Installing drivers for hard drives? Can you explain in greater details?
-
That is odd. Have you messed with the different sound settings? I haven't received mine yet, so can't walk you through.
-
GTA IV is very very bad and horrible optimized.
I have bought the HP HDX16t 1060ED
specs
-Intel C2D P8400 2.26GHz, 1066FSB 3MB L2
-16inch Full HD 1080dpi 1920x1080
-nVidia GeForce 9600M GT 512MB DDR2
-Windows Vista Home Premium x64
-4GB RAM DDR2
GTA4 lagss like a death slow olg grey dog.
averager FPS is 10.04.
Ingame 5 FPS
How could this happen?
I use this drivers:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook_drivers.html
Vista Home 64bit
Could anyone please help me out?
EDIT
I see many users have this notebook too
Thats great, notebooks on the top! -
Finally had a chance to try this and it does work but the picture was stretched out horizontally. When I tried to fix it thru the NVIDA panel it went back to having black around border.
When I set it back to 2 monitors the laptop and external monitors flickered and changed several times before settling back in my normal config. -
Andy great news
That's what the forums are about. -
Yes, I know. So what is my next move? I'm back to square one. Is it too much to ask that a monitor that has a native resolution of 1920x1080 actually use the entire 21.5in screen when driven by a native 1920x1080 device?
Do I just sit back and wait for Acer to come out with a driver? (And hope it works!) -
You guys have me scared now... better check out my drive.
-
Install 179.28 off Nvidia's site. Enter nvidia control panel (right click desktop), and on the left you'll see "manage custom resolutions". I put in 1366 x 768 and 1600 x 900. You can add more like 1440 x 810 if you want, but you must make sure it's a 16:9 ratio.
Have you tried cloning the standard drive to the new one with a usb or esata enclosure? Curious myself, since I'm waiting for the new 7200.4 500GB drive. -
I purchased an HDX16 about two months ago.
I love it!
Thinking about upgrading from 3 gb to 4 gb ram off newegg, and wondered which ram stick works best.
Not entirely sure if I will upgrade, as I am running Fallout 3 at high settings smoothly!
Even got this hooked up to my HDTV, barely any hassle once i figured the best resolution to go on! -
Hey guys,
I'm looking to get this laptop and was wondering what you think of this set-up: it's $1699.99 but $1297 with the 30% discount
Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor P8400 (2.26 GHz)
16.0" diagonal High Definition HP Ultra BrightView Infinity Display (1920x1080p)
FREE Upgrade to 3GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm) from 2GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
Webcam + Fingerprint Reader with HP Imprint Finish (Fluid)
HP Color Matching Keyboard
Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card
Blu-Ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW Double Layer
No TV Tuner w/remote control
6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
Is the Intel T9400 (2.53GHz) worth the extra $200? Should I wait a while longer to see if the prices go down? I love the lappy, but I'm not in a real hurry to buy quite yet.
Someone suggested a Sony FW but I read comments that it doesn't really play @ true 1080p (or something like that) even though it has the little sticker that says it does. I've read a lot of the posts on this thread and for the most part, you all seem pretty happy with it and I fell in love with it the first time I saw it so I went for this one. What are your complaints about it, if any? -
That's close to the configuration I ordered. But I need mine now. If you're in no hurry to get one, you could play the waiting game and see if prices come down even further due to the economic climate and/or you can get better components. Of course, the 30% coupon could expire and not be reinstated for weeks or more. The only thing I wish I could have gotten is the P9500, the 2.53Ghz processor with 6mb of L2 cache and runs on 25W.
-
hey ya
Im not sure if this has been covered before, but i have recently experimented installing various OS's onto my external USB 2.0 and also ESATA drive, with good success, but although the drive is recognised by the BIOS and allows booting from it when connected via USB2.0, the BIOS does not see it, nor allow the drive to be booted from when connected via ESATA.
Connectivity by Esata within Vista causes no issues, it is the ability to boot an OS from it that is the problem
This MUST just be a BIOS limitation, since so many other computers allow the BIOS to recognise Esata drives and allow booting.
Whats the score? I want SPEED for my external drive OS booting
anyone else?
cheers

Hi Everyone,
1st post. I just got my HDX16t on 1/2/09 (ordered on 12/24/08). not bad at all with build date and shipping!!
I currently have the P7350. I also bought the T9400 proc and would like to know if it is feasible to upgrade the cpu re: thermal, hsf reliability and of course stability. A lot of people from GeekSquad (bestbuy) are scaring me and telling me its such a high risk to do so. What are your thoughts?
Thanks all.
ps. i Love this notebook!!

