I want to take my 4 GB RAM and turn it into 8. It probably has 2 - 2GB sticks so I need to remove both and get two sticks of 4GB. Is this right or is there more than 2 slots for RAM?

Also, anyone know what type of RAM it uses?

    Thanks

Correct. The least expensive is the G.SKILL stuff on newegg. The '18 used DDR2-800 but DDR2-667 works just as well and is about the same performance due to the latency difference between the two.

Well, this morning, second day, the backlight is totally dead. Tried to reboot 3 times, no go. The screen is on, and the computer works, but no backlight. There is a short hum during startup, something to do with the backlight I suspect, maybe the inverter.

Having used it some more yesterday, I have to say the colors and the screen is just wonderful. The reduced pixels from my previous 1920x1200 isnt' a big deal, not much loss on the verticle real estate. Fan sound is low. Fingerprints eveywhere lol, but it's very pretty. Nothing much else to report.

Nope, three of us. I have a quad core HDX18t as well. I finally recieved it a little while ago after all this time. Though I haven't opened it yet and am wondering if I should consider selling, only because I don't "need" that kind of power, though it is fun to play with and say you have it ;)

Not sure what your bottom line price was on it, but I think you could make a HEFTY profit it on it. Now's the time to do it while HP isn't offering the QUAD. Take that profit and buy something else, making your net cost practically free!

Wow, somehow I've overlooked the latency on that memory all this time. Not bad at all.

My G.SKILL 2x2GB sticks were giving me trouble so they're being sent back to Newegg, and man, having only 2G sucks! lol. After about an hour of WoW, Alt+Tabbing is a nightmare because all the other running programs are swapped to disk. Even compiling some of my larger code projects are a pain... although booting linux helps there ;)

I definitely would recommend a minimum of 4GB RAM for this beast.

Now is FRIDAY 7/NOV/2008 at 10:00 AM PST (California)

I am the proud owner of TWO HDX9300 (aka HDX9700 DRAGON) 20" Laptops completely maxed out with 8GB RAM, Intel Extreme Processor, and TWO 320GB 7200 RPM Drives... with WinVista X64 Ultimate. They are no longer available from HP or anywhere else. I noticed that both DELL and Acer dropped their 20" Laptops in the same month as HP (AUG/2008). They were only on the market 8 months since Christmas time 2007.

I also purchased a new HDX18t-1000 in early OCT/2008. The Intel Extreme Quad Core Processor (9300 @ 2.53GH). Also the 8GB DDR2 RAM Option and TWO 320GB 7200RPM Drives. It included the top of the line components in every category, video, sound, etc.

Even though the 18" laptop is slightly faster and much lighter than the 20", I find myself totally addicted to the 20" (Desktop on a lap !!!).... I knew it was a heavy beast before I purchased it so the weight was/is not an issue. I simply bought a MAC Bag from ilugger.com which accommodates the massive beast for portability.

I am thinking of selling the HDX18t-1000, as described above, since I am not using it much and it is only a few days old. I paid upwards of $5,500 for what is now the MOST powerful laptop ever produced!!!

Is anyone on here looking for such a powerful beast ??? I am located in Southern California. Not looking to market this extensively, but just testing the waters since this beast will not be produced again by HP.

    Thanks.

ROFLMAO. I paid less than $1700 for HDX18t with the quads, 4GB ram, 250GB HDD with all the top options. It does not justify $3800 to upgrade to 640GB HDD and 8GB RAM :p :p :p

Exactly, how are you going to even try to make a profit if at all. And FYI the 18T isn't discontinued with the quads. And lastly, how is a virgin poster going to succeed trying to sell a $5K laptop?

I know 'Yes I Can', but this is over the top.

Usually, someone who touts having something completely MAXXED OUT, with every option usually doesn't have anything, especially when they just pop out from nowhere.

And, as I recall, HP didn't offer an 8GB option, or a 7200RPM drive option, so that's untrue also. Plus, $5500???? If you're going to brag, at least make it believeable!!

Something tells me this guy just needs some attention.

I smell BS with the poster. I bought all the options to include tuner, quad, bluetooth and my end price was $1950ish ($200 instant rebate and 5% from work). If I had purchased the dual 250GB drives that would have been an extra $200 (cable issue), then 8GB RAM from new egg $300 and then 2 x 320 RPM drives for $200ish...thats a total of $2650.

