I believe that marketing studies were done and they determined that certain prices (such as $19.99 vs $20) and certain numbers in prices (don't know which numbers...) result in higher sales. I think they even found they could raise the price (in order to make use of the "ideal numbers") and sales would go up. Go figure...people are strange animals!
-
Well I'm no match for $billion dollar studies on human nature. I'm sure they are right, and it works. I guess it's wishful thinking for the pennies to disappear...
Did you know it costs roughly 5 cents to create a penny? -
YES, YES, and YES, you are correct in all of your assertions. You install AnyDVD and it just runs from your system tray (background), and defeats the copy-protection, and ClondDVD actually copys the disc.
-
Good stuff! They are lucky too that HD DVD is out of the picture, they can now just focus on bluray...
Can't wait to play with it! -
HEY GUYS NICE HDX 18 CLUB GOING HERE
WELL I JUST GOT MY BIG RIG TODAY. ITS SWEET EXCEPT FOR ONE SMALL THING Thats bothering me are the touch controls for the volume which go way and above what i press

any help to a noob would be appreciated -
electrosoft Perpetualist Matrixist
PROS: Redskins got beat (That's always a good thing)
CONS: It was by the Giants
-
Yes, and remember anydvd, can be used by many other dvd authoring apps. But it's existence is entirely a legal loophole, as copy protection law states (according to what i've read on this subject- in simple terms) that no software can do both decription (including copy protection) and dvd copy functions. That's why they broke it up into 2 separate apps. Genius - god bless them.
-
yeah genius, they get to charge twice!!
-
You can probably tell which side I'm on by looking at which offense is on the field...
-
PowerDVD flawlessly plays blu-ray on my XP HDX18t!
Now if you all excuse me, the wife and I are going to cling tightly to each other and watch the strangers. :O -
Hi all!
So I'm a happy owner of a HP HDX18, or so I thought...
Unpacked and saw that there was a nice big dent in the lower lefthand corner on the keyboard and when I started to boot the machine I noticed severe backlight bleeding on the lefthand side from top to bottom.
Anyone else had problems with backlight bleeding?
Took one day to get it delivered but will take at least a week before I can get a new one after they reviewed the damages
But it sure is a nice piece of hardware, had to try it out before I sent it back
In Sweden we can't choose the Quad, its not even listed...

Hey Guys,
For DVD authoring, or making back-ups, there is another alternative to SlySoft's AnyDVD and CloneDVD. You may want to look at DVDFab.....
(just make sure you try and use the INTERNATIONAL version - U.S. version has been lamed-out!)
With regard to copywrite protection and solid burns, I'd give this s/ware a 99.9% success rate (with burn speeds kept at 4X or less). As with any s/ware of this type, solid media and hardware (and it's firmware) are equally important for success. Also, if you have dual opticals, do not burn 'on-the-fly'...... much better success rates are achieved by reading the image to HD first, and then burning from the HD.
Anyhow I am a former user of SlySoft products, and in my opinion, DVDFab is far superior to the combo of AnyDVD & CloneDVD. Like the SlySoft product, DVDFab is lifetime, has a smarter user friendly interface, is fuller featured, copies a multitude of formats, great support, and is updated constantly (at least once every week or so). Also, it's free to try before you buy!
I have been using DVDFab for nearly two years now....... AND IT BURNS MOST EVERYTHING VERY satisfied..... I give it 5 Stars!
Check it out and ENJOY! -
I've been putting pressure on newmodus.com but if i'm the only one doing it obviously they aren't going to hurry. I keep telling them that there is a growing list of people over here at notebookreview.com that wants to see the hd caddy kit for the HDX18t and last I heard they were going to "get back to me" with an ETA. Obviously they never did.
-
AMEN!!!

Okay, let me preface this with, I KNOW that Big-Time-Corporate CEOs don't make a habit of reading and responding to e-mail, that said, MOST DO pay someone to do it for them.
So late Friday night I sent letters to the Consumerist, Steve Ballmer, and Mark Hurd.
In short I just stated the problems that I had experienced on Friday, and that I was still interested in making a purchase; would they (MS+HP) be able to coordinate a resolution to this issue and extend the 40% CashBack offer, in consideration for the many hours spent trying to take advantage of the promotion?
This is the response I got from Mr Ballmer's office,
Dear Mr...
I wanted to respond to your recent email on your cashback experience. By the way of introduction, I am responsible for cashback search at Microsoft. First and most importantly I want to sincerely apologize that you were not able to connect to the HP cashback deal via live.com on Fri. Please be rest assured we are looking into the issue that caused some of our customers to hit error pages on Fri. We are also looking into options that would enable our valued customers like you to get access to the HP deal / similar deal that you were accessing . I promise to inform you as soon as we have worked out a viable option for this.
I thank you for using live.com as your search engine. Please be rest assured the cashback search errors on Fri were an exception that you wont encounter again as you search and shop using cashback in the future.
Regards...
So, I hope they are taking it seriously and they actually follow through on this. I will let you guys know if and when I get any other correspondences. -

