So I'm trying to figure out the difference between the two other than the casing (one's metal and one's plastic). The 2140 uses a SATA connector vs a PATA connector. So for $25 extra(lowest config 2140 vs highest config 1000) you get a metal case and SATA connector? Why would anyone buy the 1000? Am I missing something? Oh and the 2140 has a higher volatage adapter for 'fast charging'...what's left for the 1000? Seriously...

I wish the 2140 had come with a 16:10 screen. 576 vertical pixels is too little, and no, jacking up the resolution to 1366x786 is not the answer.

    16:9 sucks.

Here are the major differences between the 2140 and 1000

    Mini 1000
No VGA Port (requires external adaptor)
    No Expresscard slot
    XP, HP MI
Plastic casing in black or red
    Memory upgradable/replaceable
    2 usb ports, optional DOK
    Intel Atom

(DOK is "disk on key", it is a USB thumbdrive that docks completey inside the Mini. You can use the drive on any other PC, its a great option when transferring files, but it does take up 1 usb port. This option is only available with the solid state hard drive.)

    Mini 2140
    VGA Port
    Expresscard slot
    XP, Vista, SuSe
    Aluminum casing, silver
    Memory not easily accessable
    2 USB ports, no DOK
    Intel Atom

Thanks Voinea - that was my mistake. I am more familiar with the consumer version. I have edited the original post to reflect 2 ports on the 2140.

one major difference is that the camera on 1000 sucks (needs lots of light) while the one on 2140 is reported with excellent quality

I agree. The S10 is bad enough with it's screen but even smaller? A high res version would at least keep you from scrolling like crazy.

Your forgetting the Mini 1000 is smaller thinner and lighter, has working sim card slot and internal HSDPA slot, if you can bypass the BIOS you can fit it with 3G/HSDPA yourself, with the 2140 you have to used an external express card which sticks out the side, making it much more bulkier and bigger than the mini note 1000. Check my Sig if you don't believe me..

High resolution on 10" screen???? LOL

We have a problem Huston .... Didn't any of you notice that cramming so many pixels on such a tiny screen will make the text and the details appear SMALLER. You will need magnifying glass to read ...

I got the wife a 1000. It's nice but the little hard drive is a pain and the battery life is just ok. The lack of a vga port and bluetooth sucks too.

I love HP products (my desktop at home is an HP) but I find the 1000 under powered and the 2140 over priced. I think the best deal right now is the Asus eee pc 1000HE. For the same specs as the 2140, it gets more battery time (9hrs) and is $100+ less. Check it out: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001QTXL82?ie=UTF8&tag=asin-b00bam-20

I received my asus 1000HE. I like the device but the HP's keyboard seems to be a lot better. Other than that, I definitely like it over the wife's mini 1000.

I say either get the 1000HE now or wait for the 2140 comes down in price. I just don't see why it should be more than $100 more than the HE.

The 2140 doesn't have a memory card slot?

Really? I had some concerns about this since it is just a standard VGA camera rather than a 1.3 MP camera like some similar netbooks include (eg, the Asus Eee PC 1000 HE).

Can anyone say more about the 2140's camera?

I'll say that the resolution of the camera isn't quite as important as the quality of the lens/sensor. My lappy has a 2.0mp camera that is totally outclassed by the 1.3mp camera on my cell phone. Besides, doesn't most video chat get stepped back to VGA quality?

Yes, but the resolution on the Mini 1000 is pretty terrible. Also, the ExpressCard slot is a BIG bonus. Where I live, to get truly unlimited wireless internet, you have to use either a usb modem or expresscard modem. Honestly, I'd rather have an expresscard modem, which doesn't stick out too much. If the traditional cell providers decide to offer reasonable unlimited data plans, then I'd go for the mini 1000 (with a HD screen mod?), but until then I'll take the 2140.
