While Dell is offering 30 % discount on its laptops, HP is offering $30 OFF on its laptops.
What a joke!

Agreed. If it wasn't for the 40% cashback offered at HP on Black Friday (and fought for the next week), I would have a new Dell laptop, rather than an HDX 16t.
-
That is totally rediculous. :confused2:

Are DELL'S pretty reliable compared to other notebooks? I am in the market to buy one. Thanks
-
Wow, this is ridiculous, Dell give great rebates to their customers
-
It's quite simple guys, Dell is sucking right now and can't sell their notebooks so they *have* to offer discounts. Check it out, HP outsold Dell 5 to 1 on Black Friday:
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=avozVbelfkrk&refer=home
They sold all the laptops they can make for the next month in the space of a week, they're actually purposely keeping prices high so that demand does not outstrip their supplies. Don't expect any good HP coupons until the new year.
-
I wonder what the real sales figures were between the two for the whole weekend including web sales and retail channel?
I don't see that Dell is "sucking right now". Better discounts, bad economy, what are people going to buy who need a notebook? -
Dell has customer service in India. I had a hard time talking with them over an issue when I was trying to purchase a laptop. It took me hours to get through, how lousy is that. I told myself I would never bother with them again.
Do you know if their customer service is any better now?

For Dell, use Dell chat. Chat has no accent. -
HP's, especially the Dv5t, and for those who are willing to trade luggability for some bigger screen real estate, the HDX series, offer much better value then the Dell's right now in terms of laptop config and performance. Dell has not updated the GPU for it's m1530 in a very long time. So, in my view, Dell should be discounting, even more, especially if they want to clean out a large supply of these machines before updating the line, which I think they will do early next year. This entire thing is supply and demand. No big discounts from HP now because they can sell them like hotcakes, so why discount them much? However, after Christmas, orders are going to drop for everything and HP will be discounting then. You just need to wait a little bit and I think you will save a couple hundred bucks easy on a nicely configed. HP or you can see if Dell updates it's line. Then you will also see that HP can really be a better deal then Dell as Dell will jack up its prices as soon as it updates things.

Since Dell doesn't have anything that competes with the bigger screen (18.4 and 20.1") HDX's, that's not a fair statement. Regarding the dv5t unit, although it looks like an OK PC (except that Bronze color...yuk!), I wouldn't say it is a better value than, say, the Dell Studio 15, which is available in over 100+ lid designs (some are very cool looking, too). Just looking at specs and pricing, it seems the Dell Studio 15 gives you more bang for the buck than the dv5t (more RAM, bigger hard drive and better CPU). But, "value" is in the eye of the consumer.
I'm sure both are good units, and with the economy, I'm sure neither are "selling like hotcakes", and both manufacturers could do better by offering better discounts now. -

If I had to bet on which company will be around and thriving in 5 years, I'd go with HP. They have many more revenue streams than Dell.

I just don't know why Dell has not updated the m1530, a very, very, sharp looking laptop by the way. I mean, 256mb NVIDIA 8600M GT versus the HP dv5t or HDX line that give you the NVIDIA 9600M GT with 512mb. Now, I am not a big gamer, but I want to be able to game a little bit, now and then, and not do so with "yesterday's technology." So what, by the way, if you can overclock it till the GPU and your laptop melts away? Give me a break. Plus, Dell does not want to drop it's prices anywhere near like they should to unload those XPS'es. As for Dell's other lines, that's fine and good, go for that. But, those are for Powerpoint or a DVD or two. As for Dell's gamers, Alienware, price for performance, Asus has them beaten by light years. But, for some medium level gaming, along with still having a great screen and the mutlifunctionality of the Office Suites, I think HP is certainly very hard to beat right now. Dell is sitting on their laurels.

BUT...
When I looked at Dell's site, the XPS was little changed from 12 months ago. The deals were pretty good, but there were just some deal killers (no larger screen than 1440x900, no 64 bit except for Vista home--I need business/ultimate). On the other hand, I really liked that the XPS m1530 is now offered with a BD burnable.
I just bought my first HP computer in about 10 years. Some things I like better than the 1530, some things I do not.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
For non-gamer, I'll take 30% off over $30 off any day, especially in current economic climate.

BD burnable drives are still in very short supply on laptops. From what I know, just Dell XPS and Sony FW lines are in the mainstream with them. Lenovo might also have some, I am not sure. Anyway, I believe HP is going to release a BD burner later this month for laptops. BD is still a very much a future oriented technology and we will see a lot of development with it in upcoming laptops. Supposedly, a Blu-Ray disk using interlacing technology will give us 100gb plus disks down the road, but that's 5 years off, all very cool though. But, my complaint remains. So, Dell takes advanced technology like a BD burner and puts it in a lappie with an older GPU. Then, they also want to charge you extra for your own "personal support team" for tech. support. That 30% off, by the way, is also a bit of trickery because it's off a way jacked up price. HP just impresses me as it was junk 3-5 years ago and now it's becoming good stuff, but Dell, they seem to be going more in the opposite direction. Anyway, it's good to have choices, and the XPS is still a very cool looking lappie. It's just that when I see gamers overclocking that GPU till it's 150 degrees or something so they can play Crysis and Warhead or something else on it, I have to chuckle. I want what works best, but, I am not going to be a fanboy.

I tried to purchase an HP laptop during the Black Friday sale but was frustrated when I couldn't get through with the 40% CB after trying for hours. I vowed not to purchase an HP laptop knowing full well the price I could have gotten that day. Dell comes around with their "12 days of deals" and I thought their M1350 was an amazing deal considering the discounts they were giving. I came back to notebookreview and after reading reviews of the dv5t, I gave it a second look. Sure enough it was still much, much cheaper w/o any super discounts and it came with better (and more updated) specs than the M1530, so I came crawling back to HP. Dell, not about to let go of their failed sale, is now giving me hell for canceling and will probably come out with a 15% restocking fee to show for it.
Edit: Also, HP is offering instant rebates for their laptops. The dv5t for example has $150 in instant rebate so if you factor that in, its about a 20% instant discount. (FWIW, I couldn't claim that $30 off coupon- maybe because I purchased through their APP)
