^Finally! Someone with the same problem! This has only happened a few times though. Maybe 4 times since I got it 17 days ago. And I've used this laptop a decent amount...

    ziggy123;

I am aware of Trading Idea..yes. I have used it for a while but no more. Instead, I am onto Futures trading this year. Mostly long on ETF and hedging with Futures. I have had a great success with "SKF" a short instruments for financial. It has been an incredible UP's and Downs and riding it on for both direction were real winners for me.

HDX18t with T9600 CPU will serve me fine for my purpose and Quad is something too much..don't you think so? Besides, I don't know if I can handle the heat issue on Day-Long use of Quad CPU. It may impact Life of other parts of computer.

(Hey, Instead of ES, I am heavy with DD (Dow $25 Ticker). Like you said, NO Up-tick rule, great volume to support for Easy-In, Easy-Out. I am with Interactive Brokers.)

Is it me or has HP removed the TV Tuner option from the HDX 18 & 16 as of just a few minutes ago? I was configuring one of each when the option vanished. For those with the tuner what is your experience and opinion?

    Hated BSDO;

TV tuner for HDX18t seem to be a joke. It is only good for Airwave ATSC, it seems.

I have not ordered my HDX18t yet, but I will order it with USB-TV Tuner available from HP. I comes with Remote and allows you to tune both NTSC/ATSC with QAM, and I can use it for both Air and my Cable connection.

    elated,

    Thanks for your quick reply.

I'd still like to hear from those with the TV tuner installed.
I've thought about an USB one as posted by others as a future upgrade.

I'm wondering if these Altec speakers are just defective?

They are great sounding but there is crackling....even with the equalizer, I can't seem to find the right balance to make it not crackle and pop.....

Is everyone having issues with the speakers?

At least yours worked out of the box...unlike the dead on arrival speakers that came to my door...

I'm curious if anyone has found a simple sleeve to put this notebook in. I have selected a few bookbags that I think/know will fit this laptop but I would really like to have a sleeve for it too....anyone know where to start looking or even better a highly recommended product that they already know fits the 18t comfortably?

a sleeve would be nice. what i do is wrap my HDX in the nice microfiber sleeve that it came in. And what I actually do is I take one end of the foam pad that came with the HDX since it's molded to the shape and I put that on the bottom of my backpack, it fits perfectly down there.

Then I put the HDX in it so at least there's some kind of protection for the bottom of the HDX because I didn't want to put the backpack down on the floor and risk damaging the HDX.

overall with the speakers, I'm pretty happy with it, I was able to watch Wall-E and Hell Boy with no sound issues. But I do notice crackling and popping occasionally with some songs. I just don't know what it is...

considering I feel I got lucky with my unit I'm just not going to try to return it to fix the speakers since it's probably an issue with all speakers...

I'd like to know as well. I didn't get mine with one since I already have a USB TV tuner but it would be nice to know.

Also, anyone with the TV tuner, can you watch full 1080p resolution?

I am glad I did not buy at the first production model line of HDX18t. With my previous experience with ZD7000 Model, it took a while for them to iron out all of those defective or short comings, and made it to be a good production model line some months later.

Quad Core Issue, Graphics Chips Set, Speaker Issue, and now TV Tuner issue will all be inclusive of Next Production Line Model and a new Sonata Battery will also help the Model.

Ok, FINALLY received my HDX18 with the Quad.
HOWEVER, when I tried to install the 64bit of Vista Ultimate via the disc, the computer would not boot up from disc.
I saw in the bios it is listed.. but no go..

are there any tips or workarounds for this?
I thought i read in previous posts someone having a similar problem.

Well you assume there's going to be another model. They could very well come out with another 18.4" laptop that has nothing to do with the HDX and kill the HDX18 like they did with the 20.1" Dragon..

I don't expect them too, but you never know!!

We all know they do not manufacture this thing in USA. Fedex Shipping route will tell you, that this thing is being out sourced from Taiwan and China. I doubt if HP has any design team in USA. Likewise, any engineering scheme incorporated into this model, could very well be built with no HP spirit.

TV tuner will tell you this.

By now, HP is probably working hard and try to come up with an economic model that makes sense for them to re-design the mother board, which will reflect all those feed backs they have had from the first production model line. I just hope they have sold enough quantity to justify this.

