4GB to 8GB ram......again, thanks! -
If you want a good deal on a great SSD, ZipZoomFly.com has the 60GB OCZ Summit series for about $138 after $30 rebate and 20% bing.com cashback. Great price if you don't mind waiting for the rebate and cashback.
Newegg.com had a great deal on a similar drive, but by Super Talent, for $139, no rebates or cashback needed, but they sold out in a few hours this morning.
SSD's are great.
-
Thanks
I discovered the HDX in early October and was going to buy it then, but Newegg (and everyone else) ran out of it about 1 week before i had the money. I've been on the hunt ever since. Finally found a refurb on ebay (I can't tell it's refurb, and I've been looking for any and all signs of it for 2 days now.). This is by far the best laptop I have ever owned.
. Now all of my tech friends want one. All I can tell them is they better get it now while ebay still has them.
-
I have read through these threads and have seen that it is possible to upgrade the CPUs in these wonderful devices. I currently own the 9494nr I purchased through New Egg about a year ago. IT has the t8100 21gHz chip I believe. I read a post that I can't upgrade to the Ps or montevino chips.
I have the HP service manual and want to attempt this. I need a CPU first. Where is the best and cheapest place to get an upgrade CPU?
Thanks -
Ok, well, I have seen the T7700s on ebay starting around 91 bucks. That will take you from 2.1Ghz to 2.4Ghz. Not much of a performance boost, but it's a start. Plus it's cheap (you did mention cheap) compared to the Core 2 Extreme X7900s that are around 250-300. Just as with anything, pay attention to what you are buying and who you are buying it from.
Also, I would suggest you try to stay away from any CPU that has "ES" at the end of the name or serial number in the description. It stands for "Engineering Sample" I believe. Basically, it means that it was a test CPU and while they said it was ok, it could still have bugs.
Hope that helps you in your search. -
So a T7700 is better then the higher number T8100?
-
Now i could be wrong, but I am thinking that the T7700 might be. As least, going off of what I am reading from Intel...
It is .3 Ghz faster than the T8100 and it has a 4MB cache. The T8100 has a 3MB cache...
I am not saying that I am an expert in this, but the numbers from Intel are saying IMO that the T7700 would be a better CPU.
2.0 I believe is more knowledgeable in this subject matter and could prob give you a better answer. Hopefully he will see this and respond and correct me if I am wrong or missed something. -
Yeah, the previous response wasn't intended to show a disbelief, but for some reasons when I see a number that is higher I tend to lean towards that being the better option. I have been wrong about this multiple times, nothing more confuses me then how nvidia numbers their GPUS. How a 8800 could be better than a 9400 beats me logically looking at the number, but when you dive deeper into their specs you clearly see why the lower number is better than the higher.
I am open to many opinions, I just want to make sure I get as much so I can make an educated decision. It is a nice machine as it stands, but I think I can get a nice boost out of upgrading the CPU.
It's mainly for gaming purposes. I play WoW a lot on this thing. It performs above average for the most part, but I was told that the way WoW is coded, it will max out the CPU before utilizing the entire GPU. So I figure if I upgrade the CPU I will be able to get better performance out of WoW.
I have had the thought occur to me to overclock the CPU and the GPU but there are a couple things from stopping me. It's a laptop and I am a bit more uncomfortable overclocking anything in a laptop. I can't seem to find a way to access the complete BIOS. Maybe I'm not supposed to. I also don't have much experience doing it so the risk factor is pretty high in my opinion.
So if there are any other suggestions out there on how I can get the most out of this thing by tweaking hardware, software, or upgrading I welcome it. -
Oh, sorry, I didn't mean to imply that you didn't believe me. I know that sometimes companies will play mind tricks with you on the product numbering. Making you think that if you buy the higher numbered one on the product line that you will be getting the better product. Intel has admitted themselves recently that their numbering is confusing (about time).
I have found the specs on all of the CPUs that are compatable with the HDX Dragon. I don't know if anyone has done this already (If i were to look back all 7000+ entries in this forum, I would be here another 10 months lol), if so, this will keep people from having to go back and look it up.

This is fantastic, I know exactly which ones I can and cannot use now. Great work thanks!
Any other performance enhancements your would recommend I try. I've messed with the power options so that the CPU is always at 100% I have also set nvidia's control panel to use the best settings for WoW. -
Yep, you're correct, it is faster. But only about 10%-12% faster. You won't notice a 10-12% boost.
Better to get a t9300, t9500, or X9000.
T9300 (2.5ghz) will give you a better than 25% increase in perf. You can get an engineering sample (ES) off ebay for around $200. They start with a "Q" in their model number. Just make sure it has C0 stepping. That means it is pretty much a retail chip.
T9500 will give you an extra 2-4% increase in perf over the T9300 for about $25-$50 more. You can also find them on ebay.
X9000 will give you a 8-12% boost over the T9300. But you will pay significantly more for it. An extra $250-$500. The extra cost is due to it having an unlocked multiplier so it can be overclocked. Except you can't overclock it in the HDX. So you will be paying for something you can't use.
Best bet is the T9500 as that gives most bang for buck over what you have now. But T9300 is a good second choice and if you can't justify paying $25-$50 more for an unnoticable 2-4% increase in performance, by all means get the T9300. You won't regret either. -
Thanks 2.0 for answering my call for help.
I forgot about the Q in the ES CPU model numbers. I have read all of that before, hell prob from one of your earlier posts, just couldn't remember it all. Hence the call for help. Thanks again. -
thanks guys! great information and quick responses. I have the info I need.
Thanks! -
Hey guys, quick question, I was cleaning out my fans the thorough way (taking off hinge, cover) and while fiddling with the DVD drive to get to one of the screws, I think I may have triggered some internal mechanism/part, because now after everything is reassembled, the DVD drive opens REALLY REALLY EASILY. Like if I touch the drive, it clicks open. I dont have to push the button, I just need to gently touch anywhere on the drive and it clicks open. Really really annoying, since I move my laptop around a lot with one hand on each side of the laptop, meaning my right hand brushes the DVD drive and opens right up. Every time. Anyone know hot to make it go back to normal? Do I need to press/depress something, or even take the drive apart?
A million billion thanks