It's not a direct line, but you'll get to the admin secretary closest to Steve Ballmer. If you have a longstanding Microsoft issue that multiple trips to the MS customer service line haven't solved, try pitching her your problems.

Oh, and apparently this one is for Mr. Bill Gates:

Undoubtedly, both email addresses are answered by secretaries. But would you rather your plea be answered by high-level secretaries who can walk across the office and drop sugar in their master's laps, or some guy in India with a laptop powered by a heifer's holy nipples? BEN POPKEN -
. Very much appreciated.

I won't be of much help to you here, but GEEZ, sorry to hear of your misfortune.
Can't you purchase via HP's U.S. website?
Anyhow, regarding the 8gb of ram, I think ' lancorp' made some recommendations in this regard. Search his post........
Good Luck exchanging that lappy...........

ZZZZzzzzzzzz..... [growing impatient, wait'in for another great HP sale]..... Zzzzzzzz........
What do ya think guys? Should I splurge on an Alienware M17, or go for the more economical Acer 8930G-6448?
Zzzzzzzzzzzz...........
-
Eh. I just don't like Acer products, and alienware is just overly expensive.
Anyways, to anyone who has the quad build of the HDX18t: are you satisfied with it? I mean, does it ever run too hot/have you encountered anything that you dislike about it?
I've been contemplating on whether the quad is really worth the extra money. -
I like it but it has run hot not scorching, but hotter than an 18t that I returned which ran a 9400. I think in general, the HDX18t series runs fairly cool for all that is packed in. -
Concerning DVDFAB
That is concerning, no? -
I had many problems getting my order through with constant refreshes. It's now Monday morning and I still have not received a confirmation if this worked. I sent an E-mail to the Cash back group and they said if I don't recieve it by Tuesday to let them know.
Shiney - Could you send me those e-mail addresses you used. I believe I would like to send complaint notes as well. The more people are willing to send them the better chance something will get done.
--Rocco-- -
Just an interesting note, I work for HP and looked up Ryan Presley in the GAL and there is not anyone there so I guess this must be a catch all for the group.
Takes about a business day before I get a response from them but they have been very helpful. -
Update 4: This morning (Monday), HP called to confirm my Black Friday order. Apparently the credit card company denied the BF charges, probably because I very seldom use that card and they were worried that a sudden charge for expensive computer equipment might indicate the card was stolen. So HP called me and asked some questions to confirm my identity. Once that was done, they confirmed the order and sent me a confirmation email. I got on a chat with an HP rep and asked about the MS cashback. They referred me to MS. I asked if they needed to inform MS about the purchase, but they said that all I needed to do is tell MS the customer order number. I emailed MS to confirm that they had the order information and that the 40% discount would be applied to my account. I received a standard email that they would get to my email within 3-5 working days. So, although I don't have a definitive answer about the 40%, at least it is now out of HP's hands and into the lap of the MS cashback crew. I hope that's an improvement. I haven't given up yet!
-
When has it run hot? Like when you're doing everyday tasks? Or were you playing some intense graphics game?
Just trying to get a sense of how often it runs "hots". -
i've got the 8400 in mine and it's definately warm under the left hand.
i will play some half-life2 tonight and see what it does.
my dell vostro got so hot playing half-life 2 i had to return it and apply a balm. -
Below is my email to HP and their initial reply. We will see what happens.
If anyone wants me to add anything that may help, let me know. And by all means, if you support XP, it can't hurt to send an email to "the man" -
I tried www.newmodus.com but it just went to a search page from godaddy.com or something...
What is the name and/or website? -
Out of curiosity, what are you hoping to gain from this? As much as there is definitely a large group of people hanging on to XP, it is by all signs, a dead OS. Microsoft and most vendors are no longer selling it, and in a bit more than 4 months, MS will no longer support it for free. The cost of maintaining support for a certain OS is staggering, including driver development, training, distribution, and support.
Hang on dearly as you will, your scenario puts you into a rather minority group--those that have a single, important use for the PC that only works under XP. To me, it seems like the brunt of the responsiblity should be shouldered by the music software industry to get their software working in Vista. Most everything else works in Vista...is the music software industry just lazy that they cannot overcome whatever obstacles they are coming up on? Seems like you should be writing/petitioning them...