Hello, I just joined. I apologize if this has come up before, I am only on page 27 or so in my reading of this long thread:

I want to order a protective anti-glare film for my soon to arrive HDX18 from photodon.com
but they need exact measurements. I'd like to have it on hand as soon as the laptop arrives so I can put the film on immediately while it is at its cleanest. I am, therefore, hoping someone who already has their machine will post their screen measurements for me to send on. I had provided measurements, slightly differing, from posted reviews, hoping to get the largest and trim if necessary.

The text of the message I got was:

    "Glad to hear from you!

To actually fill this order, we will need the definite measurements for this laptop.

With that being said, for the second set of sizes that you have provided, the cost for an anti-glare film will be about $24.44 plus the cost of shipping. Shipping will be around $6.75.

This is a custom cut so it will need to be called in to place the order.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me.

    Thank You &Take Care!

    Lisa Marie"

I have their film on my two other laptops and feel much safer with it protecting the screen. I don't even remember if glare was a problem on the cursed Toshiba or Compaq. I can highly recommend them, customer service has been very good whenever there was a problem.

If any of you decide to try it, please say A L Hinkle mentioned their product on this forum.

So far this laptop has met/exceeded my expectations. It runs much cooler than the DV9500 (AMD version) I have. My only gripe is that on boot up that dam GUI with the volume/bass/treble causes crackling until I kill it in task manager. That is the only issue I have with the sound. It sounds way better then the 9500. Yes the screen is not as bright but I think that it looks outstanding in normal lighting. The 5Ghz N mode is a plus since all my neighbors are running 2.4Ghz causing everyone to step on each others signal (this causes reduced throughput). I get a 4.8 on the windows experience for the graphics the lowest after that is 5.7 for my HDD.

    I have the P8400 and I installed 2x2Gig OCZ PC6400 and swapped the 250 drive for a WD 320gig 7200 RPM.

To who asked about swaping dual to quad on the motherboard... Yes it can be done. The motherboards are all the same. You would just need the different HSF combo that comes with the Quad.

What are both of your Vista Graphics scores (desktop and gaming?)

Also, what different HFS combo? How is the dual core HSF combo different from the Quad core HSF combo?

Its 4.8 top 1 and 5.7 bottom (sorry at work and don't remember the order) this is after a fresh Ultimate install and the latest laptopvideo2go drivers.

Someone mentioned earlier that the quad has 2 heat pipes. I am not sure if this is correct but he asked about the Dual core HSF which mine has 1 heat pipe as seen in the pic. I just bought a new digital camera so I will take another pic.

Sorry for my grossly remembered Windows scores I posted earlier from work. Anyway here are the correct ones.

    5.2 CPU
    5.9 Memory
    4.8 Graphics
    5.3 Gaming Graphics
    5.7 HDD

Here's a sleeve that will work with the HDX18:

Go to sfbags[dot]com (I can't post URLs yet...) Lookup the laptop finder and you'll see the HP bag and the items that will fit it - only the sleeve case 35-22 is big enough.

Get it with the flap (has velcro closure) and with the suspension shoulder strap (best shoulder strap I've ever seen on a bag - wife and I takes are off when we go do photgraphy and use them on our photo bags!).

Other than this - I have not found anything that is spec'd to hold this beast.

    Good luck!

    -Devin

    P. S. All products I have of SFBags.com are very high quality, well crafted gear.

Just got my new HP HDX 18t (2.5ghz, dual 500g hds, 2g Ram, tv tuner, wireless w/ bluetooth) yesterday.

I unpacked it and plugged it in - it stayed up for approx 5 minutes and then just shut off. System was plugged into a surge protector (and I switched to wall outlet as well), got a power indicator light, and the system still shuts down after 1-3 minutes. It doesn't matter if I'm in Windows, at a boot prompt (for Windows), or in the BIOS - system shuts off. I also let the battery charge fully and repeated the tests - system shuts off after the same approx amount of time and will boot immediately indicating that the battery is still supplying power and isn't dead. I also tried with the a/c adapter plugged in and the battery out - same results.

I contacted HP tech support and after 1 hour of chat support, the rep is sending me a new a/c adapter. Doesn't this sounds like a heat/hardware issue? I'm not pleased that they I won't get the new a/c adapter until next Monday and I'll have to go through all the troubleshooting again and most likely get the same results.

Is anyone else having these types of issues straight out of the box. I have reset BIOS settings to default and still the same issues.

Also - the build quality on my notebook seems a bit shoddy - the left side of notebook when opened - next to the speaker (perforated area) is raised compared to the rest of the notebook. When I push down on it so that it contours with the system it pops and then goes right back to sticking out.

I would really like to love this machine, but so far it and HP are batting 0...

