Congratulations on the purchase! Glad you're happy with it. I was wondering if you could answer a small inquiry? How did NewEgg package the laptop/components? Was it HP's professional boxing, as in this review, or was it NE's typical "throw everything into a box" method? Thank you in advance!
-
Newegg's HDX was packed in the HP retail box. Newegg put the HP box inside a brown box with wadded-up paper around the HP box. The brown box was beat-up a little but the HP box was just fine. BTW, I had no dead or stuck pixels....

I purchased it from Newegg as well and except for the slight mishap on UPS's side the laptop and it's box came to me unblemished, in a brown box with the professional HP box inside just as Alan's did.
@alan: I didn't get enough interest in hard drive cages to buy the 10 pack, I had 2 people contact me and I needed at least 8 people to warrant doing it. Sorry. -
My ambient room temp never exceeds 68 deg F.
I usually keep it around 64 - 66 deg F.
I've got a VERY low body tolerance for heat (and yet, I live in Georgia?!?) -
I'd buy one or two of those HD cages off of you.
Maybe you should think about floating this idea/offer a bit longer.
Looks like new HDX users are showing up in here everyday.
I think your idea is a solid winner and I'll pony up whenever you are ready. -
Another little tidbit...
Sound Volume boost:
Right click speaker in tray. Select playback devices. Speakers and redirected headphones. Properties.
Click enhancements tab. Click Loudness equalization.
Use the "preview button" to see the difference with Loudness EQ on and off.
Nice, right? -
Well, I cycle in this heat so when I get back, 78 feels like Christmas. If I came back to a house that was 65, I'd probably catch pneumonia. -

Hey guys,
HDX owner wannabe here. Firstly, awesome forum & HUGE THANKS to everyone who's been so helpful. I'm crossing my fingers that HP will put those $250 software savings they always seem to have towards something else so that I can finally take the plunge. Unfortunately, it might never happen.
On another note, does anybody speculate that the HUGE price drop may be due to that Nvidia chip? Hmmm.....
Lurking with envy -
Hey all,
I have another small question. The HDX I'm looking at on Newegg comes with 1 320GB HD. I would like to purchase another 320GB HD at the same time to have 2 320's.
I have read that the HDX requires a bracket to fasten the HD's in place. Would an extra bracket come with the HDX (as a spare part or already in place in the second bay)? Or do I have to schill out another 100 bucks or so for the HP one?
I've also gotten some mixed reviews on whether the HDX supports RAID or not. I have seen some people say absolutely not, and others say it definitely does. Are there certain model numbers that do not support RAID or what is the deal there?
Thanks again for your time and suggestions!!
This is a fantastic forum!!! -
Well My gpu is going pretty much idle except for some web surfing between 43-50c. Yet the left hand side of the palm rest is very warm to the touch. I know I have asked something similar before but it seems the gpu has gone up a few degrees since the last time I wrote. Anything I can do to cool it down even a little bit?? Also the fans must be very quiet because I haven't even heard them kick on once yet.
Thanks!!
Z-man.
Also I have a process in startup programs called "RAID Event Monitor" does this mean my computer supports raid?? -
Hey Giga,
I'll buy a bracket too!! Mi new HDX showed up today. Making my 2 sets of recovery disks then off to the store. Had a 9010 before so hopefully I'll see a little difference as this one has way better video card. CPU is little bit slower tho. LOL I'll survive.
Anyone wondering about NewEgg, DON'T, they have always packaged well. Mine came with 2000 peanuts and HP box.
For those looking for a bag there are 3 main choices. (maybe someone that remembers the pages can link them all).
1. They are the Dicota Multigiant from PC connection for about $40.00. I own it. Very nice!! Room for quite a bit of other stuff in outer pockets, plus roomy inside notebook compartment. Made for 19/20" notebooks.
2. Second is the HP rollerbag, very nice if you take yours with you often.
3. Third is the Alienware backpack!!! WOW the pics look great, if you move it medium amount or need extra packing space. I may get it for times when I need more than just my Laptop.
