I purchased a Samsung SE-S084 external DVD writer to use with my HP Mini 2140 (running Windows XP Pro). The computer sometimes recognizes that the drive is attached. It does not respond as a plug and play device; I usually have to reboot to have it show as attached. Even then, in the middle of playing a music CD, it disappeared and media player could no longer find the files (and the drive had disappeared from the drive list). I have tried using a different cable; that didn't help.

I thought it was a drive problem, but then I inserted an SD card, which also wasn't recognized until I rebooted.

I'm using Kaspersky Internet Security; I don't know if that could be blocking something. Has anyone else seen problems with external drives?

When the drive is going to work I get a single "bong" sound when I plug it in. If I get a triple bong I know it's probably not recognized.

    Ideas?
