Nehalem for notebooks won't debut until Q2 (summer) 2009. (You're not waiting for that are you?)
HP's entire Centrino 2 Pavillion line is out today. (No mention or hint of a new HDX.)
Also, left a post for you a few pages back concerning a new HDX desktop.
-
-
Mine arrived at 8:30 AM today, a day before it was supposed to SHIP. So far, so good! The screen is amazing!

Congrats Joe!
-
I read that Desktop-HDX post. Clearly, it has nothing to do with its Notebook kin - the 'beloved-by-many' HDX Notebook.
Not waiting for the release of Nehalem!
The release of HP's dv5t and dv7t give (no mare than) a taste of the pie. More is on the way that will get added including the inclusion of WIMAX technology.
"The New HDX"
The 'new' HDX will come out with all the new technology, bells, and whistle options within the next 30 to 60 days (conservative estimate from Diane of HP). "Though it could roll out in as little as 10 days" she said. They are briefed only one week ahead of HP's release of all new machines. But when they are 'newer' releases of existing ones most (except for some senior personnel) get no briefing until the release takes place.
There will be a new HDX - Confidence remains High!Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
If there is to be a new HDX in the 20" variety, they might be waiting for the release of the QX9300 which Intel confirms will be August.
As to the HDX desktop, it's quite relevant. It confirms that "HDX" will become a line in similar vein to Dell's XPS line. Which demonstrates that HP is looking to take Dell head on in the "upscale" and high margin segment of the market. expect to see a 13", 15" and 17" HDX.
Recall that the HDX 9000 was the answer to Dell's XPS 2010.
That said, while I don't doubt that there will be new HDX notebooks, (as I know somone who has become a reliable source that hinted such and hasn't been wrong of late) I'm rather skeptical that there will be another 20". It will be the only 20" on the market. There's no talk out of Dell of another 20" "transportable' notebook. I think HP is going to go with 18.4" as that is the "new 20 inch" that several manufacturers are already putting out there. Acer and Toshiba of note.
We'll see... -
At first I wondered why HP named a desktop HDX and added confusion to the Notebook. I see your point and the relevancy.
Yes, HP could very well be waiting for the August release of Intel's Quad Core QX9300 with 12MB L2 cache and TDP of 45W (Clock Speed 2.53 GHz!?).
Notwithstanding my continued admiration to your knowledge and fellowship, I (truly) hope you are wrong about the new HDX coming out with less than a 20" screen. And because the others are moving toward smaller 18" screens, I feel that it is more so added reason for HP to continue offering that which no one else does - and that would be 'the only' 20" Notebook, which also would effectively be truly state-of-the-art-and-technology. -

This did not fix the eject button. All other buttons work, although a little squirrely. Could be a defective switch? Too bad, everything else is good!
JoeNeil -
When my eject button failed on me, not only did I use Black Knight's fix but also reinstalled quick play. Found in Swsetup\QPW.
For a better chance at sucesss, uninstall quicktouch buttons and quickplay software. Reboot. Then re-install quick touch buttons then quickplay. Reboot.
It would be so bad if there was a Fn+key combo that acted as a backup eject. -
I got my yesterday and so far no problems. However mine came with one hdd and I'm going to buy a second, where do I get the bracket for a second drive?
-
Hello all,
Long time reader here who decided to bite the bullet and buy one of these. Received today with no problems so far. I went with the x64 version so I have some learning to do. Plan to format tonight and do an updated driver install. I'd like to give thanks to the members of this forum for their patience and guidance. -