For new owners checkout the HP out of the box Guide for a new lappie. Check out links halfway down PAGE 2 of this forum. Great way to start. Also whoever asked about listing the recent set of forceware drivers and Windows updates that we DO need had a good idea, I just know them yet. I'll check back later for necessary updates.
Happy Day all HDX owners. And if you on the fence, I tried to prove there was a different notebook out there that could compete with HP on size, beauty of screen, power of CPU, power of GPU, available ports for everything but kitchen sink, and lastly PRICE. NADA, nuttin, no way!! IT ain't out there!! So stop waiting and get yours before they stopp sellin them. BTW if you are wiating for HP site to be roughly equal to NewEgg build, keep waiting, they get within $150.. on their VERY BEST coupon but no closer than that.
Anyway thanks all for a great friendly helpful forum. Been here since page 55. WOO HOO.

So to all you out there who were thinking about getting one, PM me and if I get enough people by the end of next week I'll order the bundle. For those of you who have said that you'd buy one but didn't PM me, please PM me, this forum moves so fast it'll take me a good hour to go through all the posts for the day and I don't want to miss anyone. It will be approximately $10 a cage.
As for RAID, it is a definite, absolute, cold hard fact that the HDX9494NR does NOT support RAID. -

Hey, you guys are lucky, mine was shipped in the HP box, with the UPS stickers just thrown on top of it (exactly like the New Egg user review said). LUCKILY the box was not damaged in any way, and my HDX is perfect.
PS, I love my HDX, its is a an absolute BEAST. Sound is amazing, screen is amazing, fingerprint reader is awesome. LOVE IT! -

I saw BIOS update F.39 mentioned earlier and thought I'd mention that my Belkin Nostromo N52 quit working after the update!
Whenever the N52 was plugged in, Vista 64 would freeze for a couple minutes and then BSOD.
I tried uninstalling/re-installing the N52 driver, and plugging it into all USB ports including the 1.1's on my keyboard.
The fix was to revert to BIOS F37E.
If you are having trouble with Vista 64 and the problem appears to be caused by a USB device attached to your HDX, then try reverting to an earlier BIOS.
This has been a public service announcement. -
I am on my fifth go-around with it, and really only play it every now and then. Team Fortress 2 is my regular stress reliever.
Can't wait for Far Cry 2 and Stalker: Clear Sky to hit the shelves! -
-
Alright I have a question for you guru's. I just did a clean install of Vista Ultimate 64. I have everything working except 1 of the Quick Launch buttons. the one for TV. All other buttons work. Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions?
-
LOL, I like that "public service announcement."
Haven't seen any problems. I have a Wacom Bamboo tablet, Logitech MX revolution, Thermaltake keyboard, Axim X50V, Logitech HUb, 4GB Kingston Data traveller, Logitech rumble pad II, HP J6480 Printer all connected to USB with F39 BIOS installed.
Wonder why the Nostromo doesn't work. -
Some say it's caused by static electricity build-up and you can try fixing it by unplugging the power supply, pulling the battery out, and holding the power button for 30-seconds, then put it all back together.
That didn't work for mine, and neither has any of the drivers I could find.
Others say a Microsoft update could break the eject button but I am not sure which one. -
I have a Logitech first gen G15 keyboard, MX-518, police radios, and a bunch of other USB devices plugged in and they worked fine on F39. The N52 just didn't like it, even with nothing else plugged in. -

The Critical Security Update for Quick Launch Buttons is what stopped my TV and Eject button working. I finally did a full restore on a second SATA drive to verify if it was hardware or software. On a fresh restore all of the buttons work again. By manually moving the original Quick Launch Button driver from the restored drive to my original drive I was able to recover functionality of my TV button, but not my eject button yet. It does seem to be a software problem though and though I think there may be some issues with static electricity, it has been very staticy here this last month and it has not affected the buttons at all. The HP help desk also went down this road with me and when the static fix did not work they suggested a hardware failure and I should send it for repair. I tried the restore first however and verified it was software as I suspected. HP did send me a new set of restore disks however to see if they would fix it for me. I have not tried them yet, the problem being to get a single driver off of them. I believe with an installer for the original driver it might be possible to fix the issue altogether, though the Quick Launch Button driver is suspiciously missing form the Recovery Manager drivers to restore or from SwSetup, so I suspect it is bundled in something else or just simply embedded in the Windows image. Either way it does not appear to easily accessible and it is not on the HP website (not that version of the driver anyway). On page 100 (I believe) of this thread there is a version of the driver that has fixed this button issue for many folks so you may all want to try it. It did not work for me, though prior to trying it I had tried several other versions of the driver and I am sure they did not uninstall cleanly and remnants are left in the registry and perhaps the Windows folders. I am at a point now that I believe it is probably a missing or extra registry setting that I have or the eject button is actuall handled by one of the other original drivers that I have not tried going back to the original version with. I will at some point in the near future try a complete rebuild on my other drive and test the buttons after each app or driver install and try to figure this thing out completely. At the moment though I have spent enough time on it and have some projects I must finish first.
