the cache is split up equally for each core, single threaded apps = 1/4 of your total cache, dual threaded apps = 1/2 etc.

unless you fully intend to frequently utilize apps that are able to address multiple cores i wouldn't bother spending that much extra $$ on the quad.
Thank you for the answer Valen. I have decided to purchase the Q9100 processor. I am looking to hold this notebook for a couple years and the main software I use is Adobe Master Collection and with my knowledge that software will use all 4 cores. So overall when I am working in Photoshop, Illustrator, Premier, etc I should benefit much more with the Q9100 than a T9600. I really would have preferred the QX9300 but $700 upgrade from Q9100 to QX9300 is outrageous.. I get a $2000 budget for a notebook upgrade every 3 years with my company to keep my equipment up to date. With the coupon I was right under it.. So the Quad just made more sense to go for that period of time.

At least I hope my assumption is correct in regards to Adobe CS4 with the Quads! :) Thoughts? :D

Does anybody have some help or tutorial links on how to setup Multi-Boot on the HDX or in general? I am not sure what I want to setup, I was thinking Windows 7 and Vista or even maybe Linux.

I guess I am just looking for things to read and understand/learn more. I am going to checkout Google, but it can't hurt to ask here also.

Thanks!

EDIT: Prime example of why you search before you post.
http://www.tweaktown.com/guides/1713/1/windows_7_and_vista_and_xp_simple_multi_boot_guide/index.html

Anyways I am still interested in any links others may have found that have done it successfully.

Since the DV7t can now be configed with an ATI 4650, what are the chances the HDX18 will soon be next?

The HDX18t HDMI port is an output only port. So you cannot plug your PS3 into it, as it would only work if the port accepted inputs.

Also read someone asking about Linux earlier...

I'm running Ubuntu 8.10 x64 on my HDX. runs like a phreakin' dream!
my only issue with it was running Compiz. as it's constantly utilizing your GPU, powermizer makes it quite painful with how it keep downclocking the GPU after your animations stop playing for a few secs.. makes it quite jerky.

Have a look at ubuntuforums.org and search for "powermizer disable" you'll find a gold little script to turn the annoying thing off so your compiz animations are smooth.

I've also got ultimate ubuntu running inside a VM in my vista host and it runs perfectly!
THANK YOU!! What are your SPECS????

Wouldn't be surprised ;) ...I remember when I bought my Gen1 17" XPS half a century ago using a 40% coupon, Dell was simply clearing out the remaining stock.

A month later, the 1710 replaced the original XPS with newer hardware.

I didn't buy my HDX (in prod right now) for gaming at all so I'm not worried about future releases. I've been eyeing the HDX18 for a while and always used to miss out on the coupons but got thru this time ($1298 shipped with T9400).

I'm planning to keep this for a while. This is going to be my official 'kitchen nook/living room' laptop

One thing about a Quad Core machine that really attracts me: there is always something going on on my laptop that is beyond my control. I have auto-update set up for both antivirus and Windows, and when those updates kick off my laptop slows waaaay down. With a Quad Code machine, the updates run on their own CPU. Same thing with Flash-oriented websites. The downside of a Quad Core machine is heat, so I am still debating about this.

I wasn't sure if the Quad was smart enough on Vista to use a separate available core. I'm hoping windows is smart enough to do that, but I have some doubts. Though, windows 7 is supposed to be designed around stuff like that, so I will be an early adopter when its released

Hi everyone! I've been lurking about for a couple weeks, and decided to become one of you all and purchased my HDX18 ! It will be delivered to me on Monday! I am so excited! This is my very first laptop! But now I do need some help. I will use my new HDX for the Internet, and playing SIMS2 and soon SIMS3. I think because of the graphics I will need a laptop cooler. I also have read that they can extend the lifetime of the laptop by keeping it cooler. I am not sure which to purchase. I think I've narrowed it down between Zalman 2000, ANTEC 200, and the CoolerMaster W2 (with 3 fans). Which do you all think is best? Or is there one I am missing? Also, because of the size of the HDX18, will it fit on these? I would appreciate any help or suggestions. Thank you all in advance! :notworthy:

Best thing to do is go build your computer and try it - you dont have to actually buy it, just get part of the way through the process. They are not usually good long, so you better do it soon if it still works.

I have heard great things about the Zalman 2000, but have not tried it myself. For playing SIM3 I doubt you will have to have a cooler though. It doesnt run that hot.

J&R has them for $20. J&R 20buck AC/DC 120W adapter

You need a N30 tip, which may or may not come with the product. It does say it comes with tips for HP, so it might. I ordered a few more
for my stock, but until I get them, I cannot verify which tips it comes with.

Highly recommended unit. There is also an even smaller 120W kensington that is DC only. About the size of a pack of HubbaBubba bubble gum.
I don't recall the part number right now, but if you are interested in the DC only one, let me know and I'll research.