Finally got mine today! After over a week in customs and another $360 to get it out it's here!
So far everything appears to work fine. Eject worksJust suffering through the Recovery Disk creation. Such a shame, watching this thing of beauty just sit there while I have to wait
My Targus bag should be here on the 22nd so I'll have photos by then. -
HDX 9430 announced! (in France)
Doesn't change much in terms of config, but that means it's still alive and kicking.
http://www.laptopspirit.fr/14973/he...n-201’’-hdx9430-et-hdx9450-geforce-8800m.html -
And now they're being sold at the following stores:
-
Yeah, I hope the people that bought these when they first came out at 150% more than they are now are not jumping off of buildings!!!
-
I personally learned a lot from the early adopters. -
I wonder how much lower they are going to go. When the cost of a machine with hi-rez screen, the 8K graphics, and a 9300 chip went below $2k I had to jump. Where will it end?
-
Nah, this is pretty much it as far as price dropping. Product EOL and inventory clean out. Plus store prices wont drop. You'll probably stop seeing it being sold on their US website by the middle of next month if not sooner. If there's a replacement, probably won't see it until end of August, beginning of September. And it will start out much higher in price.
-
Hello, I'm new here. After quite a bit of research (including reading this thread and the Alienware forum), I've decided to order the HDX. However, I have two questions:
1. I'm going on vacation next week and don't want the package shipped while I'm away. I'm planning to order around August 5 or so. In light of some recent posts, should I be concerned of a significant risk that the machine will no longer be available then?
2. I'm going to be using it primarily for gaming. Sports, Racing (GRID), RTS, RPG (e.g., Mass Effect), FPS (UT III, not Crysis). Secondarily for Blueray movies. Is there any reason to go for the T9500 CPU rather than the T9300?
I appreciate any thoughts. -
Anyway, figure from date of order to your front door is about 1.5 - 2 weeks.
2. No reason to go for the T9500. The T9300 represents no bottleneck in gaming. In fact the difference in FPS with the T9500 and T9300 would be 1 frame avg. Totally not worth the extra $250. -
Thanks for the response, 2.0. I guess I'll chance waiting until after the trip.
And, of course, report my thoughts here when it's up and running. -
Hi everyone,
I've been looking at the HDX now for a little over a year now. In this time, I found this fantastic forum to help keep up to date on the latest developments. After much ado, I purchased one with the following configuration a few weeks ago.

It came in two days ago, and I have a few questions about it that I'd appreciate help with.
1) When I try to create the recovery discs for the system, it gives me an error around the time it is varifying the disc and says that it couldn't burn correctly. I have tried burning both + and - R media, and have used multiple brands, yet I continue to get the same error.
2) There is one dead pixel on the screen, however, I don't want to return the computer for something that small, so does anyone know of a way to fix dead/stuck pixels. I've tried using programs, but they don't seem to work.
3) The quick touch buttons don't always work properly--a few times after a reboot, when I change the volume, treble, or bass, the graphic depiction stays on the screen for too long (once for each time the button was pressed) and causes problems.
Any advice would be helpful.
Thank you,
Brenton -
Hey, we have the same setup!
1.) No idea at the moment, will have to look into it. Though I used HP's DVD+R Lightscribe discs and had no problems burning them for 3 computers (2 HDXs, 1 TX2500).
2.) One trick that sometimes works is to massage the area with the dead pixel. If you have a lint free cloth (like the gray cloth that comes with the HDX), place it on the screen in the area of the area of the dead pixel and gently massage it an a circular motion. Add a bit more pressure until you can see ripples being made. Do this for about a minute or two. The use DPT (dead pixel tester) and select pixel exerciser. Move that fast flashing box over the area where hopefully the dead pixel was.
URL to DPT: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Dead_Pixel_Tester_d4806.html
3.) Yep, that thing is a PITA. Get rid of the on screen display as it's really not necessary. Here's how:
In the start menu search box, type msconfig. (If you have JV16 or CCleaner they work too.)
click the startup tab.
Scroll down the list of startup programs until you find HP Quicktouch Oncreen display. Uncheck it.
Then click the boot tab.
(Hot tip alert!) Click the advanced button. Click on processors and select 2. (Helps with boot up.) Then click ok.
No back on the boot tab screen, you will see a box in the lower right corner that says, "make all boot settings permanent." click it.
Reboot and say by to the On screen display. To adjust bass and treble in teh future, just right click the speaker icon in the tray, click playback devices, speakers + redirected headphones, tone controls tab.
If ever you don't see this tone control tabs, it means that MS update downloaded and installed what they consider to be an updated sound driver. Just reinstall the sound driver that's contained in swsetup and make sure windows doesn't do that again by hiding that option for the sound driver. -
Thanks 2.0. The Quick Touch Button fix worked well, however, I didn't have any luck with the dead pixel issue. I tried following your reccomendation numerous times, but to no avail. What would you recommend for a course of action? Other then that, I'll keep trying with the recovery media and hopefully I'll have some luck.

