I'm disappointed to hear about the (probable) switch to plastic. I really liked the build quality of my H-P 2133 - it just ran Vista Home Basic too slowly - and the battery life sucked. I sold it in hopes of getting a 10-incher with the same great metal build :(

Hey, Jason, I meant like the quote box thing. Like this:

But regular quotation marks are fine.

So what do people think of the general concept of a cheapened out HP Mini?

although it would be nice to have a higher res display and wireless n, everything else on this is what i expected and wanted.

love the fit and finish of it. but most importantly i'm really interested in this Linux MIE. i wonder how it will work and what programs i'll be able to use, but i never used linux before so this is all new to me. since i use a NAS for my media storage i wonder if i'll be able to use it.

check out engadget for more pictures. i'm torn between the want to by it now or later.

strange how they offering a 8.9" also.. as a 10.2" as an upgrade.. but the casing is the same.. i guess the edges on the 8.9" will be bigger.. as you can see HERE

XP hasn't done this, Microsoft has placed this limit recently. They've placed a limit that manufacturers now can only see netbooks with XP with 1gb of ram maximum. Though after you buy it, you can still upgrade it to 2gb of ram. Its just HP is not allowed to sell it with over 1gb of ram.

You must install the standard XP build to be able to do this because the XP-lite preloaded in netbooks has a 1GB cap.

    Hi Guys,

Big fan of this forum, this is my first post. I am interested in buying the HP Mini 1000, love the looks, the keyboard seems decent + they promissed us a 6cell battery. I couldn't ask for more :p

Does anyone know what brand the 16 GB SSD drive is? Think it's fast enough to worth considering? The storage space is not an issue, 16 GB are more than enough for me, just hoping the 16GB SSD will top the 60 GB 4200 RPM magnetical drive. Any thoughts?

That is incorrect. XP does recognize 2 GB w/o having to re-install XP "standard build".

This is true for non-HP netbooks.

**** HP reps giving wrong info. In this case, I believe it will recognise 2GB, it's just the licensing restriction that Microsoft places on OEMs.

I asked myself the same Q and decided it wasn't worth it. by the time you add the larger screen and more ram, you're nearly at $500. for $49 more, you can get a 'full' hp/cpq notebook with dvd drive, larger screen, far more capabilities for just a little more cash...

so im passing on this one. it looks stunning though which is why i wanted it so nm....

aside - i have two ibm notebooks - an x41 and an x41 tablet. the x41 is about 3 pounds with the 'smaller' battery and it performs so well. brand new, this machine was about $1800 but i see them now for about $400 or so on craigslist. for $400, i feel that this is a far better option than this netbook book.

the x41 is, seriously, the size of one of my school notebooks. it's tiny and durable. they have newer models (x60, x61, etc) but if you only have $400 or so to spend, i would certainly consider a used x41 from craigslist or ebay.

    fwiw.

the one thing i find particularly stunning is the form factor on these machines. i still feel interested in buying one but i already have so many notebooks (approx 7) and i only use 3 of them for the most part. LOL

Several reviews have already been posted by a few computer publications and it looks like HP has a HIT! The keyboard and solid construction have been given unanimous praise. But...

Am I the only one who would like to see more design elements and features from the HP Mini-Note 2133? The 2133 looks better than any netbook to date. It's fatal flaw is the use of underpowered VIA processors. The Intel Atom would certainly remedy that shortcoming!

I'm sure the aluminum exterior is substantially more expensive to produce than the hard plastic casing of the HP Mini 1000. But it certainly would differentiate the Mini 1000 from the plethora of other netbooks (with the same 1.6GHz Atom processor, Intel 950 chipset and graphics and 1024x600 resolution display).

The 2133 is also unique because it has a much higher resolution 8.9" display at 1280x768 (vs. 1024x600). Personally, I'd be willing to pay an extra $75 or $100 for this high resolution display (rather than $50 for the Infinity display). Perhaps HP will add this option to the list soon! :D

Despite its good looks and fantastic high-res display, I still don't see the point of HP continuing to offer the 2133? Who would pay $729 (the least expensive model with XP) for the 2133 when $399 buys a Mini 1000 with XP??? Having used a 2133 for a while, it's an impressive machine in a lot of ways....until you try to multi-task and the VIA processor chokes....what were they thinking with VIA???