Look at Black Knight's post on page 100 however as that driver may fix your problems. -
I knew about the security update before hand and steered clear of it. The problem at first was that none of the Quick Launch buttons or the eject would work. I used the drivers on page 100 and that is what got all but the TV button working.
I will try a few more things when I get off work. I think now that they are mostly working I will try using the original driver. Maybe being kick started by the drivers on page 100 will get things working. -
I really like this HDX DTR, this forum and I will buy one on Monday. Unfortuntely I cannot configure HDX in my country and my time is too short to read all 160 pages. Therefore I have to buy fixed configurations. The main difference is the display (1680x1050 and 1920x1200) here. As there is a big price gap (400€ or 600$) between the cheapest 1680x1050 (T8100, 3GB, 320GB) and the only one with 1920x1200 (T8300, 4GB, 640GB, blueray) I wonder which one to get. Please help me with the following questions (use cases: watch dvd, blueray, TV and play games next to internet):
Play games (As 8800M might not work with 1920x1200):
1) If I choose 1280x800 (16:10) e.g. in crysis will I have black bars at the top / bottom, left / right or is there a forced interpolation to fullscreen?
2) If I choose 1600x1200 (4:3) e.g. in crysis will I have black bars at the left / right or is there a forced interpolation to fullscreen even with 4:3 resolutions?
Blueray / DVD:
1) If I plug the HDX to my receiver via HDMI, will there be a bitstream pass through for all new HD codes or only DTS / DD? Are 2.1 channels, 5.1 chanels or even 7.1 supported? Limitation by HW (cannot be changed?) or SW (buy update of WinDVD... Power DVD)?
2) If I plug the HDX to my receiver via HDMI, will there be a PCM conversion for all new HD codes or only core DTS / DD? Are 2.1 chanels, 5.1 chanels or even 7.1 supportd? Limitation by HW (cannot be changed?) or SW (buy update of WinDVD... Power DVD)?
3) I presume that via SPDIF you will only have 5.1 DTS or DD?
4) Is there a replacement drive for the DVD-combo by HP which is available in Europe - at least a face plate? Part-numbers? Or do I have to buy a retail Sony 5500 slim drive for 250€?
5) Had anyone the chance to compare 1920 vs. 1650 resolutions in respect to blue ray playback? No store here has the 1920, therefore I cannot compare on my own. No reviews of 1920 resolution one in Europe.
6) Is there more then one supllier for the 1920 display in HDX? Main concern different quality. In the first 14 days I can return it, if it would be the lower quality one. Which ones are built in LG/Philips, AUO, ...?
I want to replace my loud PS3 blueray player but dont want to use sound and picture quality.
Despite the display it seems I can easily upgrade the cheapest one with 2 320GB (7200rpm) for 200€ and with 4 GB (800Mhz) for 100€. Replacement of the CPU is possible according this thread (T9300 about 240€, but I would loose garantuee. Blueray Sony NEC Optiarc BC-5500S Slim SATA costs about 250€. If I upgrade the cheapest I will have better drives, better RAM (800 instead of 667MHz) and the same blueray drive. The main difference, despite costs:
The display! I dont mind to buy the higher resoltion one, if I dont get problems in games.
Please help and advice!