CARRYING CASES----
My Dicota MultiGiant (19-20in) Case just arrived today. It is perfect for toting the Dragon with you. Purchased from Amazon for $42 with free shipping, what a deal. Case is heavy material (Koskin) like most Targus cases, has two large compartments (one is for documents only (quite thin) and then a large deep side for the beast.. There is an outside "leather" flap pocket for the brick, mouse, etc, plenty of room. When it's all loaded you'll be glad they included a shoulder strap for the weight. As to use..you would NOT use this case as luggage on a plane(as I did the regular HP Tote Along). But it is the most comforable and practical way to move the HDX around. You won't be dissapointed for the money. David -
I need to get a new back pack and i want to be able to carry my dragon in it(i feel so cool being able to call my laptop a dragon), does anyone know of a backpack that can carry my monster?
-
$500- non-stackable coupon is back for a limited time. (For configs > $1399.)
CODE: NB4513
So that amounts to $300 off. -
Wait, I think I misunderstood. Is it dead or stuck? Dead = black. Stuck = some other color like red or green. If it's dead then unfortunately, it's likely to stay that way.
One other thing you can try. Tap it with an eraser head of a pencil. New pencil is best so as not to scratch or mar the screen. Tap it to a degree that you see a white-ish flash ring ripple on the screen. Then you know you are tapping hard enough. Start gentle at first and increase tapping force until you see that ring I was talking about. -
-
It's green, so I guess it's a stuck pixel. I'll try the tapping method you mentioned and see if that works. Thanks.

Edit: (WOW this thread is now 100 pages!)
Anyway I insist we should collect all the basics in one post to be made "sticky" - Including links for drivers, workarounds for common problems, list of bags that fit the HDX... As cool as it is to have this many pages, most of them are quite redundant and 2.0 is probably starting to go nuts, being the dude who tries to help everyone... Then again maybe page 100 is a good place to resume all that! -
I hope this is a good idea, any new user with problems can just be directed to page 100 of this thread instead than repeating the same things a million times: Maybe the Administrators will decide to make this sticky, of course feel free to correct any mistake...
HDX DRAGON BASICS:
This is a great machine and its users are usually extremely happy with it. The screen is huge and absolutely beautiful and the sound is probably the best around. It doesn't heat up much and the fans are rather quiet. It's conceived for Windows VISTA and although XP can be installed on it, certain functions will be missing and drivers will be hard to find. It's a heavy machine: 7KGs = about 15pounds.

RAM can be updated up to 8GB but you cannot utilize RAM faster than 667mhz.
It just has some minor driver issues regarding the blue led console, that can be easily fixed by downloading drivers.

WARNING:
Some people reported problems when downloading the Quick launch Critical security update - It seems to disable certain buttons. When I did it I had to work hard to find a fix: download the driver I mention under "Quick Launch" : it should help.

Some graphic drivers:

As 2.0 points out "If you want to get adventurous, d/l winrar so that you can look into the softpak to read the .inf files to see if the 8800M GTS is listed. The new HDX 16/18 will have Nvidia drivers and perhaps they may be list the 8800M GTS in the .inf."
Since the HDX has now been discontinued we'll have to find our own drivers looking around like that from now on (if we REALLY need newer drivers that is!)

