Well the jury is in...I spent some time over the last week to flip flop hard drives. My problem was that my primary driver in Bay 1 was running really HOT. It had topped out at 58 degrees one day. Obviously this isn't good and causes the FAN to run oftem. It has forced me to run a Cooler. It works great but doesn't help when running on batteries. Anyway to prove a point to myself that it wasn't a Bay issue, I moved drive 1 to the drive 2 bay and vice versa.

I had made Image files of each drive prior to moving as I know I would have boot issues otherwise. After switching the drives and the restore images, I am back up.

I no longer run a cooler and here is why. HD0 in Bay 1 runs around 40 degrees. It is at 38 now running normally. HD1 in Bay 2 runs around 47-49 degrees. Still hot but since this isn't the primary activity drive, it runs cooler. Life is better.

But here is my question. How do I approach HP to replace this drive? I know that high heat is going to ultimately reduce the life of this drive and ultimately fail...about 30 seconds after the warrenty expires.

Any thoughts or ideas? Has anyone gotten HP to replace theirs under similiar circumstances?

    Please share.

Are they different speeds? Different speed hard drives can produce different amounts of heat, however exceptions do apply.

If they are the same speeds and even HDs, I would just contact support and let them know and see what they will do.

it doesn't matter if u replace it. it will still get hot. i know how to fix that probelm. use diskeeper to defrag that drive and leave automatic defrag on. my hard drive used to be really hot but after installing diskeeper and used it to defrag, my hardrive is always cool now ;) 40-45c max