My point is, it shouldn't be HP's responsibility to shoulder the cost to support a legacy OS for a niche group. I'm pretty sure you know that your letter isn't going to make them suddenly support it, even if that is possible. A lot of the hardware comes from other manufacturers who supply HP with the drivers. If they don't support XP, how is HP supposed to? Not to mention, you knew going in that XP was not an option...I don't think you'll get much sympathy from them.
Who knows...maybe I'm wrong and we'll see XP drivers on their site for the HDX18t! Of course, you did have options at Dell for purchasing a notebook PC with an XP "downgrade" direct from Dell. Even a QX9300 Quad Core with XP! Did you look at those? -
^^^Wow I completely agree with you.
XP is dead. Move on to Vista and tell the companies who are still living in the last generation to start designing their programs to work with Vista.
With Windows 7 coming out next year (if it's on track and all) it will make people who cling to XP look even more ridiculous in my opinion.
HP doesn't have to nor should they have to support an old operating system. It's just completely stupid. -
The parts are not available yet in the US yet as the HDX is too new... hopefully a little patience and we who have the HDX18 will get the kit and add our secondary drives soon.
-
Hey, guys -- I'm still struggling with two problems with my new HDX 18t. If anyone has a moment, can you give something a try and see if it's a problem on your end as well?
* Load PowerPoint 2007. Create a couple of slides, and set their transition animations to Fade ( Animations tab on the ribbon bar, second one in from the left). Make sure you have Hardware Acceleration enabled ( Slideshow tab, "Set Up Show" and you'll see the checkbox). Hit f5 and click the spacebar to advance the slide. Does it work? For me, it works if Hardware Acceleration is not enabled (though it looks a bit choppy), but breaks once I enable Acceleration.
I spent some time with tech support today trying to chase this down, and they brought in an engineer from the HDX team as well (who, apparently, is planning on contacting nVidia). Just wondering if this is a universal problem.
* Second issue: I can't get a Blu-Ray Disc to play (specifically "Hancock"). Tech Support had me update my HP MediaSmart DVD software, but still no luck when I drop in the disc. They asked me to try a different Blu-Ray movie, but I don't have any others here (I rented "Hancock" on my way home from work to give it a try today). Anyone else having problems? -
-
Here I am again guys.
Due to the secondary harddrive parts availability, they are scrapping my HDX18T and rebuilding it from scratch. Whoo Hoo for me.
This time I will get the QUAD ! And the Dual 320's will be factory installed.
And they are sending me all available accessories. I got the new Totebag today.
There is a God and he has granted me a little favor.
Thanks
Rob -
Hellboy 2 works perfectly for me... -
-
Dude! What the...??? What were you using, a blow torch! Holy crap!
You'd be better off just getting a replacement keyboard. The keyswitches they use these days are usually the scissor-switch type, and are practically impossible for a human to remove and replace.
A quick look on HP's PartSurfer web site shows the US Keyboard P/N is:
Keyboard [Electronic Parts]
496878-001 Windows 18.4-inch IMR keyboard - With numerical keypad (US)
Hope that helps. -
Thanks lancorp. I guess I'll have to wait until tomorrow to find out how much that costs, they're closed.
It wasn't a blow torch, but my heat gun was on the wrong setting. Instead of 120, which is what I wanted it on, it was on 800. It took less than a second to melt them that far. -
I don't suppose you have the Accidental Damage warranty???
-
Sure don't. One of those things I don't get, as I tend to take really good care of my electronics.
I've had this laptop for over a month now and I still keep the fabric in between the keyboard and the screen when closed.
-
If I were you, I'd be crying in my Jaegermeister right now!
-
Yeah, well I only get three drinks a day right now. So that's about all I can do is cry.
The good news is the buttons the keys used to lay over still function, so it's not a total loss. I took the really bad keys off (del, 0, ->, \/). Now it's so ugly I don't even want to look at it. -
Just.....wow!
Hey, look on the bright side, at least you can still do CTL ALT DELETE! -
Make a note if the keys poke above where they should.. meaning, when you close the laptop, make sure the new melted keys don't poke the screen.
Check your credit card to see if you have accidental coverage. For example, Amex has them automatically for I forget how many months.. 1 or 3. -
That's why I took some of them completly off. Good idea on the credit card thing, I'll check into it.