No, I haven't. But what exactly is on the hard drive that would cause the machine to lock up like this? Anyways, I just stayed with the original drive and completely wiped it, and installed a fresh Vista. Even with the new Vista installation, it doesn't have any problems. To be honest, this is ridiculous. So if the drive takes the dirt nap somewhere down the road, I'm forced to get a new one through HP instead of being able to go to a retail store and get a new one? C'mon now, even the Macbooks are not even this restrictive.
-
I can't believe this to be true.
A hdd is a hdd. I don't see how HP could possibly be making proprietary hdds for their computers.
-
You're absolutely right, a hard drive should be a hard drive. The question is, why is this laptop refusing to boot up properly with four different hard drives, that I know for sure they all work, but when I put the original one back in, it runs all fine and dandy? I highly suspect this is something at the BIOS level.
-
hey everyone just wondering if anyone has found a solution to the sound distortion from the sub-woofer?
-
I uninstalled IDT and media controls, installed realtek HD 2.14 and haven't had a problem since. Sure the treble/bass controls no longer work, but I tweak the equalizer when listening to music (and use headphones or hook up my klipsch speakers). The laptop speakers have little distortion even at maxed volume.
This doesn't sound too good since I'd like to upgrade the HDD soon... have you tried a newer bios off HP's support site? -
The website shows F.12A, but I have F.13, so I assume I have the latest one?
-
Hi All,
Just joined the forum today. I have been waiting for my HDX 16t since Friday last week. Is it just mine or has anyone else's laptop shipped from Shangai, China?? -
Just yours. Everyone else's ships from Shang hai, China. I think Shangai is that small little riverside town where the US ships disposed electronics components to be recycled and the water and ground is a toxic dump.
Good luck on your HDX16t.
(just kidding, of course...all HP HDX's ship from Shanghai and have to go through Customs, so be patient) -
LOL...My bad. Thanks for the information though!
-
FYI I just posted about a blu-ray and HP MediaSmart problem and solution.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=343503 -
Does anyone have ideas about the switch from my current P7350 to a T9400?
Thanks.
-
I live near San Francisco, CA and after my laptop arrived in Oakland, CA today, they shipped it to Memphis, TN and then shipped it back to Oakland again
Why did they do that? Is there a HP redistribution center in Memphis or something?
-
Yes. It's the main HP home and home office store. I believe all computers go there first that are built outside USA.
-
I purchased my new hp hdx16 last night with the 30% coupon. I can't wait until the 27th or so when it is supposed to arrive.
Anyway, on to my question. I got the xb4 dock but now realize there is no dvi or hdmi port on it. I have a hp lp2475w monitor and really dont want to drive it via vga.
Is there anyone else that is running a digital monitor and how are you doing it? Do I really need the dock if it doesnt have the video port?
Anyway, thanks for your assistance.
Jim -
Usually, it's Indianapolis, IN for customs clearance, and normally, it arrives in the US from Anchorage, AK.
Sounds like yours did quite a trip. No wonder FEDEX rates are so high--all that wasted jet fuel.
-
You run your monitor off the HDMI port on the HDX16t. Just get yourself a DVI --> HDMI cable. Works great. Check monoprice.com for the best cables at the cheapest price.
-
Actually the hp lp2475w has an hdmi port so I dont need to worry about the cable. Do you think the dock is worthwhile if I am running the video from the laptop?
Jim -
To be honest, the HP docks are somewhat lame because they don't give digital video, So, depending on what you have to plug and unplug everytime, they can still be a time saver. If you've got mice, keyboards, printers, network cables, etc., to hook up everytime, then a dock is good. You just have to plug in your HDMI cable each time.
-
I have two additional questions for the group. I have a verizon pc5750 broadband card. This computer only has an express slot so this card will not work. I know there are some adapters out there to turn the express card to a pc card slot.
Has anyone tried these adapters and will they work on this computer?
Second has to do with the blu-ray drive. I bought the Blu-Ray +/-R/RW with SuperMulti. I am assuing this is a read and write burner? What is the model number and manufacturer of anyone that has this?
Thanks for your assistance.
Jim -
Guys I just got PROBLEM_CHILD my new HDX16 - it's the European version (so bascially no options!) and I having used it for a week or so my only major complaint is battery life which SUCKS.
Is anyone aware of an extended life battery pack for it (HP's site is cryptic to say the least)
Also does anyone know if it can take a larger HDD unit?
Thanks
Billy -
I have the largest HDD available but tried to switch to a 7200 RPM dirve...failed. It will not boot past the HP logo unless it has the original drive. I'm trying to see if others are having problems changing hard drives on their HDX 16 at the moment.
-
Did anybody have trouble creating the recovery discs? Mine keeps failing during the verification of the disc. Could somebody help me please?
