    Hello all,

I was just wondering if anyone had some inside info on the upcoming updates to HP's notebook line upon the Santa Rosa release. Specifically I was wondering if the update to the dv6000t will stick with the nVidia line and go with the new 8 series or if a different brand of GPU will be used.

Logically they would keep the nVidia but I was just wondering if anyone knew for sure or had any idea.

I'm asking since I may want to run Linux on the machine and nVidia has a good reputation for timely providing Linux drivers along with Windows versions. Thanks for any info.

obviously, nobody has any real inside info on the next line up for the HP dv6000 series.
Yes, I think it's very likely that HP will adopt the new Santa Rosa after its release, maybe in May, June or later, but who knows. Anyway, as far as graphic card goes, I highly doubt that HP will use the new 8800 card from nVidia. Simply because HP is mainstream computer manufacturer that doesn't focus on High End gaming and graphic machines. So it's really unlikely for HP to use the new 8800 card for its laptop series or even for desktop series anytime soon. It's just the demand for DX10 is really not that high for the general public right now. However only time will tell and eventually one year or two years from now on, things will change.

sidenote, consider the size of the new 8800 card for desktop, it's freakn' huge! A laptop Go version of the 8800 card will still be too big to fit into the dv6000. Probably the dv9000 has enough space to fit that monster.

I doubt HP will ever use the 8800 for their laptops. Most likely they will wait for Nvidia to produce something much smaller that puts out a lot less heat and is dx10 compatible.

If HP offers the 8800 card it'll be through their subsidiary Voodoo.

Thanks for the help. So general consensus is they will keep the nVidia 7 series in the laptop updates?

I spoke to an HP rep at Best Buy up here in Canada last month. He said the next series of laptops, in April or May, will still likely feature the Nvidia GeForce Go 6 series as the standard mainstream, with the GeForce Go 7 remaining the more expensive option...

To Speed, I suggest you have a read here:

Unless HP's Global Gaming Unit begins releasing things sometime this year.

Then we could very well see HP notebooks with Go 8800s.

The GeForce 7 cards are already the 'standard mainstream' for HP notebooks, and not 'expensive' at all.

And it would make no sense for HP to release entirely new notebook designs, and leave out cards for DX10 gaming and other applications.

Given that none of HP's notebooks currently offer any high end GPUs, I doubt they are going to suddenly unveil one with the 8800. It's likely that they will still use the Go 7 series until nVidia puts out more low-end Go 8 series GPUs. The only other thing that I can think of is that HP might bump up the processor offering within the 7 series (ie. dv9000 might have a Go 7800/7900 GPU, dv6000 a Go 7600, and the dv2000 a Go 7400).

All I know is I want them to offer the AMD chipset/ATI Graphics combos they have in the business machines into the consumer line. The 2000 and 6000z Hell, and t series, are just too damn old to buy.

I agree - when HP refreshes their line up, I believe their higher-end GPU would include an 8xxx Nvidia or an ATI but unlikely to include the 8800 specifically
