LoL! I feel ya lancorp. Btw, how much did you pay for ordering your 2 sticks of 4GB RAM and which brand are they? I had a look at newegg.com but the only ones there are pretty pricey. I was looking high and low to find out whether the HDX-18 supports PC-8500 RAM or just up to a max of PC-6400.

 

It has been determined (for sure), PC2-6400 is the max on the HDX.

Here's the RAM I have, it's good and not pricey.

Yeah...kinda hoping not...I've heard MANY horror stories of HP laptops and Indy Customs...hopefully that's what the 'Int'l Shipment Release' in AK was for...

 

Thanks for clearing my doubts regarding the max RAM speed. What I meant was having a max of 8GB's of RAM (2 * 4GB) like what lancorp is planning to do.

 

Hey lancorp, you do realise that Ryan is probably a moniker such as 'Dr Alcom' (as in 'all doctors come here' but the patients don't get alarmed). I personally can -believe- that there is a -person- called Ryan at HP but, the amount of disparity between his emails (3 of the 'answers' I got about the quad were from him) leads to believe that it's merely a mailbox of sorts (think IMAP folder and you got it)

I know we do that at work a fair bit of the time, it wouldn't surprise me in this case either (oh! and I did put read receipts on all my emails.. not one ever came back to me, but I did get replies

which means.. and I hate to re-iterate here but.. no one is going to get -any- quad from HP. I agree with whoever said it in here last (xaser ? not sure). The quads will 're-appear' when the "problem" has been 'fixed' - and for a heftier sum as well.

 

Anything is possible, but I have gotten personal replies from Ryan to my questions...not just canned boilerplate emails. I've gotten read receipts for every email that I've sent him.

He explicitly stated in an email response to me on Friday that my orders shipped with Quads. So, that's what I'm going with...

 

I have the G.SKILL 4GB DDR2-667 modules (CAS Latency of 5). About the same performance as DDR2-800 CAS 6, so I'm not complaining! You can't beat the price, either! Newegg sells a pair for $300.

 

So what do you expect the upgrade to the Quad Core to cost? Like $500 or more? I can deal with $500 I guess...

 

FYI...Looks like our laptops are most likely due to land in Indy from Anchorage around 1:13am EST...

Yeah, flight tracker currently has it south central Canada at 33k feet and 657mph with rain and 38F

 

Do I want to know how you know the flight number of the fedex flight from AK to IN???

 

pretty easy...only 2 current fedex flights in the air from AK to IN...and one was within several minutes of fedex.com's departure time

Are you sure it's not one of the two flights going to Memphis? A lot of their stuff passes through there as well.

 

not positive...but from what I've seen/heard, a vast majority of hp's stuff goes from Anchorage to Indy... (hence, the 'most likely'...)

Hey CassilineKnight, extrapolating from the $400 USD for a T9600 'upgrade' on the current hdx18t, you can expect that the 'add it now' upgrade price would be more akin to $900 or so I would guess.

Reasoning is this; I can find a T9600 for $615 but the 'cheapest' I can find a QX9300 for is around $1100. This is even before factoring in the whole 'rarity' currently of Quads vs the glut of T9600

I tried to get dell to build me a m6400 with qx9300, and they could have had it to me in 3-4 business days (including ship time amazingly) -except- that the CPU had a 'lead time' (or sourcing time) of 10-14 business days. That pretty much tells me that if dell business have a hard time getting them, so will everyone else. Sucks but.. yeah.

 

Guys, I just got my HDX 18t recently and it is awsome! Only problem is the GPU which is quiet weak compared to the previous models. Is there anybody who can help me to OC the card? I tried Rivatuner (clocks were detected wrongly), nTune (freeze during install), NiBiTor (BSOD during BIOS read) w/o success... Pls. help!

The good news is that I might have them today! Looking back at my HDX20 and HDX16t, both left INDY in the early AM (east coast time) and came straight to San Diego and was delivered the same day!

FEDEX says tomorrow, still. We'll see later this morning when the tracking gets updated.

Update: They're both in San Diego!!

