    Hi.
I am wondering if anyone knows the sequence/model code numbering to the older DV5000 and DV8000 series laptops? I’ve been fixing and repairing a few and needing to find alternate parts that fit but might not be on the parts list. Right now it takes hours to track down by comparing on many different sites with a ton of tabs open. HP does not seem to have any information available to the general public on the reason they named something, say a “dv5140us” vs a dv5237cl”. Often there is no discernable difference, and upon opening up the systems they are identical in every way except maybe one has a bit more ram or something (or a user added or changed it since factory shipment), or one has a Bluetooth module or something irrelevant like that; 5120/5130/5140 differences seem to be unrelated to any numbering code I can logically find (meaning it’s not a CPU or GPU or RAM indication to from my understanding)..

Also, I beefed up one of my dv5000’s with a dv8000 motherboard (Geforce 7600 256mb is a LOT faster on a 1280x800 LCD than it is on a 1680x1050 LCD –can even play almost all the new games and do 3D work on it like that!!!)… but the dv8000 motherboard I used has the express media slot, which I had to remove to get the motherboard to fit into the 15” notebook (I rarely use it and HP makes a PCMCIA remote for the other bay anyway so no loss there). I’ll make a “how-to” at some point soon (putting a 15.4” keyboard in where a full keyboard goes was really tricky- needed to “customize” a dv800 keyboard by removing the numpad), but it would be nice to find a dv8000 motherboard model that might NOT have the express card slot…Anyway. I get a lot more battery life on the 12-cell now with the 1280x800 LCD and the GF 7600 is a lot faster even than the 7400. It would be really nice to have access to the model codes for both series of laptops.

    Thanks!
