    Folks,

I know that this has been discussed before but I couldn't find a post that confirms whether the NEC ND6550A slim DVD-RW drive would work with the HP business notebooks line, including the NC8230 I'm interested in.

If not, what DVD-RW drives would you recommend using with the NC8230? The original HP Multibay II DVD burner is just way too expensive.

    Many thanks in advance!

From a visual, it looks like it would almost work. 2 things would have to be added/changed though. A: the Multibay II bracket would have to be added to the back, along with the side bracket. B: faceplate may have to be changed.

What drive is in there now? You might want to contact UltraDrives.com. They specialize in notebook drives and may know what will fit.

    Thanks guys for prompt response.

Szadek, from what you're saying it seems that HP Multibay II is not an industry standard "slim" type drive bay (ie. it's HP propriatery) and if I wanted to use the NEC drive I would need to add brackets and change faceplates?

zazonz, I currently have the HP DVD-CDRW combo drive but I'm unsure about it's manufacture make/model. I have contacted ultradrives.com and awaiting an answer.

    Again, thanks

From my experience, there are several manufactures of the drives, and the drive you are looking at looks to be the same type. Multibay II has a bracket/connector on the back in and a rail on the right side. The connector on the back changes the point where the drive fits into the system board. From the connector on the rear left lower corner of the drive, to the system board connector in the middle center of the drive.

The rail on the side interacts with a spring mechanism inside the bay that allows it to be pushed in and ejected.

BTW: These rails/brackets are screwed in, and can be removed to use the drive in another drive bay. From my experience with the 61xx series, and the 62xx/68xx series. edit: noticed my error 68xx would be 82xx

You can find out what drive it is by looking in device manager. Sometime swapping the bezels can tricky as the connectors do not line up.

I currently have the NEC ND6500A in my HP nx6125. It is held by 1 screw located inside the RAM bay. I don't have Multbay II.

Windows XPP recognized it and it works absolutely fine except the outer black tray bezel sometimes sticks against the NB body requiring me to gently pry it out with a fingernail, for what little I have used it.

I hope this helps a little.