If what you say turns out to be true I'll definitely have to think about it. I do want a nice laptop but in this economy you gotta live within your means. And that much money for one aspect of a laptop is a little excessive at my level.

But oh well we'll just have to wait and see.

I find it amazing how different a route a package can make...And FEDEX finds it necessary to raise rates because of fuel costs? Cripe! If they can obviously fly from AK to CA direct, why did my two go all the way to IN and TN and then BACK to CA???

It doesn't really matter, of course, since they all got here the same day, but it's a matter of principle.

Mine are still at the local FEDEX facility. Not out for delivery, yet.

 

can someone instruct me how to disable the webcam in the HDX18? Apparently I need to do that otherwise my Belkin Docking Station will not install correctly.

LOL the funny thing is that mine went Anchorage -> Oakland -> Portland (where I am). I guess their logistics don't always make complete sense .

I'll probably get mine tomorrow... here's to another day of NOT obsessing! lol.

crap...missed the delivery early this morning (a few hours ago) Now I'm gonna have to drive almost an hour to go pick it up...and they said the truck won't be back til after 7pm (and they close at 7:30pm!)

 

For thr Express Air services, everything goes to their 5 major hubs first (anchorage, oakland, indy, DFW, newark) before being rerouted to other places I guess in your case they dont have an air route from anchorage to portland.

itunes question, im new to vista and can find an ez way to delete duplicate mp3's, too many to manually delete, i guess i shouldnt keep copying songs from file to file!

 

I got mine, it did not come with the quad but I did not expect it, because I unfortunately canceled my previous order and ordered again, when Ryan told me that the quad would not be available, even though I told him I was willing to wait. Oh, well I probable did not need the quad but it would have been nice. It is like wanted a corvet even though you only go 75.

Just got mine too! I just put in my 7200 RPM drive (second will have to wait for a bracket), and I'm installing Vista Ultimate.

First impressions:

- Same super-reflective screen. Hope the Ultra BrightView makes up for it.
- The hard drive bracket is nice and secure
- The design is cool
- The Blu-ray drive door doesn't line up with the case, but it was the same for both my dv7s.

My first impressions:

Looks just like my HDX16t, just bigger. Same (not so)UltraBright display. Complimentary fingerprints all over it from factory workers just back from their lunch break.

Seriously, I'm happy. Like you, it's time to install 320GB 7200RPM and 8GB RAM. I think I will try cloning my HDX16t drive to it since it is already setup with my apps and all...I think the hardware is practically identical...

 

I hope it's just something weird with Vista setup... so far the "2" and "X" keys don't work.

EDIT: It also looks like a lot of the ports are recessed too far... I had a heck of a time getting my ethernet cable plugged in. Grr.

I was just messing around in the BIOS to see if I can find any keyboard settings and the da mn thing was lagging and froze up several times... I think I got a faulty system.

Hey PDX and Lancorp,

Could you guys please tell me how the SCREEN is? How bright it is?

Also, can you test the quality of the keys on the keyboard? Is it silky smooth and easy to type? (ie: light touch as in you don't have to press so hard)

The reason why I ask is my Gateway laptop is HORRIBLE so when I type fast, the keys always seem to miss some letters so I have to go back and fix it.

It's not my typing, it's just the low quality keys..

Nah, after messing around with it I think it was a problem with having my external drive connected via eSATA during boot.

The faulty part... I am unable to type "2", "s", or "x", and I have no idea how to get to the keyboard connector. I'm going to poke around some more.

My first impression of the screen - not bad sitting next to my super-bright and less-reflective dv8000t. The white looks vibrant and the colors are decent, and I might even be able to live with the Infinity screen.

The keyboard keys are nice and big and not too slippery.

 

I hope that's not the case...

 

Anybody know where I might find the maintenance manual? I'm betting that I can fix my keyboard problem if I can get to the connector.

 

To anyone that got the quad today.. care to burn a ubuntu 'live' cd, pop it in, open a terminal and do a 'cat /proc/cpuinfo' ? I am interested in the stepping and revision of the processor (ES or not as well as the attributes (of course it better have vme enabled