QUICK STUFF GLOSSARY (all these Quick-names are confusing for everyone)
Quick Play = Is a program to read media content that can be controlled by the HDX console or through the remote control.
You MUST go through the driver update in order to get it to read Blu Ray DVDs. (just start Quick play and follow the procedure).
---
Quick Touch = The volume and the Treeble\Bass control buttons on the console.
Note: The On Screen Display often gets in conflict with other programs and it is therefore advised to disable it - by typing msconfig in the "RUN" command of the START menu. and then unchecking the OSD option in the SETTINGS tab. The volumes will still work, you just won't get any OSD and the button won't make any sound when pressed - Personally I decided to uninstall the driver in the control panel instead. That way the buttons still work AND I do get a sound when pressing them: the windows EXCLAMATION sound which is trying to tell me it can't find the driver (the good thing is that it can be customized, of course).
---
Quick launch = The 3 buttons on the extreme left of the console which are supposed to launch Quickplay -
If they stop working , download this driver (which is not originally for the HDX) it works and fixes them - (It also fixes the eject button and certain remote control functions).
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp38001-38500/sp38171.exe
---
CONSOLE KNOWN ISSUE\SOLUTION
A known workaround for a problem with the blue led console, consist in removing the power cable and the battery, and keep the Power button pressed for about one minute in order to discharge all electricity - after that the battery can be re-inserted and the laptop can be powered. Some users managed to get the console to work again that way ( a BIOS refresh of some sort?) -
eto1976 at page 305 of this thread suggests that the above tricks works because by turning the HDX face down some internal elements go into place (a double adhesive tape which is suppose to hold the leds up) - In his post he describes how he dismounted the HDX to fix the tape (37 screws!!!) -
---
RECOVERY:
The partition on HD E: is the recovery partition - it is suggested to get the PC in basic working conditions and then make recovery disks (it will take 2-3 DVDs) - I believe the machine will refresh the data on partition E: as well when doing so - Watch out you can only make ONE set of DVD so don't mess it up during disk creation and don't lose your DVDs.
NOTE: On VISTA Ultimate you can also make an image of your whole PC - That will be a HUGE image (150GB in my case, after installing all my software) _
___
MAKING THE SECOND HD BOOTABLE:
2.0 figured out a way to do that it's post #2780 on page 278 - of course it HAD to involve a screwdriver and sound terribly complicated otherwise he just wouldn't be our 2.0, would he?
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=169232&page=278
****
It is advised to clean up the fans about once every 3 months - This is how 2.0 suggests to proceed:
"Most thorough way to do it is to remove the rear cover (which also requires removal of the hinge cover), use a vacuum or compressed air on the radiator grills while holding a fan blade to the respective fan so it doesn't spin from the suction of the vacuum or blast of compressed air. Then use a Q-Tip with a little alcohol to clean the caked on dust on the fan blades.
Pages 52-54 of the HDX Service guide.
One thing about a vacuum, some vacuums can produce static electricty. So make sure you watch what you are doing (stay on plastic parts or hover above vent grills using hand on underside to create better suction if attachment is metal) and only use vacuums with plastic nozzles and not metal attachments."
****
Remember to CALIBRATE THE BATTERY about once every 6 months in order to avoid battery related problems:
FROM HP SITE: "A calibration cycle requires that the battery be completely charged and then completely discharged. During the calibration cycle, the power management properties must be disabled to allow the battery to completely discharge."
The exact procedure is described here:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...hk&product=3547191&os=2100&rule=33190&lang=en