I believe the sucky 1024x600 is a restriction that Intel puts on all netbook manufacturers, just like Microsoft puts limitations on the OS. Don't pay attention to list price, you can get the 2133 significantly cheaper but with Vista Home. HP bit on Vista but should dump that for XP (or do it yourself) on the 2133. The 1.2 GHz does fine with XP(from you) at around $400 (deals come and go, now $508 on amazon).

The 1000 is just a me-too with strange mouse buttons.

True, with the most recent coupons from HP, $799 buys a tx2500z with 2.0GHz AMD RM-70, 3GB RAM, 250GB Hard Drive and all the other basic specs. And it will probably be useful in two years, unlike netbooks.

In 10 years or so, netbooks will be tucked away in corners of basements...much like my old Commodore 64 and Atari 2600.

Probably but it would run so horrendously slow that it would not be worth it. this is the reason why they are coupling most netbook with either xp or some form of linux - both with far less overhead than vista.

with a 1.6ghz proc and 512mb ram, booting to a vista desktop on a netbook would be an accomplishment!

i know people that have gotten vista on other netbooks but, again, the user experience leaves much to be desired.

I think that we may be jumping the gun a bit on the Vista question. Take a look at the user reviews about Vista on the Wind here and here. Honestly, I think that the bottleneck in performance will be the 4200 1.8" PATA drive; if not for that, Vista will probably perform just as well.

The HP Mini-Note 2133 (with the aforementioned hideous 1.2GHz VIA C7 processor) is sold with Vista Business (which isn't as resource-intensive as Vista Home Premium). But I'm still amazed it can handle it....I'd think DOS would be more in line with the performance of the VIA C7! :p

Not that bad at all. I'm still using my 10 year old 0.3 webcam these days and it works just fine for a (non-fullscreen) video chat. The difference between 640x480 and 1280x1024 is only a factor 2, but the way we denote MPs just makes it seem worse.

I wouldn't focus too much on the webcam resolution to be honest. :)

It's identical to every other netbook- the MSI Wind, Lenovo S10, Dell Mini 9, et al.

It's HP's fault for making making the HP mini-note 2133 so **** good and giving it a much higher-resolution display.

The Mini 1000 is easily the top of the netbook heap, the keyboard alone helps put it on top.

Someone more technically-inclined than me needs to find a way to pop open the 2133 and slide the chipset/processor/graphics form the Mini 1000 inside. I've seen a 2133 sitting beside a dv5t. The 2133 manages to look even better than the dv5t and feels anvil-solid! The build quality is at least as good as the dv5t but feels even more solid being made of aluminum!

If nothing else, I'd love to see HP toss the VIA processor and replace it with an Intel chipset/graphics and one of the Ultra Low Voltage processors (like the ones found in the Toshiba Portege). Up the price a few hundred bucks and it's a strong-performng ultra-mobilie with an aluminum exterior.

As it stands, the 2133 is wasted potential!

not if you want something you can throw in a messenger bag, i know two people with the 2500, and its a great machine, but it needs a sturdy hard-case which makes it very unportable from my perspective.

I actually switched from the Dell Mini 9 to the HP Mini 1000. I did have to sacrifice the 1.3 mp webcam, but honestly, i wasn't quite using it much. The keyboard is manna from heaven. The dell was just way too tiny. The trackpad does get some getting used to...

Overall, the netbook is very nice.

Totally, or post them here. I'm considering writing a review.. I'll do some streaming later tonight. I just got it this morning before work, so I'll post my findings as I dig deeper.

There is vga output, but only with a special dongle. Lame i know. I have the 8gb ssd, which i'll upgrade later. The resolution looks fine to me and for what i do. The keyboard is absolutely amazing. I've had my fair share of small keyboards (sony t150 and dell mini 9), and this keyboard is great. You really want to have a great keyboard, or else the netbook becomes more frustrating than useful and fun.

    Yep! Next on my list.