-
I am having the same problem with battery life. My setting is on HP recommended and screen is not very bright. All I'm doing is surfing the net and listening to music on itunes. What gives?
-
What are you using? DVD?
Did you format?
The reason I ask is that I had trouble also and had to dump a couple of expensive DVD's. Sony DVD-RW
I went out and bought Sony-R and they worked fine.
I don't know why but they do hold more then the first ones that I tried. -
Hey, I finally got it working. I don't know how it worked though, cos I followed the same steps I did last time. I have been using the DVD+R DL by Memorex, and they work fine.
Oh, and I read the manual and it says that the DVD+RW, DVD-RW cannot be used to create the recovery discs. Sorry that you had to waste some..
-
Just wanted to give an update my DVD burner issues, give my thanks to everyone who helped and some Kudos to HP for resolving the problem quickly (even though they should have picked up the problem in QC before they shipped it to me
)
Anyway, I called the HDX support team last Wednesday night, had a new drive shipped FedEx Overnight and sitting on my door by Friday afternoon, and after five minutes with a screwdriver I was burning discs like a happy camper!
Despite the original QC issue, I have to say that is pretty impressive technical support - so thanks to the forum members for your help and to the HDX team for performing promptly and professionally! -
It will give you a performance boost, but not something you would expect. Also have service manual handy. It has been posted in this forum earlier.
I upgraded my hdd to a Seagate 320GB 7200RPM the day I received my laptop. I haven't had any issues with that. I'll try to remember to check the bios version and report back.
It's quite possible that HP has limited the drive models in the bios update; but I highly doubt it.
The drives you are trying to use, are they already partitioned? Can you list the make model and size. -
Please do. I am trying to put in a Seagate Momentus 7200.3, model ST9320421AS. Yes, it has already been partitioned and I even tried reformatting prior to putting it in.
On another note, what are you guys getting in terms of temperature for the 9600M GT without a notebook cooler? I haven't got a full load temperature yet, but I'm seeing idle temperatures of 60-63C. Looks a bit high to me. -
New BIOS version F.13 just uploaded:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp42001-42500/sp42189.exe
Changes:
- Adds support for Intel P7450, T6400, and T6600 Processors. -
I've got an HDX16 for testing purposes that has the NVIDIA GeForce GT 130M video card. 1500 Mhz Processor speed!
-
I see that they add a Blu-Ray Burner with HDX16. Anyone tried it?
Does it support BD rewritable and lightscribe? -
Well, if you're going to dangle the carrot, the least you can do is explain more!
How did you get those units? Are they from HP with the upgraded parts? What is 1500Mhz...the GPU?
Give some details! -
The shader clock of course
-
WOW!!!
Do tell us all more...much much more... -
Hi xtreme. thanks for the reply! i'm giong to have a certified install the proc for me if anything.. i saw the manual and you basically have to take the WHOLE lappy apart to get to the cpu...
what did you mean exactly by "not something I would expect?" i know I would be sacrificing heat and batt life but is it worth it for the performance upgrade?
-
I have a t9400 in my hdx, and I didn't really see much of a difference than my old laptop which had P4 3.4Ghz. I mean this is core 2 duo, a true dual core vs Hyper Threading Single Core. When you put load on it like video editing, or something that is CPU intensive you can tell the difference, but if you are just browsing internet, listening to music, watching movies, playing games, not that big of a difference.
Of Course, these new processors kick a$$ of old processors, but for everyday normal use, its not worth the money.
If you are going to be Video Editing, or Gaming Heavily, or other CPU intensive tasks, sure upgrade, but if you think that extra 300 or so Mhz is going to give you a boost you think it will; trust me, you won't even feel it.
That may be just my preception, but I use multiple Laptops and Desktops, and for everyday tasks like internet, movies, music there isn't that much of a difference.
I'm basing this on my 3.4Ghz P4 Laptop with 1GB Ram DDR, Pentium D 2.8 Desktop with 2.5GB Ram DDR2, Quad Core Q6600 with 2GB DDR2, AMD Athlon 64 X 2 Dual Core TK- 57 1.8-9 GHz with 3GB DDR2 and T9400.
Again, your non-cpu intensive apps won't see much difference; but video editing, and other cpu intensive apps will see the diff. It's up to you to decide how much your apps put the pressure on cpu. -
just got my hdx16
amazing 1080p screen.
cons so far:
Mouse on high speed is still very sloooww.
the fan keeps running and does not shut off,
coming from a sager that the fan did turn off.
i will be testing games out later today
but looks like a keeper
compared to sony FW and the XPS 16
i had the 30% off coupon so it was a good deal