Nice one! i'm sure you'll be quite happy with your new quad then :)
Adobe should utilize the 4 cores pretty happily but certainly not as well as windows 7 will... make sure you upgrade when it hits :)

or even try dual booting with the beta/RC for now and see if the difference in performance warrants you being an early adopter of win7

Glad i could help you out mate!

Just got my new HDX18!

Yeah, my keyboard looks warped a bit, and the touchpad doesn't line up with the graphics, but I don't care... it's cosmetic stuff and it doesn't change the fact that this thing rocks my socks!

Still, after reading this thread and trying to search through all 443 pages, I still haven't found the best bag/sleeve for this laptop. Does anyone have a recommendation or a link or a page number with what they are using?

Thanks for the headup on the Kensington Universal 12v power solution, that'll be going onto my list.

Haven't really been able to get a decent answer from HP about it yet.
Have called them up a couple of times and keep getting retards that don't know the difference between x86 & x64.. let alone knowing their own procedures or such things.

HP in Australia suck big time!

I'll probably just end up using one of my company's technet licenses and just build it from scratch. only problem with that is...well....can't really be bothered lol

Just download a copy of Vista SP1 x64 off of the torrents. Burn the iso to a disc. Don't download a cracked copy! Before installing x64 over your x86, you should backup C:\swsetup. This is all the drivers and software that ships with your laptop. Install a clean copy of Vista x64 from the disc you burned. Enter the Windows License Code from the sticker on the bottom of the laptop when it asks for it. When it has installed run all the setup.exe files from the swsetup folder you backed up to reinstall drivers/software. Now your good to go!

HELP! Sorry to shout, but I am so frustrated!

I hooked my laptop to a new Acer 23" external display. I can get it to have my laptop display show on the monitor if I say clone. I'd like the Acer to be the sole and primary, but whenever I set it to that in the Nvidia utility and then click ok to accept the change, it reverts back to laptop only and the laptop is set at 800x600.

Also, has anyone used a wireless keyboard with special keys and if so, did it play well with QuickLaunch? Mine didn't, I had to uninstall the program. The keyboard still works.
If I try Fn+F4 it flickers and then the laptop is set to 800x600 also. Then I set it back to clone and all is well.

Also, does anyone have the QuickLaunch Control Panel that is discussed here?

Something that fits under an airline seat, protects the laptop, carries the cords, mice, cables, etc., and... actually fits this machine. I'm headed over to Tob Bihn's showroom tomorrow, just to see if they have anything on the boards that might work. Tumi has it listed in a drop down, but no bags yet. I'm also heading by BestBuy to check out the Targus 17"-compatible bags.

I was just hoping someone had found a place that was already making them for large "16x9" laptops.

I think there needs to be a separate "sticky" thread on bags, as everyone seems to ask, over and over, the same questions, which have already been covered here ad-nauseum.

There are plenty of choices of bags for the HDX18t, from Mobile Edge and Belkin (two that I own), and Targus and others that have been mentioned already in this post.

Do some searches in this thread, or there is even a current thread about bags where it is discussed which ones fit nicely.

I checked them out and I wasn't thrilled with the level of protection I was going to get from the Targus bag @ my local Best Buy.

I headed down to Tom Bihn Bags in Seattle and I was pleased to find the man himself behind the counter. While he waited on another customer, I perused all the options hanging on the wall. When he was done I pulled out my HDX18 and informed him that no one was designing a bag to meet these specs and that, for the money I spent, I wasn't leaving it in the sock that HP provided.

He had two options, the first being a 2XL Soft Sleeve that fit the outside dimensions easily, but was a bit loose width wise. I could have added a couple of magazines to the soft sleeve and still had a bit of room.

The second option is the one I chose, the 2XL Horizontal Brain Cell. I was pleasantly surprised by the snug fit and hard sides protecting my laptop. Finally, something that fits like a glove rather than just a make do solution! Here are some pics:

It wasn't designed "specifically" for the HDX18, but it's by far the best I have seen either online or in a store. In speaking with Tom, he mentioned that he got six emails asking about a bag for the HDX18 this weekend alone, so hopefully he (and other companies) will start considering our size laptops when making new products.

Here is the link for the Horizontal Brain Cell. The size choice for the HDX18 is 2XL.

Thanks to everyone who replied, and hopefully we'll get a sticky "bag thread" soon!

Great post SeattleMike. Looks like a great fit.

Somebody should design a kick bag for the HDX18. It'd be a bit of a seller I am sure.

Still can't beat my semi-loaded HDX18 for $1298 shipped :D :D...Also at that price range, I'll take a Sager over a Asus anyday.

I hear that!!

I am looking at this for about $1,360 w/ a free printer once a new 30% coupon comes out. It'll be nice to have a HDTV Tuner for once.

Although, I did have a couple of questions.

Does the laptop come with a Sleeve? I have a nice roller backpack that I bought for school that will hold the HDX, but I'll need a sleeve to protect the surface of the laptop.

Also, I was reading on the new DP DV7-1270 and some people said the subwoofer was a joke. Nothing but a "cute little dust collector".

How is the sub in the HDX18? Can you actually hear or even feel it?

Thanks guys!