Ok, so i received my Vista ULTIMATE "replacement" disc from HP (even though I ordered it with only Vista Home Premium.
So, is it safe to assume, I can just do a complete reinstall by just inserting the disc... is it really that simple?
this will give me the Vista Ultimate 64 bit, so then I can upgrade to the 8GB Ram...

    THanks for any tips
oh, and another question I had that was buried way up there.. are any of the headphone out ports a S/PDIF? I had that on my Qosmio.
OR is my alternative to use the HP Quickdock which has the S/PDIF.

    Again, THANKS!

I've always thought about this...I thought that ALL Vista versions were the same and that only the product key would unlock Ultimate and it's various versions...

So what does upgrading to Ultimate really mean? Is it possible to just change your product key and get Ultimate?

Hey guys I have a quick question the dual 500 GB for a total of 1TB is that a good thing? I was looking at getting a couple of external drives ( take a lot of pics and other stuff) but seen that options and am now considering this instead what are your thought?

Yes, if you order the correct Ultimate x64 Recovery disc for your hdx18, it's as simple as inserting the disc and boot up from the optical drive.

Dont think the headphone out works as S/PDIF. Another better alternative: xb4 docking station. I have this and it's great.

Has anyone heard anything yet about 3rd party offerings for the HD Caddy for this machine yet? I've emailed a couple places but haven't heard anything back. My HDX18 Shipped a day or two ago. Will hopefully arrive next week. Also ordered 8 gigs of G.Skill for it, 2 500 gig WD drives, 2 Esata Enclosures, and I screwed up and ordered the wrong Notebook cooler. Grrr. Accidentally ordered the Zalman 2000 when I wanted the NXT. Have to see if Newegg will swap it out for me.

Also, the outputs on the HDX18 are not SPDIF. The quickdock is probably your best bet.

I was looking at the Xb4. I have the HP Quickdock, but it did not recognize any of my external HD (maybe a power issue?).
Then I tried to use the Toshiba Dynadock, but SLOOOW and again, trouble with four of the six USB ports.

So, the Xb4 has the S/PDIF out so I can hook that to my Logitech z5500?
I see on the description that "Get excellent sound with the powerful, integrated Altec Lansing 2.1 speaker system"

I assume we are not stuck with that as an only option? THANKS

I've already reinstalled with the Ultimate x64 Recovery disc for the hdx18.

That really is how you feel. He didn't lie to anybody - he just ordered the recovery disc that HP makes available.

Just like they sold me a $3000+ computer for about $1000 because they screwed up on the pricing. Am I a thief too?

Nope, not how I "FEEL"....simple statement of fact....he knowingly ordered The ULTIMATE recovery dvd when he did not order the computer with Ultimate. In your case HP screwed up, made a mistake, he knowingly installed a OS he never paid for...big difference.

It's a recovery disc for HP computers. He has an HP computer. HP screwed up by not checking what OS he ordered.

If you've got such a problem I suggest you take it elsewhere. This isn't a moral debate thread. If you have anything useful to contribute, or any questions about the HDX18, then this is the place. I'm sure there is a forum somewhere else for you to do your name-calling.

I wouldn't call it stealing. I call it a loophole in the vista OEM notebook licensing model. You cannot call it a lie either because HP is not asking you which version you have in the ordering system. It is made available by HP for $16. Someone pays for it. He still bought and paid for his Premium license and only one vista is used at any one time (the premium version is no longer used replaced by the ultimate for $16)

I treat it as bargain shopping if you know where to find the deal.

The truth is : It's "don't ask, don't tell"... Grey zone.

Yes... he is using the recovery software he PAID for ..... $16 ....

HP did not say people cannot order the Ultimate Recovery Disc for $16.
It's not just HP, it's PC industry (Dell, Toshiba, etc) practise to make the recovery disc available for their consumers.

Yeah, it's somewhere around $1100. I wasn't sure if my live.com rebate registered, but a nice support person told me I was using the wrong account to check my rebate, so it's on it's way as well :p

Other than that, I used a $50 coupon (yes, I know the risk with live.com but they reviewed my order and assured me that I am getting cashback), and got refunded 10% + $75 even though I didn't downgrade, which took the place of the price protection discount.

I also got a random email from HP with ANOTHER $50 coupon before my notebook shipped. Saving that for accessories (QuickDock probably).
