    Hi There,

    HP NW8240
    XP Pro SP3

While using the laptop, the screen suddenly went black. I tried to power off which i have set to autoend tasks, so should switch off without any prompts. However this failed. In the end i have unplugged it and tried to reboot.

The laptop comes on and shows the hard disc light flashing briefly. I get no bios or HP screen showing and have tried removing the hard disc but still a black monitor. The laptop definitely not loading into XP as my wifi and volume lights arent lighting up at all.

There is no lights showing on the monitor, and from posts ive read there is no faint sign of anything on the screen ( backlight issues).

HELP!!! This is going to be a nightmare as i go away travelling in 3 weeks!!

from you discription it sounds like your mainboard has given up.

try removing the static from the mainboard (this rarely works but it worked once for me.

unplug the computer and remove the battery, then hold down the power button for about 8seconds. plug it in and try powering on.

I've seen it work before, there is no risk of damage so you have nothing to lose.

    No Joy.

Powers on, hard disc lights for 10 seconds, and the DVD drive sounds active and then nothing. The only light is the power light. And also wont switch off. And fan runs, which was normal.

    ... Not looking good.

Cant get it onto an external monitor, cannot see anything.. :(

I'm 99% sure you won't see anything on a external display. if it lights up, with no post, no HD activity no Backlight activity its an issue with the main board. I'd be willing to bet it's finished, is there any warrenty left by chance?
