I am in the process of customizing an HP 5000. I added the HP Mobile Remote Control as an accessory. Does this mean I need to add the HP Mobile Remote Control Express Card as well?

the 2 remotes fit inside(for storage) 2 different ports. The 'HP Mobile Remote Control Express Card' fits inside an express card slot and the other fits inside a normal Type I/II PC Card slot. According to the spec page, the dv5000t has both slots, but from the links provided by fdlazarte it seems that only the Expresscard version is compatible with the dv5000t, so I swould suggest getting that over the PC Card version.

The PC Card version is a nice option with the TV tuner. Recommended to get if you dont have any TVs.

Can anyone tell me the range on the ExpressCard remote? I just bought a wireless presenter, then realized I might be able to use the remote to control PowerPoint.

    Anyone?

i've used the expresscard remote a good 15 or 20 feet away and it works just fine, it doesn't even have to be pointing exactly at the laptop, although the further away you go the more accurate you have to be. I actually did use this for a powerpoint presentation, and my only word of advice is this--all it does is in essence "click" and "go back a slide". You can't, for instance, specify what you want powerpoint to 'click' on--whether it be a picture or a sound or whatever. you just have to set up your show so the next action is "play movie" or "play sound..." hope this helps!

Thanks, TMWTBS. My presenter doesn't have a mouse either, but all my PowerPoints are automated, stepwise. Mine does have a laser pointer, though, so I can blind ornery students. ;)

Still, now I'm wondering if I should have tried the HP one before paying $50 for the other. Oh well...

so this remote is a useful thing even if one doesn't have a tv tuner or XP MCE? i'm wondering whether it's really useful or not for me or not.

yeah... it can control windows media player or winamp or whatever you use, so it's not exclusive to mce or with a tv tuner. in fact this little mouse can't change the channel in mce, you need the huge remote to do that, but if you can spare the extra 15 bucks you'll most likely end up using it, even if its just so you can walk around your room and skip to the next song when you get bored... and as stated it works fine for powerpoint.

Basically it has the media buttons, arrows, and enter. If anything that can be controlled by the arrows and enter, it would work just like pressing the key on keyboard.