hi guys (uk),
im about to start uni at end of september. I need a laptop and really interested in hp hdx. i like gaming.
my questions is will the t9300 make a big difference to t8100 when playing games?
also are they any reports that hp hdx will be refreshed with centrino 2?
also is it true that nvdia reported problems with their graphics card, will i experience that problem on 8800gts?
thank u

Sorry, it is in German. But graphics are interesting anyway. For most games the gap is small (10%), althoug prices is about 200-300% for CPU only. -
TV programming can scale to fit the screen by using a zoom feature. Same for movies. That's why there's a push for 18.4" notebook screens. They have the correct aspect ratio of 16:9.
Anyway, you'll be able to play more games at higher settings with higher frame rates on 1680x1050 than you would on 1920 x 1200.
The main draw for the WUXGA (1920x1200) is screen real estate. But that means the DPI is smaller. Abnout 30% smaller. There's a reason that almost no one makes a 20" desktop monitor at that resolution.
I say, since you can't upgrade the video card, the best route to go for "future-proofing" is to get the 1680 x 1050. You'll be able to play more games at med to high settings in the near future than you would if you got the 1920x 1200. -
Thanks a lot.
Its a pity. My ZF335D 46" Toshiba LCD TV (1920x1080) can be set to display native PC resolutions (of course with black bars). Therefore you dont have aspect ratio problems and dont loose picture quality by interpolation.
Unfortunately I could not try TV-application in store, as there was hardly any terrestric reception. Hope it looks good anyway.
If I playback a 1080p blueray, will there be black bars (= native 1920x1080p playback = HD quality) or interpolation with wrong aspect ratio (worst quality) or will it cut something on rigth and left side (average quality)? Due to interpolation to higher resolution you always loose sharpness and detail picture information. If HP implemented the last two cases, its absolutly an argument not to buy the WUXGA screen for blueray application because quality would not be better then playback on 1650 screens.
In case of dpi vista can the dpi-setting. I checked it on an Asus 17" with 1920x1200 screen. With the higher setting it was fine for me.
Any information on HDMI? I searched internet a lot, but I could not find anything about it. Despite that there is some sort of digital audio on HDMI.
Hope you can help. -
You'll be totally fine with blu-ray on a 1680x1050. No bars, cut offs, or otherwise. Quality would be slightly better on a 1920x1200 screen, but @ 20" your eyes wouldn't be able to tell the difference all that well. Notice how there isn't a single TV (AFAIK) under 40" that has 1920x1200? It would be a waste all things considered. Yet you can watch Blu-ray on a 26" @ 1366 x768 just fine.
Yes, the HDX outputs full digital SPDIF via the HDMI connection.
A clarification: non-HD TV stations will display on the HDX just the way they would on a TV with bars on the sides. But they can be zoomed to fit the screen in the same manner you would with a TV. HD programming doesn't have such problems and fills the screen with the proper aspect ratio. If the program itself is transmitted with black bars, say something whose aspect ratio is 2.35:1 anamorphic, you'll have bars. So it would be with a TV.
The main draw for the 1920 x 1200 is desktop screen real estate. Quality is off course seemingly better because you have more dots per inch. So edges will seems a little sharper. But not to an everyday noticeable difference.
My opinion, it's not really worth the money at this size. I've seen 17" in lappies with 1920 x 1200 and I ask myself, "why? Just because you can, doesn't mean you should." But I guess if one works up close to the screen, it's all good. I prefer to sit back in a nice ergonomic position. -
It's all personal, I suppose. I read a LOT of ebooks and have an ungodly vast collection that'd make the Library of Congress weep. I want my text PERFECT.
Eagerly awaiting the Kindle 2.0 (hopefully it'll be out later this year....... hopefully....)
**EDIT** -- My old Inspiron had a 1600x1200 screen, not a 1920x1600. Durrrr -
But you can turn down a lot of in game graphic goodies and not worry too much at native resolution on 1900 x 1200, simply because the extra pixels do as you say, make it look sharper naturally. If folks aren't into maxxing out frames and just have settings make the game playable(i.e. 30+), then there are still lots of games that will play nice at max resolution. And as rumba said, if that isn't good enough, then you can reduce the resolution, but shouldn't have to for many games...yet. -
Thanks Rumba and 2.0!