BACKPACKS & CARRYING CASES
BACKPACKS:
HP
They used to make a roller bag\backpack - I can find pictures of it on the net, but it never seems to be available. There have been rumors of them making a new bag just for the HDX, but it's been a while now and still nothing.
http://www.shopping.hp.com/product/notebook/notebook_hp/carrying_cases/1/accessories/KD853PA
ALIENWARE
I have ordered this backpack from Alienware:
http://www.amazon.com/Mobile-Edge-Alienware-Aurora-Backpack/dp/B000UCDA6Y/ref=cm_cr_pr_pb_i
It fits the dragon P-E-R-F-E-C-T-L-Y it really feels and looks like it was made for it! Unfortunately my camera is broken, and I can't take pictures of it, but trust me this bag is really good because it is exactly the same size as the HDX, plus you can fit a few extra things in it. It feels as strong and well made as a camping backpack.
ILUGGER
Asuhoru has posted pictures of his Ilugger bag\backpack on page 76 of this thread - It looks very big and he says it feel very safe, although it was designed for a Imac.
REGULAR BAGS
Actually recently several 20" bags have hit the market. This is an Amazon page from France where you can see a few:
http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000OUS8LO/kelkoo-consumable-21/ref=nosim
They all seem to have more or less the same design. I have only seen the Targus one in person and it looks fine, but I still prefer a backpack.
THE SLEEVE
There is also "The Sleeve", although it looks a little too thin for my tastes, it definitely looks good:

Last but not least I made a couple of wallpapers using the original HDX as template (I don't claim copyright on these obviously, so if they complain I'll remove them no prob)

when u lucky hdx owners take your hp dragon out into public, what reactions do u get?
-
Thanks, Black Knight. That was much appreciated.
Now to make sure that your good deed does not go unpunished . . .
I see that HP sells restore disks for $19. Has anyone gone with those instead of making their own? I'm not sure I have the intestinal fortitude for that process. -
TheOriginalGiga Notebook Consultant
Hi all, I'm new to the forum so please forgive me for my long winded post. I've been looking into Laptops to replace my old one which suffered an untimely death in a motorcycle accident. I keep circling back to the HDX9494NR due to the powerhouse graphics card and the plenty of RAM it comes stuffed with but I have a couple questions on the construction and other features of the laptop.
Since I'm a tech student, I need a laptop that can handle running multiple virtual machines at once while still being able to function fairly quickly. the secondary use will be for gaming because I'm way too lazy to pack up my desktop when I go to a friends place. In your opinions of this or similar model owners do you feel this has enough power to match my needs?
I notice that this laptop has a rather unique design for a hinge, has anyone had any troubles with it? are there any structurally weak points on the chassis? I'm not very easy on my equipment and I'd like something that lasts a couple of years before it's untimely death.
As I've stated above, I ride a motorcycle, so in order to carry this around I will need a back pack. I did read Black Knight is the expert in this field, but this question is for any who can answer it, what is the most sturdy laptop you've seen that will fit this beast in it and plenty of other objects (external Hard drive, PSP, school book, quantum slipstream drive)?
Hopefully soon I can join the elite group of owning a HDX, assuming it can survive me.
Thanks all. -
I'm not sure if this will help you, Giga, because you asked about a backpack, but on the previous page, DSGerard identifies the Dicota MultiGiant (19-20in) Case, available from Amazon, as a good choice. That's the one I'm likely to get.
-
TheOriginalGiga Notebook Consultant
Thanks, that does look like a very good case, I'm not sure how safe I would feel with a single shoulder strap on this laptop while on a motorcycle. it may be a secondary case for me though.

hey guys.. i'm new here.
I was one of the lucky HDX dragon contest winners.. so i own a 9399 series. I'm having a problem getting the eject button to work on the quickplay buttons... i've read alot of problems with it, does anyone have ideas for a fix? -

Hey guys, I just signed up on this forum after reading through many pages of the HDX thread. And wanted to see what you guys thought of this setup?? I'm almost 100% sold on buying it through newegg for $1599.00, and would be ordering it by the end of this month. It will mostly be used for movies, internet, email, word processing, music and a few occasional games. Please let me know, and thanks
