I made the restore DVDs and backed up the swsetup folder to DVD before I proceeded with using my retail XP Pro disc to do a clean install

It's sata driver woe! I've gone over and over the search results in this HP section....the files are there in swsetup/hdd ?!!! But the things still refuses to let me switch sata on in the bios (I have to turn it back off after it refuses to boot). What am I doing wrong?

I did follow the procedure of switching off sata in bios prior to reinstalling. But what's up with it?

Plus the 3xusb slots don't work (I experiemented and every other driver works). So just sata and the usb's

So while I put it back to factory state and start over again, any thoughts?

    Thanks :(

OK, I was a bit bleary eyed after it took nearly 3 hours to create the restore discs and then putting in my XP Pro disc for a reinstall

Does this folder even have the sata drivers?! I just saw 'iaahci' and thought nothing of it

Next best thing since I don't have a external floppy is, I've resorted to using a DVD-RW and using winimage to run the intel driver exe I've downloaded (XP Pro installing as I type)

P.S. For any NC8430 owners interested, it takes 2 hours to go back to factory with recovery discs you should make

Check it here. There's the SATA driver: Intel SATA AHCI Controller Driver

    Thank you! +rep ;) :)

To HP: Hell hath no fury like a customer scorn! They put the sata driver(s) in their own recovery partition but it isn't in the swsetup folder to begin with?! What's the point of that?!

OK, miffed now :p Of course it wouldn't install through device manager.

I went back to disabling sata through the bios then installing it after XP - no joy
I went to create a slipstreamed disc with nlite - no joy (said it couldn't detect HD)
I used the maximum PC guide for a d.i.y. approach to slipstreaming - no joy (wouldn't boot)

    *Sigh*

I'll just install regscrub, etc and get rid of norton + other bloat and use the factory install for now. I'm moving to uni on Saturday and can't be bothered anymore. That's what 2 days of looking at the HP recovery installer does to you :p

I'll buy a external floppy round xmas

Out of curiosity but why did you even do this?

It came with Home, and I've got a retail XP Pro disc that has been lying around since the desktop got sold, so why not? :p I just like a lean machine. It's not a deal breaker, I mean the laptop still works heh heh

Outta curiosity what would happen if I installed Pro but Sata stayed turned off? Would that affect stability? Would I run the risk of losing data at any moment? Other dangers?