Good to hear HDX blue ray playback is done with native resolution, which should be sharper than interpolation to the lower resolution 1680x1050. That's one more point pro HDX9480eg with 1920x1200 resolution.
Despite display resolution issues I want to try connection of HDX and my 46" LCD-TV for one reason: Loudness. My PS3 (40GB version) delivers very good picture and sound quality but the fan gets "loud" after about 45min. In my opinion too loud. I asume the HDX will be the calmer Blue ray player. I dont know which player will deliver better picture quality:
PS3 or HDX with SW-player WinDVD or PowerDVD. Both connected via HDMI
Can anyone compare?
Right now my old receiver is not prepared to decode HD-codes, therefore right now I use standard DVD DD/DTS 5.1 signal of PS3 via optical SPDIF signal. But in future (this or next year) I will have a HD capable receiver. I would be happy if the HDX can passthrough Dolby digital plus, DTS-HD and Dolby True HD as bitstream signal. Can anybody with an HD-receiver confirm this.
The HDX HW should not be capable to do decoding to 5.1 or 7.1 PCM signals but I am not sure. I dont know if it can be done by SW-players.
Back to available HDX configs in Europe-Germany, which I can choose:
HDX 9320: 1249€
1680x1050 display
T8100
3GB RAM
320 GB (2x 160GB)
DVD-Player
Must upgrades:
1x Seagate Momentus 7200.3 G-Force 320GB SATA II (ST9320421ASG) + 130€, the replaced 160GB will fit in PS3]
1x Sony NEC Optiarc BC-5500S Slim SATA + 250€, if it can be used what I dont know // maybe eSATA Version with Plextor PlexWriter PX-B300SA SATA + 150 €
Total: 1630€ or 1530 with external Blueray Player.
HDX 9350: 1499€
1680x1050 display
T8100
3GB RAM
500 GB (2x 250GB)
Blueray / DVD combo Player
Must upgrades: 1x 320 7200 rpm drive + 130€
Total: 1630€
HDX 9480: 1619€
1920x1200 display
T8300
4GB RAM
640 GB (2x 320GB)
DVD-Player
Must upgrades:
1x Seagate Momentus 7200.3 G-Force 320GB SATA II (ST9320421ASG) + 130€, the replaced 160GB will fit in PS3]
Total: 1750€
Conclusion: Price is always more or less the same, but in one case I have HD display and in the other case I have the 1680x1050 one.
HDX93xx:
Pro:
Better native gaming performance with 1680x1050
Contra (due to display):
No native blue ray playback, but above 1m - 2m distance its not important
less sharp Vista usage
HDX9480:
Pro:
Native gaming performance
less sharp Vista usage
Contra (due to display):
Lower performance in native gaming
Interpolation in non native gaming (1440x900, 1280x800, 1280x1024) resulting in less sharp pictures
Wrong full screen interpolation in non native gaming (1280x1024, 1024x768) resulting in "widened" pictures
If there would not be the gaming interpolation issue I would go for 9480, as I dont mind to play with black bars and smaller picture (on 20" it would have been still big enough).
Unfortunately I cannot see both screens on my own.
Difficult decission.
36h left until order? I want to order now and use my remaining holiday for first configuration and try outs ...(it rains in Germany all the time)
Any other advice? -
Hmm what am I playing or want to play in near future:
Crysis (1280x800 at mid details sjould be possible, maybe even 1440x900)
CoD4, Battlefield 2, Stalker (1650 should be possible, 1920 ??)
FarCry2 (??)
Operation Flashpoint 2 (??)
Oblivion and other comparable games
As I am travelling each weekend to my girlfriend, I prefer a heavy DTR instead of one Notebooks and two powerful desktops.
@Rumba:
T8xxx and T9xxx have the same TDP of 35W
X9000 TDP of 44W
P8xxx and P9xxx ZDP 25W
I dont get your temperature point.
