    Hi there people!

I have a NX8220 for almost a year now, and have had some pbs with it since then... The first problem was in around december/january 2005/06 when the left screen side got dark and had to be replaced. I send it to repair... It worked fine for 2 to 3 months, and then suddenly started to crash on boot almost 10-15 times before it stopped responding at all... Last week it went back for repairs... Oh yes, and a dark spot about 8 pixels wide appeared on the right side of the tft last month, so that as well is to be repaired... I am on the other hand very pleased with HP support as they have always been very pleasant, professional and quick responding my queries and repairing my unit so I would like to continue with HP.

Anyway, I have had 3 major pbs with my laptop within less than a year... how "well" will it behave one year from now when the warranty will be over? I have bought the nx8220 because it is a good laptop, goods specs for the money but also because it is an enterprise laptop.. that means it is mostly aimed at people that use it to work, not to play, people that need to rely on products they have and cannot expect them to go away every 3 months for repairs (and worse, pay for them once warranty is over..)
I am somewhat concerned with this question so I am asking you guys 2 things:

1-how many of you have never had to put your laptop to repairs? Am I being a sissy with all of this? Is it normal for a laptop to be so faulty? (If it is, I am running straight back to my desktop again…:S) My opinion is that a product should work well at least the time the warranty is available… That is what the warranty means I think, not free maintenance for 2 years..

2- I am going to write to HP to ask them if they can change my laptop for another one, or even better, for some other model which I would be glad to pay for the difference from the original price of my laptop to the new one… has somebody ever tried this or something similar?

Well that is all for now. Cheers!

I got my dv4000 almost 6 months ago and haven't had any major problems with it. Only the DVD drive acts up every now and then, and then fixes it's self later. I haven't ever had to take it in to get worked on. I think yours just might be one of those 1/100 laptops that are faulty. I doubt you'd be able to return it after a year, but then I've never tried.

All I can say is that my Compaq R4000 is working just like it did when I bought a year ago. I haven't had even the slightest issue.

    That's my expereince.

    Hi again.
Well, you maybe can not love HP for its product reliability, but their costumer service rocks.. They're gonna refund my laptop for the same price when I bought it.

I'm facing a difficult decision now.. wich one to buy?? I had made a pretty good deal with my nx8220 since buying it in UK instead of Portugal made me save about $500-$600. the money they will refund me will be only enough to buy a laptop just a little better than the one I have lol... I get one extra year warranty though..

    cheers!

man i have to tell you something before you start dreaming .

Hp is one of the worst company that I've ever seen in my whole life coz I've got little bit experience with this company .
I'll give you some of this.
10 Monts ago i bought my first laptop ( HP Pavilion DV2000EA) it had got many issues ,they had been trying to repair it for such along time but unfortunately without succeed .
so after 8 repairs they had decided to replace the unit to HP Pavilion DV2530EA and after 2 monts it's got again some issues so believe me I've been learning about this company for long time and the last then that i want to wish you is good luck coz if you open your eyes and surfing in the Internet some forms and you'll see what is hp like , i wish i would have a chance to do something against this company.
so man good luck with your dream man

Please read my lemon thread. It has some good info about a replacement process. In short...

Need 4 major repairs before they'll consider it.
Options include a new laptop or full refund.
New laptops can only cost so much, usually your original price + $100, and you cannot pay the difference to get something better.

Sure you can. Take the full refund, add as much difference you want and order a laptop :)

I've had a ZT1000 since 2002 and other than the well known DC port issues (I have fixed this 3 times with my trusty soldering iron..grrr) and 1 dead PCB inverter board ($10-$20) replacement part I have been happy with my HP notebook.

You should expect your notebook to work for at least 3 years (in my opinion). If you travel a lot and have a consumer grade notebook, this time will go down significantly (too lazy to see what you have :) )

I've had my nw8440 for a year now, and other than having to have the power adapter repaired/replaced 3 times and the point stick cap 3 times, I haven't had a problem with mine.
Except for several dark dirt spots in the display; and they don't bother me much anymore; I didn't think they were worth going through the trouble to fix.
    But overall, it's been great!

As far as reliability, aside from lemons and a few bad apple case managers, I think you should only expect very few problems with just about any laptop manufacturer.

My V2000Z is about 13 months old. It's used daily and had only one problem just recently, a dead AC adapter. I went on live chat and about 15 minutes later they issued a CSO and they next-day shipped me a brand new adapter. Laptop works great now.

On my DV6305US, I had a mix of problems: Resonance and video problems (at the time, I didn't know it was caused by a simple ground loop). I sent it in for repairs twice, and then got a replacement (this happened over weeks of dealing with HP). I requested a TX1000Z since DV6000's are notorious for being extra susceptible to these video problems, but they shipped me a DV6000Z instead. It didn't fix the video problem, but I found a workaround for the ground loop issue, and the resonance was much quieter. So I haven't had a single problem with my replacement yet.

In my case, it was two CSO's and a complete lack of professionalism by my case manager. One CSO was completed with a motherboard replacement and the second was... nothing... (no repairs were done, they just shipped it back with an extra stick of RAM installed). After that, they finally agreed to a replacement.

after 9 months, my dv 1000's system had to be replaced (under warranty) because it will not power up. and after 9 or so months after the replacement, the laptop won't power up again. since its not under warranty anymore, i had it checked by independent repair shops, and they all said the system board had to be replaced, again!! (*&*%&@(^#!!!!

the next laptop i buy will mostly like NOT be an hp.

Like most electronic purchases it's probably best to wait and buy an update of a model rather than a new release. That said, my 2 1/2 year old zv6000 (update of identical zv5000) is dubbed "the tank" cuz it refuses to give up the ghost and takes my harsh treatment giving me zero problems.

I bought a dv2310 us about 8 months ago. This is the second time I am having major motherboard issues. The first time it took 2 weeks for them to repair it (they had delays). This time I placed the service order on the 26th and they made a mistake and never even sent me the box to send it back. Finally I called, and after much harrassment (they insisted they sent it) they called fedex who informed them they never received a box. I was pretty ticked off - having a subpar machine is one thing, but when the return process is faulty is well that really is an issue. So I asked to speak to a case manager to voice a complaint. They then informed me that you have to have sent the computer in 3 times to be allowed to speak to someone higher up! I guess its not considered out of norm to only send it in twice.
    In my impression:
    A) Their machines are not reliable
    B) Their return process is faulty
    C) Their compaint / service recovery / customer service process is beyond belief.

I bought the machine with the thought that at least while its under warranty I should be able to handle it, as it was a little cheaper than a comparable dell. Had I known about their defective return process and customer service I would have bought something else.