Any help/advise would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

    -DC

As I had pointed out, based on feedback here, that speaker peferation part is poorly designed. It doesn't seem to fit. I've got the same problem with 2 of my laptops. In addition to a dead backlight on one unit, I now have a dead harddrive on another. I won't blame HP for that, I had a dead hard drive from a Gateway circca 2000.. gee that laptop cost me 3.5K back then with 0.45ghz processor LOL.

I don't know what levels the battery is charged up when shipped, but if you cannot boot from battery, then your system isn't looking too good.

I would suggest you take out both RAM modules, and see if it boots to BIOS. Then reinsert one, and boot up again etc.. I would also suggest when you call in to complain about that plastic part. When i mentioned it to someone higher up, I was told it wasn't a problem. It obviously is, but not to them, so speak up.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231156

my wife has the HDX16. Can I take out her 1GB and replace it with my stock 2GB from the HDX18? then she too will have 4GB? I am wondering if it is the same type..

Just want to make sure that's the right thing....

And it looks pretty nice actually. I think I'll definitely order one as soon as I know that my 18t is all set and functioning properly. I guess this is where you order the sleeve right?

    http://www.sfbags.com/products/sleevecases/sleevecases.htm

And then just make sure that I put the right size in the appropriate box?

    Thanks for your help.

Yep - that the sleeve for the HP HDX18 and that is the order page. Again - I highly recommend the flap closure and the suspension shoulder strap - well worth the money. As far as the piggyback goes - we have one and use it rarely, but if you are going to be carrying the AC adapter around with it, then it might be a good idea.

Their other bags are wonderful, but they don't make a bag big enough for this notebook.

    Enjoy!

Wow that is horrible!! Sorry to hear that....

At this point, I think the number of negative experiences versus positive is 2:1 ratio!!

If you charged your battery fully and it still shuts down within 5 minutes, it's got to be something else. Please let us know on Monday when you get your a/c adapter and see if there's any difference...

I think most of us here believe that it isn't the A/C adapter...

I am sorry to hear you have these problems.Have you tried to load a program that measures CPU,Video and HDD temperature?
Just to be sure it is not a high temp problem.

I remind you that all CPU's have been programmed to shut down the whole PC when temperatures go too high.

As far the build quality problem, I can assure you that you are not alone!I have exactly the same problem in the same position but to be honest it is not very bad.It is barely visible on my PC.

No, sorry. This was the Black Friday 40% deal that MS Live Cashback sponsored and it doesn't appear that MS will repeat it for those who weren't able to get through during those hectic 12 hours of internet frustration. I didn't even think I was going to get it because I had not heard a thing from MS for 9 days after I placed the order with HP.

Well, welcome me to the lounge!

Got my beauty yesterday when I decided to splurge with the 40% Live cashback. What a nice upgrade from my dv8000t which served me quite well. Its amazing what mere two years do to computers.

Oh well, time to play some video games and maybe buy a blu ray movie, really see what it looks like.

    Couple questions that I have:

I ordered one hard drive option. In my DV8000, there was at least a connector so that one can hook up the second hard drive by themselves. I opened it up once I got it - looks like there is no port for the second hard drive if you don't order one. Is that true???

Second question is regarding the TV tuner that was available with the purchase, but I did not pull the trigger. Is the TV tuner with this machine integrated, or is it the same old expresscard tuner?

    Thanks guys!

Congrats! Hope you have a POSITIVE experience with yours!

The TV Tuner is integrated, there's a hole that's not drilled next to the power plug...

So far if you did not get it with a second HDD, you are out of luck. No one has been able to find anything, caddies/cables kits to do aftermarket add ons...

As an alternative, you can add on a hard drive in place of your optical drive.

Interesting...and the blu-ray drive is SATA so you don't lose performance.

The only thing is it won't match the exterior of the HDX18t (although they say it's a chrome finish).

You might try to remove your factory face plate and replace that to the 3rd party device. All optical drives are standard with only the face plate and rear interface changed/adapted.

My HDX is supposed to arrive on the 16th but Ryan said he upgraded it to 2 Day shipping so I have no idea when it's going to arrive. This is what FedEx has so far.

Thanks for reply! Well, I guess if I want an integrated tv tuner, I'm out of luck on that one as well, huh?

Also, its a shame about the second HDD, I really used the two HDDs in my dv8000t, especially when it came to copying large files, since it would make stuff much faster.

Question: What does eSATA do? Is it like USB? If so, how is it different and what can I hook up to it?