My last on 162 post was too long. Please advice. You are a great help. -
Hey! I have an Axim x50V also. Too bad the graphics chip didn't pan out as all that useful. But the 640 x 400 display sure did beat the 320 x 200 of the generation prior. I also had a Dell Inspiron 8100 & 8200 @ 1400x1050. looked great to me. I've seen the 1600 x 1200 15" screen that they offered at the time. Fonts were a bit too small. Yes, you can adjust DPI but doing so isn't all that great for every program as sometimes they don't scale well. It would seem that most programs are made for 96 or so dpi.
Anyway, depends on how close you sit to the screen. 2 ft away, and one might wish they opted for the higher reso. furth back and they only thing one notices is the extra real estate. -
The other thing is, if you're scaling down a game, the higher the monitor reso and the lower the game resolution, the worse it'll look. Then you'll have to use Anti-aliasing. And that uses more processing power. The goal in gaming is of course frame rates and to play as close to native resolution as possible as that looks best. And when you buy a game, you want to be using and seeing as much of the "eye candy" as possible. The lower the resolution you play at, the more "eye candy" you can employ.
It's nearly invariable that you'll get more FPS @ 1680 x 1050 than you'll get @ 1920 x 1200 at the same settings. In some cases already, that makes the difference between playable and unplayable. In a year's time, it'll be all the more pronounced. You'll turn off a lot less graphic options @ Wsxga+ than you will @ WUXGA.
Anyway, also keep this in mind: the grand majority of desktop monitors in the 20-22" range is 1680 x 1050. It's pretty much an industry standard. 24" starts the 1920 x 1200. -
In practice, this is not yet true with the HDX WUXGA and today's most demanding DX10 games (at full antialiasing and max settings). Perhaps this is also one of the advantages of having an X9000, as it adds about 350-400 extra 3DMark06 points to the average non-X9000 HDX score for the same NVIDIA driver version. -
I absolutely LOVE my Axim! Got the Belkin Thumbboard for it, large battery, nice case, bluetooth GPS, the works!
That PowerVR chip in the Axim really does help -- especially with PDFs -- I like how it takes over a heavy screen load.
Actually, I do sit quite close to the screen. As I said, to me (just a personal opinion) -- resolution is everything. -
Hello,
in an german i posted the interpolation issue, too. They claimed it can be configured in the nvidia driver, if you want fullscale interpolation at lower resolutions then the native resolution. But I dont know yet if it was a HDX owner or not. Everything very confusing. maybe its a HW & SW issue.
Does anyone know if the new P9500 or 8600 works in HDX mainboard? 25 TDP! X9000 is too expensive for me. P9500 has 2,53 GHz, 6MB Cache, 25W TDP, 45nm and costs "only 250€".
Best regards,
Alexander -
Nope, the P series is not compatible with the HDX. Only the T and X series are. That includes the new Centrino2 T series like the T9600(2.8ghz), x9100(3.0ghz) and likely the Q series quad core. Only thing is, the FSB will down clock from 1066 to 800mhz which means the clock speed multiplier will also drop a bit... and they won't be properly supported in BIOS. But that shouldn't be an issue other than not reporting the CPU speed correctly in BIOS.
The HDX uses ICH8M chipset.
Here's a list from Intel of supported Penryns:
http://ark.intel.com/brandinfo.aspx?codeName=26543
One quick note about X series: you can't overclock them in the HDX. So if you go that route, just keep that in mind when it comes to price/performance ratio. The T9300 (2.5ghz) is the best bang for buck. -
I hate to sound like an idiot, but what model HDX do I have??
My sticker on the bottom says:
HDX9300
p/n: KR835AV
My BIOS is F.36. I'm wanting to update, but HP doesn't list an "HDX9300".
I've got the T9300 CPU, and the motherboard is listed as a "30E2".
So, what model HDX do I have??? What other information do you folks need to assist me?
Thanks!
**EDIT** -- The HP "auto detect" utility crashes IE (regular) and goes into an infinite installation loop of the ActiveX control with IE-64bit. -
Or you can run this page an let it automatically figure out what's best for you:

Hi 2.0,
thanks again. Can you state something to the interpolation & Nvidia driver issue. Hope you are not upset by my interpolation questions. I am not sure because I believe Interpolation is in most cases done by monitor electronics.
My last hope!

Alexander
